It's not that strange, Eastern Russia has lots of different ethnic groups and can look similar to people not that far to the East of them, or on the other hand its perfectly possible to have Russian (or any other) nationality but be ethically Chinese, Thai etc.

Very true. Some of the far eastern Russian cities, more of the inhabitants are ethnically Chinese than Russian.
