I'd love to put it up the Lionesses!

To digress, just been watching the Australia - France penalty shoot out and it occurred to me that a couple of possible chances may have been missed - is it against the Laws of the Game that if the 'keeper saves but the ball is still in play for the penalty taker to run up and stick it in the back of the net or is that considered unsporting?
On the booking, it's strange how certain nationalities seem to be more prone to exaggerating an "injury" than others - for me the classic example (in the men's game) was a Brazilian player who had the ball kicked at him a bit hard, it hit him in the legs, but his hands shoot up to his head and he went down like he'd been shot! Maybe FIFA need to do video reviews and impose suspensions for feigning injury to gain advantage?

Unlike a normal penalty kick, you can’t score off a save or a rebound on a penalty shootout.

In a penalty shootout the ball isn't 'in play', it's put it on the spot and kick it once and that's it, can't be kicked again.

In penalty shoot outs you only get one chance to score unlike a penalty in regulation time :hi:

Also In regulation time if a player takes a penalty and hits the post or crossbar without the goalkeeper touching it he cannot score from the rebound it must be touched by a second player  :hi:

Yes.... Lionesses v Matildas in the semis.

Just as well it didn't finish 0 - 0, as the Columbians would have won on national anthems.

Have you ever seen a team of women proudly singing their national anthem with such fervour?

C'mon charles!
You've had your go of God Save The King.
You don't need saving chum!
You're doing ok!

Watching the girls in France v Australia again singing with such enthusiasm to an anthem that actually means something to them. :dash:
Rant over!

Up the Lionesses!

Bamford makes missing sitters look effortless
He needs to miss a good few in a match & eventually one somehow goes in

Russo's shot & goal across the keeper was pretty identical to the colombia winner

Good try England Lionesses. Got to the final.
Spain had the better play, possession and energy.
Need to get more grass root investment in UK. Majority of Spain team in the Champion League winning Barcelona side.
Still nice pay day for each player on both sides.

Just an aside  now the dust is settling, having watched quite a few games, I was surprised at how many of the ladies, of all nationalities,  had bad complexions. Lots of spots, acne and other blemishes. I would have thought as healthy fit athletes that they wouldn't.

Online mr.bluesky

So all the media today will be about the Lionesses "heroic" failure. Like the men's team at the Euro's final and World cup semi final they bottled it when it mattered . It was a poor performance and they rarely threatened Spains goal. England were very hit or miss throughout the tournament their only good performance came against China in the group stage and Australia in the Semi final . Perhaps we will now hear the end of the calls for Sarina Weigman to take over as Manager of the men's team .

Whilst the click bait headline is frustrating for everyone I think the point is about access. There is a difference between the make up of sporting teams both in terms of different sports and different genders within the same sport.

Is this, not symptomatic of racist / sexist coaches, but asking the question do girls, particularly from certain sections of society, get enough access to opportunities in sport?

There was one point a few years ago that well over half of England's Cricket XI were public schoolboys. Cricket is meant to be our national summer sport. I'm not saying there should be quotas or anything, just that there needs to be steps taking place to enable those with the most talent to have the opportunity to access it.

it really comes down to family attitudes, any one living in an urban area in britain has access to all manner of sport, but how many parents take their child swimming? The scottish cricket team seems to be mainly asian, those wicked public schools just not doing their duty up here.

I don't think its just family. The influence of parents will reduce over time just as the impact of peer pressure will increase.

There was a big thing about girls participation rates in sport matching those of boys at primary school but drop out rates increase massively when they go to senior school. I don't know if there are differences in relation to the sports or the ethnic backgrounds of the girls concerned.

I've not followed or read this thread as the women's WC didn't interest me but I just thought now it's over and we are again being led to believe that interest in the women's game is almost on a par with the men's game how the interest and number of posts on the women's WC thread compares to the last men's WC thread

Well the women's has a massive 2 pages totalling 85 posts including this one whereas the men's thread had a massive 30 pages totalling 1450 posts

I know this is a blokes site but certainly no comparison regarding the level of interest and that's even with England getting to the final

That has to be one of the most ridiculous uses of statistic ever!

For a start you are knocking down a claim that no serious person is making that interest is "almost on a par".  There remains a massive difference, which the FA for example gives as the rationale for the difference in manager pa - £400k and £4m.

The claim would be that interest has massively increased over the Euros and world cup and there is plenty of proper evidence of that.

Finally a key part of that claim is that interest is massive amongst women, who tend not to be members on here.

I see that he's now claiming that it was "consensual" - I'm no lip reader, especially in Spanish, but I didn't see much conversation take place, and, judging by her body language,  Jenni Hermoso certainly wasn't expecting it!
IMO, he'd have been better to say "heat of the moment, very sorry, won't happen again, etc etc" and make bloody sure it doesn't happen again.
The crotch grabbing is far less easy to explain away and he should be censured for that, it's hardly a "natural" reaction after all.
According to the BBC, the entire squad has now refused to play for Spain until he's gone, and there are Law suits flying in all directions, including one accusing Hermoso of lying about it not being consensual!

Like most on here I have very little interest in women's football. Is Hermoso a lesbian, a lot of female footballers seem to be, if she is a dyke then I can well imagine her reaction when the fellow kissed her. As for the crotch grabbing, that's totally unacceptable, it seems our Spanish friend has wandering hands. He's probably better off just vacating his position for the greater good of the women's game in Spain.

I think the entire Spanish language should be scrapped due to its outdated genders.  How offensive must it be having everything as male or female.

Whilst maybe it was too much (although she didn't seem to protest, be put out, or anything negative at the time, though that doesn't justify anything), you could argue that "he touched my hair in an inappropriate manner whilst putting a medal over my head".  "I was hugged by another player, who is a lesbian, on the pitch and I felt violated being a heterosexual woman" etc.  Things are getting to the stage where anything could be deemed inappropriate.

Not sure if the French (plus other Europeans) with their kissing as greetings, those from the Middle East, Eskimo / Inuit nose rubbing etc. could be now be deemed inappropriate, sexist, as assault or whatever.
