Author Topic: 2nd hand petrol hybrid car  (Read 1673 times)

I'm in the market for a new car.
The garage who service my current car have  suggested a petrol hybrid.
The Toyota Prius 1.8 has caught my eye, zero road tax, ulez compliant, 70 + mpg.
BUT, I'm wary I have no idea about petrol hybrids,  also they are automatic,  I've never driven an automatic.
And on a final note there's one that a dealer have imported direct from Japan themselves and they mention by saying the speedo still reads KMs so you can see its genuine.
I know originally all cars are imported  but I've never heard of 2nd hand ones being imported.
Should I be wary ?
I've never spent more than 4k on a car my budget is 8k for this one

In reliability surveys the Prius has been named the UK's most reliable car.

Just had a look on Autotrader and I see there are a few Japan imports for sale on there around your price point.

I have heard of used imports from Japan. Used to be a fair few Mazda MX5 brought in as I recall. You could tell them by the square number plate.

Looking on autotrader will give you an idea of what's out there and what the current prices are in the market.

There's a Chrome addin called AT Price Tracker which will show you any price changes made to each advert - if a car has been at the dealer for a while and they've reduced the price and they can't shift it they might be open to an offer.

£8K ones seem quite old; Fiesta, Aygo, and other small cars might be significantly newer at that price?

The Prius is awful to drive. Around town it decent on fuel no better than a diesel, but on a run the mpg is appalling. The vairomatic gearbox is crap every time you do anything with the gas pedal the engine screams it's head off which is why the mpg is crap. Also when the hybrid fails it'll cost more than the car to replace.

I just got a Suzuki hybrid in December, the MPG is slightly less than my petrol Ford. Its better for my tax, that the reason I got it.

Automatics are easy to drive, I always hire them when abroad.

The Prius is a very good car, and very reliable, if I recall they are the most reliable hybrids out there.  Not all hybrids are automatic, but auto's are very easy to drive, especially around town or in heavy traffic.

Used imports from Japan are very common - the performance Nissan's and Toyota's are popular imports, along with Mazda MX5's (Miata is what they are known as in Japan), but be wary on the insurance costs as it can be higher on an import.

One thing I would check is the mileage (on the UK one), if its very high its probably been used as a taxi so I'd personally steer clear of it.

Take it for a test drive!

I notice every Uber driver seems to drive a Toyota Prius usually silver or white is this compulsory for an Uber driver  :D

Recalling from 20+ years ago but I remember talking to friends and work colleagues about "Grey imports"

As I recall at the time in Japan you couldn't drive a car once it was more than 3 years old so they used to export them to other countries, the UK was a good destination as we also drive on the left
I believe that most of the cars were put in storage in Japan until they were about 8 or 10 years old before being exported and typically had about 35K on the clock (M or KM I can't remember), the delay was to ensure it didn't impact too much on their new car exports as these models would then be slightly out of date however -
The good news is that the Jap specs were normally better than the UK specs to begin with and the Japs tended to go for lots of extras or the cars came with them on as standard, the term "Fully loaded" used to be used for them

I knew a couple of people who had 10 year old Jap imports and never had any issues with them

I have seen it said that ex-cabs can be quite good value, the mileage depresses the value but they can be very well maintained.
Not sure I'm brave enough though, unless its a big firm doing airport runs.

I dont think its a case of you cant drive but they have like a super MOT were it is mandatory to repace a lot of components so at this point a lot get moved on.

Really useful thread. Thanks all.

The guarantee wouldn't count for an import I don't think, but for Toyota hybrids in the UK the batteries are guaranteed for 15 years/ 150k miles providing the car is serviced every year by an official Toyota dealer. Though the batteries aren't the same cost as a fully electric car when they go wrong anyway, maybe 2k, instead of 20k.
As said elsewhere grey imports can be different on insurance so check that.
It depends on your budget range, but worth looking at the other Toyota hybrids available before you go for a Prius, the shape is quite marmite.

No it's because they're the easiest colours to sell on at the end of the lease period so the depreciation is least, also for the same reason the initial cost is often lower

On a Toyota hybrid it is vital to keep the hybrid battery fan filter clear.

There's a Toyota mechanic on Youtube who is a mine of information on Toyota hybrids. Here he talks about that filter on a Prius.

The Toyota hybrids are very good, I had one fairly recently and did a 500 mile round trip that ended up costing less than £30 in fuel

I've had French cars for years without any problems worth mentioning. Good reliable diesel engines from my experience but maybe I'm in the minority

if you are used to a manual then when driving a diffrent side its safer to drive an auto as you might fumble for the gear change automaticly muscle memory wise and find you holding the door handle...

This has happened to me when ive been unable to get an auto box in france or italy .... not a pleasant thing when you need to be quick in traffic  :hi: :hi:

Me too. I ran French cars for about 15 years. Always good runners.

Thank you everyone that has commented.
Yes the shape is Marmite, but I like Marmite and I do like the shape.
I'm only looking for a Prious 2013 or 2014, max 80,000 miles.
I appreciate that they are very popular as taxus.
Two things I really like are the heads up display and the intelligent  parking assist, annoyingly I can't seem to find one that has both, it seems to be one or the other

My latest car has an electronic hand brake which automatically comes on when you stop ,after years of a manual handbrake every time I stopped I still reached down to put the handbrake on  :dash:

. Some ppl find large cars difficult. Some ppl may find manual hard.

Oh BTW, I hear Toyota Prius are prime targets for the Catalytic converters. If you do get one, buy a Cat Shield and have it fitted by a garage.  I almost bought one.  Instead I bought a Honda Insight, a Prius copy cat.  Not as economical but has been fine and cat thieves don't seem to target it.
