I'm not sure if it's apocryphal, but I've heard more than one report that he's sacked more than one of his pub landlords on the spot, who then had to immediately vacate the pub premises, losing not only the pub they managed, but also their accommodation.
So many of his once great pubs in the Manchester remain long-term closed, which bears testimony to his draconian style of management.

There's a couple of Sam Smith's pubs in Stockport, I drank in them years ago, probably both closed now.

Village people legendary song "YMCA" will live on for many more decades and perhaps longer than that.
What a great party song.

"In the navy" is also a simple yet catchy song.  :hi:

The sort of actor that appeared in a lot of films and tv shows but you could never put a name to his face.

Big woman, unhealthy?

She was briefly a national treasure, people put aside the stuff about her chaining up prisoners giving birth.

Hmmm i'm sure it will all come out in the end but she had some strong / controversial views and wasn't afraid to voice them in a forthright manner.

Nobody should be murdered for voicing their opinion but she probably pissed off more than the average person over the years

Exactly that, I didn't agree with her policies but she didn't deserve that sort of ending to her life.

The audience regularly appears to be anti Brexit and anti reform.
Although they claim it's a cross section reflecting the current political situation, there have been occasions when a panelist has asked for a show of hands and it's been rather embarrassing for Fiona Bruce.

Disagree, she is dead totally disrespectful. She will have family who are mourning no matter how or why she died.

Surely "Good riddance! Hope she burns in hell!" is inappropriate and disrespectful in any circumstances, particularly under the heading 'Obituary - Rest In Peace.'

I just pointed out the fact that nothing was known about a possible murder at the point he posted and i'm sure that he wouldn't have posted what he did if the murder had been known about

Yes it is disrespectful and indeed I and i'm sure many others initial thoughts were along the lines of good riddance but I / We decided against posting those comments for the very reasons you mention

Offline Vice Admiral

I can't see how the way someone died – whether quietly in their sleep or in horrific circumstances – has any bearing on what comments are appropriate in the aftermath.

A modicum of respect is surely the default position (unless it's Hitler or the Yorkshire Ripper)?

That of course doesn't mean that people shouldn't feel free to make negative but judicious comments about the dead person's opinions, activities or reputation.

While I found kayak's comment distasteful and inappropriate as well, I've thought about it and I will say the same and worse when other even higher profile characters shuffle off this mortal coil should they predecease me and I would wish the circumstances to be equally horrific.

So I'm not complaining about the comment, it just depends which side of the fence you're viewing it from.

Personally I would save that sort of comment for a Savile-like figure, not a politician I disagreed with.

It says more to me about the character of the person making the comment than it does about the deceased.

Disregarding the tone and how inappropriate your comment is seen to be, can you explain why you have brought politics into it on this the obituary - rest in peace thread? You should know by now political posts anywhere other than in the dedicated politics thread comes with a ban,

Perhaps I was referring to 'a Savile-like figure' ?

Many on here have short memories and while he was alive Savile was adored by many, often older women.

While quite a few had their suspicions and he was a creepy character, it was only after his death that it all came out.

Perhaps there are similar high profile public figures, still alive, that fall into that bracket.  I can think of a couple.

Saying to any person what he said is nasty. There is no justification for it. I would call out and disapprove of any other comments made about anyone else.
This is nothing to do with politics, keep that out of things. It has everything to do with decency.
You should never speak bad about anyone who have sadly died.
