All over the news today about the Competition and Markets Authority  investigating  charges and fees at the vets.

My own experience  ( admittedly limited  as I've only had the dog three months):

He had a sore patch on his back.  The vet prescribed some medicated shampoo, and charged me £23.

He was a bit overweight. Vet recommended a macrobiotic feed. Their bags of this were £47.

I can buy the shampoo from Amazon for £15.  The local pet store has the same dog food for £35.

Be interesting to see how this develops!

Overweight dog, provide a good quality food in the correct proportions. Reasonable exercise should do it.....
Regards skin conditions, yes takes vets advice, then shop around for any medicine required.
Worth considering that a dog's diet, could well cause skin conditions.
Lots of folks advocate raw food nowadays, if I was getting another pooch, I think I'd go down that route also :hi:

It's private health care at the end of the day.

I can’t criticise my local vets who are part of a corporate organisation for the care that they gave my old dogs in their later years and the care that they give to my new 1 year old dog.

What surprised me in that BBC article was the number of vets that are now owned by one of six corporate practices. That’s akin to a cartel.

I believe there is a CMA investigation into the lack of competition in the sector due to large groups buying up vets practices. Many of them are now run by US owned private equity companies and they are the ones charging inflated prices.

It's astoundingly expensive, too. I wasted an embarassingly large sum keeping a dog alive a few months longer for an escort I know.

The skin issue was down to being overweight - a too-small harness ,( before my time) had rubbed.

Vet said to feed him as if he was the weight he should be (20kg) and not the weight he is (27.5kg).

Adjusted the amount of food accordingly,  and no snacks or tidbits from the table. More exercise ( good for me, too) Lost 1.4kg  in two weeks  vet quite happy with how its going.

I saw the CEO of the CMA on BBC Breakfast this morning, I can't remember her name but I think she should be in the WWWWWE thread.

Sarah Cardell.  Personally, I wouldn't.

Vets can effectively name their price as people treat their pets like family, in some cases even better than family.

I know when my dog got sick, I'd have paid whatever the cost was to sort it out

Standard vet practice these days they have no shame for what should be a vocation not just a job.
My dog needed a cruciate op last year for which my vet quoted 5k with aftercare,I made some localish enquiries and for a couple of hour drives to a different vet I got the op for £2500 and the care was far better than my vet would have given.
They basically whacked 2.5k on for nothing.

On the radio the vets were moaning at the cost of scanners. Thousands they said.
As do range rovers, jags, BMWs.

No sympathy for them in the slightest  :hi:

I do have sympathy for vets.
During the lockdowns my pooch was quite poorly, and needed numerous vet trips. Alot of assessments were carried out in the carpark. On occasion my fella had to go into the surgery which he did quite happily.
However I never realised how many animals got put down until this time. Some owner's allowed their faithful friends to be PTS in the boot of the car, in the carpark. Not a very nice occasion.
However that is better than the animal being taken into the surgery to PTS without their owners. I could never allow that.

I feed my dog raw food and weigh it to 2 to 3% of her bodyweight. Occasionally mix in a raw egg with shell. Feed her twice a day. Overall walk her about five miles over a day, more in summer months. Don't give her any human food except some vegetables. No dog biscuits and the occasional natural treat. She gets plenty of exercise. Also had her professionally trained as a protection dog. If you have never had a dog then you have never experienced genuine love. Visits to the vet are thankful very few and far between

It goes even further than that. Trying to get some special food for my overweight dog only place I can get a couple of tins for her to try (she's fussy with her food!) Is the vet - Pet's at Home refuse to supply it in anything less than 12  tins, and if she doesn't eat it, there's no return of the unused tins and pro rata refund! They say I have to go to the Vets, a round trip of 18 miles!
I hope the CMA hang the bastards out to dry.

DD they will get them. Can’t see the brethren of the groups holding 60% of the practices in the UK

Can you imagine Vets going on strike?
The doctors have a case, but they don’t write their own paycheques.

If you have never had a dog then you have never experienced genuine love.

I had two boxers, daft as anything. Both Kennel club gold.
I have never wept as much as when I have had to have them PTS, more than when my father died.
The reason I haven't a current pooch, I honestly don't think I could do the last day again.

spending hard earned money on a sick dog?
Just put it down and pick up another from the dogs home
I remember 25 years ago there was a conversation at work about how much someone was spending on vets bills for their sick dog.
Another bloke said they used to have dogs on a smallholding so they were effectively farm / yard dogs and not allowed in the house etc, he said if they got sick they were given 5 days to get better and if they didn't they were taken round the back and got a shotgun cartridge in the head, job done, move on

Problem is that so many wankers have so many of these things now and most of them aren't even what i'd call real dogs anyway, I remember as a kid watching All creatures Great & Small with that batty old woman and her joke of a dog Tricky Woo, it was an exception how she treated the little cunt like a child but these days seemingly Millions of others do too  :dash:

Part of the family. OK I can get why people are drawn to pets and love them as they give unconditional love but at the end of the day it's still just a dog / cat / whatever not a person and you know they only live about 10 years when you sign up.

My mates wife always pesters for a dog and in fairness they do go out and get rescue dogs but once they are accepted they always get palmed off with 2 at a time due to "These 2 have been in the same kennel and appear to have "Bonded", we don't want to split them up now"
Once they both croak it my mate says "No more dogs, never again" and then 6 months later.................. His parents were the same and I always remember as a kid thinking his Mum treated the dogs far better than they treated him

Firstly 3 dogs all over 16 when they finally died. All of them multiple long haul flights and lived with me in 6 different countries. Last died 2 years ago. Aside from compulsory vaccinations etc needed for inter-country trips, or physical injuries which were 1 - tooth extraction after a break; 2 - deep cut needing stitches from running onto a pointed stick; 3 - UTI infection presented by blood in urine, I never took them to the vets. When the last one was put to sleep the vets here, who I had them registered with, "what's the secret then for them to live to well and long" and my response was "I kept them away from the vets". So my advice to avoid vet bills is not to take them to the sodding vets unless 100% necessary.

1 - Food. there is no such thing as human v dog food. There is food and there is shite. Marketing companies came up with the idea that "Only one type of food..." to keep you as a buyer. It's all shit. My dogs typically ate what I ate except not junk food. By cooking or dishing them out extra it also keeps you honest as well not eating complete shit. I did use to keep some pouches from Butternut in the freezer as a back up which is basically real food. Less carbs then they tend to want to eat less as well. Funny heh?
2 - Most things can be cured with activated charcoal as the first line of defense. Tom Titts? Charcoal. Not seeming settled? Charcoal. Puking? Charcoal.
3 - They don't need front line and all that shit. Its literally poison. Find a tick and pluck it off. Power flea killer on and off it you need it.
4 - Stop washing their sodding hair all the time and keep them the hell away from groomers with all their toxic chemicals. Water wash is all they need. The more you wash the more they smell.
5 - when they get older and start to pee a lot, External Link/Members Only is a great natural solution. DRY - External Link/Members Only drops into their food and it gives them back their bladder control. Their EASE product if good for creaking joints as well.
6 - Smelly ears / ears cleaning - 50:50 solution of organic cider vinegar and tepid preboiled water. Put it in, massage it around, get it out and its problem solved.
7- Harness and never a collar. Laryngeal paralysis is not a good way to see your dog die in your arms. Believe me.

Most importantly - ADOPT DON'T SHOP. Never buy a dog and always adopt. You can not call yourself a true dog lover if you give money to an industry which is creating weak dog breeds whilst all the shelters are stuffed full of lock down dogs who have been turfed out.

Harness, not lead - quite agree, I use a Julius K9 harness which works just fine.

Adopt, not purchase- again agree. My dog was a former prison service sniffer dog.  A relative  was his handler in prisons.  She left the service, and they said the dog wouldn't  work with another handler, so she could keep him.

Changed jobs again, and split up with her partner ( who had a second partner, kids and home unknown to her). New job in a different part of the country, and rented house doesn't allow pets.  Was going to give dog to scumbag ex, I could see it was upsetting her to even think of that, so I took him on.

Good article, basically as previously described on this thread, the corporates are getting in on the act of owning chains of vets. They know owner's will pay for the care of their pets and are exploiting this for profit.
Who would possibly ever think that pharmaceutical companies wanted pets (people?) to stay sick to increase their profits....... W⚓.
