Why is men's clothing always on the first floor, rather than the ground floor of shops   

The ground floor always appear to be the women's section !

I know this, a lot more woman’s clothes are sold than men’s, and in clothes retail they always push the best sellers, so they are on the ground floor. 
Also woman tend to browse buyers so buy on impulse, so they will walk through the ground floor where men tend to know what they want. This comes from woman being gathers and men being hunters.
After leaving school and before I joined the Royal Navy I worked in a department store.

Only guessing, but I think that they just like looking, and looking and looking ; and trying on and trying on and trying on 

PS. I've noticed that the sales assistants who achieve most sales are the ones that offer their customers a glass of wine, coffee or tea

Psychologically this makes some sense to me (assuming they only want/can afford one of the items they look at).  Someone looks at the first item because they are for some reason attracted to it.  They want to look round to see if there’s anything they like more, but at the same time, deciding that all those things you saw later are not as good confirms their excellent initial judgement.

Good thinking Mr Bluesky, my ex was always complaining about the house being too cold so luckily I was on hand with some "Outside the box" thinking and suggested that she pushed the hoover round a bit more often.
Multiple benefits as it's a bit like exercise and generates heat plus keeps the house cleaner so should have also helped her stop moaning about it being untidy / dirty all the time, I even went to the trouble of dropping more crumbs than normal to help motivate her and pointed out the exercise would help her lose some fat but did she thank me  Did she fuck, I just got an ear bashing 

Apparently she still wasn't happy so I bought her a new iron and let her know it would not only be practical and make her life easier but was also like standing next to a 2KW heater 

She still wasn't happy, I mean FFS there's no pleasing some people is there 
We split not long after, talk about cutting your nose off but at least I can say I tried as hard as I could

Another of those random things that goes on in my head is this. To what degree are we able to control the course of our lives? I can pinpoint when my life took a certain path when years ago as a young man I was faced with a binary decision to make. Two job offers, both good. The choice to take job A over B was my decision, but pretty much after that a lot of what happened (save a few) was a random series of events that I hadn't planned for. The biggest being meeting the future Mrs A and starting a family with her.

Had I chosen to take the other job, Mrs A would have been a different woman and my children would have been different too. I'm not regretting it at all btw. Just wondering, aside from external factors beyond our control, how much are we in control of our lives?

A staycation voucher for an all gils spa weekend so she can take her best mate away with her for a couple of nights of pampering and sightseeing 

Obviously you will be OK at home on your own

Being in control is different from the “sliding doors” phenomenon.  You made the choice to choose Job A - I daresay that everything after that didn’t just happen but was another series of choices with consequences, big or small.  It’s just a different set of choices from those which would have been available had you chosen Job B.  But you were in control of taking Job A or Job B. 

The biggest choice I can remember was about 15 years ago when I quit a job I hated with no plan for what to do next, no job to go to and I was out of work for over a year. (2008 financial crisis was hitting so few jobs around for a while).  I had control over the choice to quit, and I do sometimes wonder what might have happened had I stayed, but to be honest I can’t really imagine what my life 15 years after making the different choice would have been.  I can maybe imagine what it would have been like for the 3 or 4 months after the point I made that choice.  I feel as though one way or the other, I would have found a way that meant I am happier today than I was then.  Whether I would have been as happy as now, more or less happy, where I would be living etc etc I have no idea, but I would have felt as though I was in control of all the decisions to get me there.  All I can usefully conclude is that I am happy now and have plans for how to maintain that in future.  So I feel as though I have control of my life.

Of course different people have different degrees of control.  Financial resilience/independence gives you huge amounts of control compared with not having that.  If you’re working 2 jobs to make ends meet, having others to support and having no time to think about how to change, you may not have the luxury of being able to make the same range of choices as others.

This is very true and a humbling thought that there are people in a far worse situation that don't have the comfort to make a choice.

I have a very simple view on life outcomes.

I believe that we are essentially the sum of all the decisions we have ever made in life, I accept that and know that I have ended up in any situation, because of my choices. i.e. I don't blame anything on anyone, I take personal responsibility.

If a British born person is in two jobs to make ends meet, there's usually a reason in their past that was in their control. Go back to their childhood, you'll probably find it in the choices they made. Education for the most part is free in this country, so did they actually study when they were given the opportunity, or did they go play with their friends?

And, what financial commitments did they make that means that they have to work two jobs?

I doubt that there was any genuine insurmountable challenge that they faced, that has forced them in to their situation.
