My trusty old Dell laptop finally gave up the ghost this week so I treated myself to a new one. Slim, elegant fast- ticked plenty of boxes. It runs on Windows 11.

Then I tried adding my relatively old but 100% functional, HP Laserjet printer.

Downloaded the relevant driver, from the HP website, then tried to install said driver.

Pop up message saying it wasn't a "Microsoft verified" app and thus wouldn't be installed. Said I had to go to the Microsoft store and download it from there.

Did that, and tried to install again. Same problem.

Turns out that Windows 11 has a so-called "security" feature built in, which only allows Microsoft products to be installed.  After a bit of faffing about I found out how to remove what they term the "S menu".

Removed it ( after lots of dire warnings ("are you really sure?")) and it let me install the printer driver.

Really really frustrating to have this "feature" (disguised as "security") trying to force me to only use MS products.

I've been running Win11 for ages and never had any issues with installing drivers, two different Epson printers and an old Epson scanner installed without any issues.  :unknown:

Yes, that's what I discovered. You can kick it out of S mode (accompanied by dire warnings about how doing so is irreversible), which is what I did and was able to get the printer running again.

Watch out for Windows Updates.  You may find you'll have to repeat what you have done to get the printer running again.
