Little shocked by this. A presenter of Live-Aid, Whistle Test, etc, so somebody of my generation, and it's a little sobering to be reminded of time's remorseless progression and the mortality of what were once young, omnipresent, contemporary figures.
RIP Andy.

Great broadcaster, though certainly had his troubles in life.  I can't stand folk or world music but he did make it sound more interesting than it was!

Desmond Morris, the TV Zoologist and author has died, aged 98. RIP

He used to be on the screens all the time back in the black & white days, then wrote a controversial book, The Human Zoo, must have retired on the proceeds as he hasn’t been featured for years.

Offline ShadowProclamation

His 1967 book 'The Naked Ape' was the one which caused a lot of controversy. However, it sold well and he made a lot of money from it. 'The Human Zoo' was the sequel.

It's always rather fun when people who later became famous happened to know each other when they were young, particularly if the pairing was somewhat incongruous.

Desmond Morris’s obituary in yesterday’s Times included this:  “At the age of 17 he rowed a girlfriend, Diana Fluck (later better known as the actress and singer Diana Dors), who was three years his junior, to an island on the family lake. He showed her how to fish and she taught him the jitterbug, which she had learnt from American GIs. ‘She taught me how to kiss,’ he once said.”

Dors changed her name from Fluck when she made her first film.  Wikpedia has this:  “They asked me to change my name. I suppose they were afraid that if my real name Diana Fluck was in lights and one of the lights blew...”

Pity, really.  “Fluck” has a certain resonance, and suited Dors’ image and her rackety private life.

Perhaps mainly for local interest, but Merseyside actress Elsie Kelly died earlier this week aged 89.

She was born in Liverpool and never lost her love for the city, along with her friendship with Ken Dodd.

Although Elsie appeared in many TV dramas and soaps, she's possibly best known for her role as Noreen Maltby, the mother of Johnny Vegas' character Geoff Maltby in the TV series Benidorm.

Locally however, Elsie was famous for her role as tutor and coach at Elliot Clarke Performing Arts School, and also as the director of scores of productions during nearly 50 years with The Birkenhead Operatic Society.

Many of us also knew her by her married name as Elsie Hall. R.I.P.

From Wiki:
Quote
In 1934 she met Sergei Rachmaninoff after having stepped in for him for a concert
She was born in 1925 - i.e. she was nine years old when she stood in for him!

Sad to hear that former F1 driver Alex Zanardi has died. He competed in F1 between 1991 and 1999 before loosing both legs in a horrific Indy car race. He later became a paralympic winning four gold medals in cycling

He didn't have very good luck. He also suffered serious head injuries after his handbike crashed into an incoming truck in 2020. He was probably bed bound.

WTF is it with some people seemingly offended by anything and everything  :dash:

Personally I think it's funny as fuck and let's face it someone having a joke at their own expense on their headstone and making (i'd assume) the majority of other people laugh in a place that's full of sorrow is surely a good thing.

I don't see why he can't have what he wants on his own gravestone as it's a true extension of his real world persona

Actor Alan Rothwell aged 89, probably best remembered for Picture Box but also some minor stints in soapland. By all accounts a decent bloke on and off set, probably deserved more roles.

Blimey! That triggered a memory of early secondary school and English teachers without a lesson plan that took the class off to the TV room to watch these. All very random but distinctive opening credits and theme tune. Cheers. EM

One of Scotland's best and most loved rugby union players, Scott Hastings, has died at age 61.

He remains the most-capped Scotland male centre of all-time.

Scott Hastings won 65 caps for Scotland over 11 years (a record at that time), represented the British & Irish Lions on 12 occasions on two tours and played 13 games for the Barbarians

A true rugby legend RIP.
