I think you'll find asking for prepayment is very much standard everywhere in places where you're not known. No reason for a "red flag"

No it's not, I agree with OP, in my experience the WG asking for the money for extras upfront in a parlour is usually a sign of a bad punt incoming.

I agree - never been asked for extra payment upfront anywhere although I usually offer it before getting started (kissing will never be an extra in my book and no french kissing is a deal breaker)
