And a new verse of that Hymm Eternal father strong to save..

O Lord, entrust their souls safekeep,
as lifeboats plough o’er oceans deep;
lend them your courage, strength and grace,
to those in peril, they must race:
Oh, hear us Lord, a sailor’s plea,
guide all who save lives out at sea!

O Lord, entrust their souls safekeep,

guide all who save lives out at sea!

Hats off to the brave crew members of the RNLI lifeboats :hi:
Living in the Midlands I couldn't be much further from the sea but when visiting  the seaside I always make an effort to visit the lifeboat station and buy something from their giftshop if they have one.

Was just thinking to myself, why isn't it paid for by the government... It costs 188m a year. But then I was thinking of it was paid for by government they'd lose volunteers and would have to move to paid staff, pushing the cost up considerably

Yeah, if it was paid for by the government they'd find a way to fuck it up  :dash:
Probably why it is run so well because it's ran by volunteers.

Yes, agree and to get someone that well trained would cost a fortune

Because they don't want government or political interference.
For example remember they work in both the UK and the whole of Ireland. But more importantly they want control over what they build and use, not what a quango tells them to use - or who to save.
If they received government funding, would they be ordered to stop rescuing channel migrants? Possibly not, but the risk is there

The crews are often made up from people who work or make a living somehow from the sea like trawlermen etc and these things often run in families.

The Southport & St Annes lifeboat disaster still remains the worst ever loss of life with 27 of the 29 crew members being killed on the same rescue mission, I go cycling along the Prom and down to St Annes and there is a memorial which is how I knew the magnitude of the tragedy

My father had an unusual middle name, and none of his siblings had a middle name at all.

The family story  which I have been unable to verify, is that the unusual name is my Father's  grandmother's maiden name.

Four male members of that family  with the unusual surname, were part of the local lifeboat crew, and were  all lost at sea during a rescue attempt in atrocious weather.  As a result of this disaster,  RNLI have rules about how many members of the same family can serve together in a lifeboat.

As I say  I cannot verify this, so it may just be family folklore that has grown legs over the years.

A moving and inspiring thread. The number of Davies men struck me too, as that is generally a Welsh name is it not?

Generally but not always: it's also something like eighth commonest surname in England
