About time this competition was given the axe.
It's the same old shit every year with freak acts now the norm. It has very little to do with music nowadays. Even if he had a half decent song we still wouldn't win because we are not liked by most of Europe and the way other countries vote for their neighbours. It's only because we put so much money into it that we are always seeded through to the final. I for one will not be tuning in to watch it.

it used to be a good show. the best years is sadly behind them. Now, it is much about how awful the songs rather than how good are the songs.  :dash:

They should have invited the US to participate and then the whole of Europe could have booed them in front of the US population.

I would be chearing for the US, not booed. But thats just me  :)

We only get to the Final because we (along with France and Germany) pay the lions share of the costs of staging the thing. Everybody else has to go through a preliminary knockout round.

Started off not too badly but went downhill fast. Couldn't watch to the end.

P.S. Theyr'e a trio not a duo.

Ukraine is bound to win anyway.

I wouldn't mind punting a couple of the group the songs just weird though

It’s just a spectacle now. Just another so called reality tv show and has fuck all to do with music or songs or singers in fact.

It’s not for me and never has been, but as I say. If you like the spectacle of it all and have a sense of humour. You might manage to sit through it.

rather than Graham Norton doing the commentary of the event. They should go with a comedian like Jimmy Carr or Peter Kay. It is more appropriate  :D

Disagree, the last time we had a halfway decent song - Sam Ryder in 2022 - we won the judges vote but lost the public (sympathy) vote to the Ukrainian entry for obvious reasons.  The UK’s main issue is that for last couple of decades our entrants have largely been utter crap.

I actually like the song, but not the best song from the UK, as for how they do, could see a top 5 finish

I think we enter rubbish songs because we (a) know we're getting to the final, regardless and (b) we're not going to win anyway as various Nations will vote in 'blocs' - "if you give ours 10 points, we'll return the favour". That's one reason for having the public vote. The luvvies at the Beeb just look on it as a chance for a nice little junket to a foreign country at little cost to them.

And I counter point b with Sam Ryder.  A decent song and good performance, as far as these things go, and he won the judges vote.

 Had a quick listen.

This song may just be bad enough to win  :)

You can tell if a eurovision song is a good one if it actually gets played on the radio acouple of years later.

Only a few songs I can recall that lived on pass their eurovision performace.

Here are a few that lived on-
waterloo, abba
Brotherhood of Man - Save Your Kisses for Me
Cliff Richard - 'Congratulations'
Sam Ryder - 'Space Man'
Katrina and the Waves - 'Love Shine a Light'
Gina G - 'Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit'
Mans Zelmerlow - 'Heroes'
Rosa Linn - Snap (the song even was big in the usa charts)

My favourite is Barei with the song called "say yah".

Might be funnier to have Kris Tait (Dave's wife) on stage chasing the judges around while doing her fire breathing act............vote for us or get singed   :D :D :D

Sounds OK to me. Certainly better than the cringeworthy effort we entered last year.

Is there a reason you haven’t contributed a review in over 5 years please matey?

Offline MLawro93

With all the musical talent we have in the UK, we never seem to get it together and actually send something decent

Because I haven't been punting for medical reasons. Still plan to return to it (hopefully sooner rather than later) which is why I'm still here.

Eurovision semi finals start tomorrow night then on Thursday night with the final being on Saturday.

I will be watching. Not because it would be any good mind you, it is more to do with just listening to the songs cause every now and then you hear a song that turns big and is good.

Ill turn it off when all the songs have been shown, not interested in the political voting that goes on.  :)

Anyone else will be watching?

I'd rather watch paint dry. The competition has turned into a freak show now and has nothing to do with decent songs.

It's always been shite ! The exception being when ABBA won, but every 'band' that they beat that year were shite too

nah , Disagree.

It used to be good, best years was 2010-2019   :)

But now it is so rubbish.

The one thing's for certain is that the UK entry will finish last or nearly last. Our usual position in this farce especially with all the political voting that goes on.

Offline JontyR

We have this thread every year.

And we have the same tired old views.

I tend to watch and I generally have a bet and I've been pretty successful. For all the talk of political voting its pretty obvious which songs are better and which will do well. Generally I can pick the top 10 from 12 guesses. And if you look at the odds markets you can often find a song with a great chance of making the top five with odds of 25 or 33-1 in the midst of all the short priced favourites.

For all the talk of political voting it generally comes down to a few countries with significant minorities sharing a few points about. The real exception is when the Ukrainians completely swung the public vote in the immediate aftermath of the russian invasion.

The reason why we don't do well is that we normally pick a shit song. And we confuse home grown "fame" with international brand awareness. No one in Moldova gives a toss about if someone was on love island here 5 years ago etc.

thank fuck I don't have a TV licence

Was on the radio last night, I caught some of it whilst driving a shortish distance. The few songs I heard I quite enjoyed, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Then again  I don't go out of my way for most popular television based shows, competitions etc.

General Franco rigged the Voting

Offline C-R-Tees

The voting has always been fairly political, neighbours will generally give each other good scores (unless a song is truly terrible). I don't think it's so bad that we could never win if we had the right song though. We would have won in 2022 if not for the understandable sympathy and support for Ukraine. Our entry is generally one of the worst songs/performances and where we place reflects that.

Really don't like our entry this year and I expect it to be quite low in the scoring. Out of all of this year's songs I've heard so far, my favourite is probably Ireland's.

Offline DastardlyDick

Like most things now, Eurovision is all about money. It now costs so much to put on that smaller Countries can't afford it. Most of the funding is provided by Germany, France and the UK, in return for which our entry automatically goes into the Final. The luvvies at the Beeb like this arrangement as it gives them a free foreign junket every year.
