Terrible news let's hope they can sort it out very quickly

He's waited an awful long time to get on the throne and then gets a cancer diagnosis

They have said it's not prostate cancer but haven't actually elaborated on what it actually is, I know they are saying he is positive about the outcome but who knows how this will end  :unknown:

Most of us will know people who have lost their lives to cancer and would agree it's a terrible way to die, 1 in 2 people currently expected to get cancer in their lifetime in the UK

Many cancers are introduced as a result of the natural cell reproduction processes of the human body. Over time the processes introduce errors/mutations to the new cells.  If you live long enough you're likely to get some sort of cancer.

There's many different types of cancer and by the sounds of they caught it early and he's started treatment.  Time will tell how it goes. Many cancers aren't fatal.

Many or all, I was under the impression that it was basically due to cell mutations / errors  :unknown:

The BBC Royal correspondent just said they will be looking to share out various duties however it just shows that there aren't enough of them with Kate side lined for a few months after her operation and No.2 son out of the picture in the US

What about bringing No.2 brother back into the fold then eh  ;)   :scare:

Sad news. But everytime there is major royal news i start moaning about the endless news coverage.

Gb news at 6pm : king got cancer.
6,02pm: as you just been told king has been diagnosed with cancer.
6,12pm : king has got cancer.

All the rest of tv news media - king has cancer

Right now on all british news networks : king has cancer.

They completly ignore other news stories.

Also why are there reporters at buckingham palace when nothing is happening there.
The news was released in a statement online.   :unknown:

I assume he's not one of the 21,000 who are currently on a cancer waiting list for more than 62 days ?

I guess it's in the area of his prostate so could be testicular, bowl, bladder or other nearby organs. Definitely not fun and he must be having chemo treatment. Presumably it's not one of the aggressive cancers such as pancreatic.

Could be just about anywhere, may have been revealed by standard pre-op blood tests

maybe it is a blood cancer like a lymphoma which is slow growing?

Or i am informing a mate that i am out but tell him that I am not at the supermarket but some place else.  :unknown:

Or in punting terms me typing a review but say i went for  one service only. All i will say it was not owo.

If you inform someone about info of what ypu doing or going through then its only right to say the whole story and not half of the story.

Its a bit strange that days after being very open about his prostate problems and saying how he wanted to encourage dialogue but now the palace is now being very coy about what type of cancer.

which of course will encourage speculation !

the Times has already speculated that the fact he is starting a course of treatments suggest chemo or radiotherapy and that surgery has been ruled out - like Leukaemia.

Years ago it used to be quoted as 1 in 3 but not they quote 1 in 2 (it's actually slightly under), basically the cancer risk has increased as the average age of the population has gone up.
As previously posted cancer starts when there are mutations or errors in new cells that are produced and as you get older there is more chance of producing the mutated cells
People used to die younger from all manner of other things that are now treatable and never got to an age where their cancer developed but now they are living longer it does

you have every right to disagree but for me the man has told us he has cancer and perhaps, just perhaps no more information is being given to us until full results have been produced and his doctors know themselves the full extent of the cancer.

maybe give the guy some respect and let him have some privacy.

this notion of full information doesn't stack up - if you are in a pub and excuse yourself to go the bathroom do you give full info and say if its is for a piss or a crap?

your latest review tells us the SP was English and tall but doesn't tell us if she had niceties or long legs and what size her arse was - using your analogies why not?

give the King a break perhaps in the days to come more info will be given as everything is confirmed

Yeah i'm thinking that we will know eventually but it will be either when treatment is finished and he has a clean bill of health or when things look like they are going downhill and he needs to stop working for 6 months etc
Even then it may be a couple of years until we know the full picture and as said he like everyone else does have a right to personal privacy regarding their medical situation.
I've worked with people who had cancer, some have been fully open about it and others won't talk about it at all, some simply say they are having cancer treatment but won't elaborate any further due to the type of cancer such as prostate / bowel etc which involves procedures which aren't nice and still a bit taboo especially for the older generation

Initially when I saw the thread last night I thought 'King' in the title referred to some sort of rap star or boxer, then I noticed the article on the BBC website and realised the thread was likely about the actual King.

It's for him to know and digest, not anyone else just my opinion. At this time let's hope the treatment works for his sake, as I understand it cancer treatment is far from an easy ride.

I know the Republic-wishers are full of 'so what-ery' but as a true Brit I'm dismayed  by this news.  I'm concerned that ( as was suggested above) it may be really serious, and potentially the throne changes hands again so soon after the late Queen's passing.

The fact that whinge-bag Harry is flying back today gives me pause  to wonder - he was too late arriving at Balmoral.

can't buy that Buckingham Palace has announced the cancer was found during the King's recent treatment for a benign enlarged prostate. How are they going to detect a brain tumour probing around near his prostrate?

as others say the man should be given the respect for privacy.

I'm guessing through blood tests.

Offline NelsonH

When you get a cancer diagnosis they go looking for other sites.

Apart from obvious inspections with "scopes" of different kinds there is MRI and most sensitive of all is PET.
For this you take a radioactive injection and the radioactivity gets taken up preferentially by quickly growing cells.

Depending on the amount of any spread you may get surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy or all of them.

Every stage carries an anxious waiting period for the result and relief or not, as the case maybe.

When I heard Harry was on his way over my initial thought was that this is perhaps quite serious, not that cancer is ever not serious but I mean you need to come now as he will decline fairly quickly and if you want some quality time etc

However i'm now thinking part of this will also be a PR issue for both sides  :unknown:
If Harry doesn't jump on a plane quickly then he gets slated for not even returning to see his sick Dad (maybe ) with cancer
On the flip side if the Royals put any sort of barrier to him coming over then no doubt it would be all over the glossy mags in no time at all and we know how much the publicity shy H&M love publicity  :drinks:

I'm not an avid Royal watcher so i'm not sure who in the household Harry has an issue with and whether his relationship with Charles is good; bad or indifferent, it may be out there but i've not picked it up  :unknown:

As I understand it Megan has more of an issue so as her hubby he has to either stand by her or ditch her, i'm guessing Megan and Kate is the problem as i've heard they don't see eye to eye in which case it unfortunately splits the 2 brothers, i've posted before that Diana would be horrified about that and i'm sure if she was still around then a peaceful settlement would have been found

the Galleri test purely indicates that you 'might' have cancer  it doesn't confirm it beyond doubt. The article you quote is clear in stating that further testing would be required to identify the exact type of cancer and a blood does not identify brain cancer as far as I know, a scan is needed

So what you are saying is a blood test can't give an indication that cancer might be present so further tests can be carried out?

BTW I know about the Galleri, I'm part of it. Though it would seem I've been wasting my time, though having said that I think I'll stick with the opinions of those I know to be qualified in medicine.

Funny things blood tests, they use them as a first port of call in lot of medical conditions, including a heart attack.

nope I'm saying that it CAN give an indication that cancer may be present but from what I understand it doesn't categorically pin down the exact type of cancer and more tests are needed

I didn't say that I specifically said that a brain tumour was not detectable purely from a blood test

as your article says about the galleri trials it can detect in a blood test the possibility of cancer. It goes on to say that if the test indicates the possibility of cancer an individual would have to be checked in to do further checks to confirm if there was cancer, and what type

the detection of of a cancer signal from the Galleri test does not in itself confirm cancer

The information we have is that surgery is not an option but other regular treatments are being given
So it may be a blood cancer (Leukaemia, multiple Myeloma etc) which are often picked up from pre-op blood tests or a brain tumour which could have been picked up by an alert physician.
If Charles asked for an aspirin, tripped slightly or dropped a book then you can be sure that a full battery of tests (inc MRI etc)  would be run. You wouldn't want to be doctor or nurse that missed the smallest indication that the King had a problem.
So it wouldn't necessarily need a specific cancer test to have picked something up
