Hi Chaps
Some advice please. I plucked up the courage to see my GP about ED and my on going inabilities!! She counselled me and looked at my weight/BP and was happy to prescribe viagra. It did take some courage to visit her and after 6 weeks i find myself getting an erection but generally being unable to maintain it. any thoughts on alternatives or advice. I will revisit her but if i go armed with alternatives she could prescribe Id be happier. Thank you in advance.
It took a lot of courage to see your GP – well done for taking that step. That alone shows you're proactive and want to feel better, and that’s half the battle.
Viagra works for many, but sometimes the issue is more complex than just blood flow. What you’re describing could definitely have a psychological element – performance anxiety, stress, or overthinking can all play a part in maintaining an erection. The more pressure you put on yourself, the harder (no pun intended) it becomes.
Here are some general suggestions that have worked for me and others:
Exercise regularly – Lifting weights 3–4 times a week can work wonders. It helps boost natural testosterone, improves circulation, and does a lot for your confidence.
Lose excess weight (if needed) – Particularly around the middle, as abdominal fat can negatively affect hormone levels and blood flow.
Eat whole foods – A diet rich in lean protein, vegetables, and healthy fats – and low in ultra-processed foods – can support both mood and hormone balance.
Prioritise sleep – Aim for 7–9 hours of good quality rest. Poor sleep can reduce testosterone and raise cortisol levels, which won’t help things.
Cut back on alcohol and stop smoking (if relevant) – Both can contribute to ED, sometimes even in small amounts.
Consider mindfulness or CBT – Talking therapies aimed at anxiety, especially performance anxiety, can make a huge difference.
You could also chat to your GP about alternatives like:
Tadalafil (Cialis) – Works similarly to Viagra but lasts longer, and there’s a low-dose daily version that some find more effective.
Vardenafil (Levitra) – Another option that some respond to better.
Testosterone checks – Worth asking if a blood test is appropriate, especially if you’ve noticed other symptoms like fatigue, low mood, or muscle loss.
You're absolutely doing the right thing by seeking help and wanting to understand all the options. Keep going – there are answers, and things can get better.
Let me know if you’d like a shorter version, or if you're posting this in a particular forum where tone matters (friendly, medical, etc).
