Any other crossworders out there?  Thought we might have a space for clues or answers vaguely related to the site topic.  Cyclops in Private Eye has lots of rude clues, but they occasionally pop up elsewhere.

Cryptic crosswords have a load of conventions.

Meaning of answer usually comes at start or end of clue. In this case, at start: calmly.

Rest of clue tells you how to arrive at answer. “Start to enfold” tells you there is an E in the answer. “Escort” gives you date, finally “artful” gives you sly. Put e, and date, within sly gives sedately.

Used to do a lot…but do them so slowly tend to reserve them nowadays to while away time on long rail journeys.

Even my usual standards that particular Times crossword (Saturdays) was slow going…I’ve just picked it up 24 hours later and got last 4 or 5 clues.

I’ll probably resort to that at some point. (As a general rule, do most of crosswords I do nowadays just to pass time on long train journeys, so don’t mind taking “ages”…but always useful to have a short cut option.)

The Times online crosswords, Monday to Friday, have a 'reveal' function which is useful  either to check you have the correct answer or cheat and get the answer to difficult clues.

i'm not a fan of 'sex' as a clue for IT - it has a whiff of the Carry On/Seaside Postcard about it.  Mind you, the other thing I have seen IT clued as is 'vermouth', which baffled me then and I have still to hear a good explanation.

IT is short for Italian, where vermouth originates from.  There is a cocktail known as a Gin and It which was originally called Gin and Italian.
