Just heard the very sad news that Jeff Beck has died, aged 78.

Bloody hell - always went to see him when he played in London as he delivered a brilliant show every time.

Don't think he ever got the public recognition he deserved, but all his peers rated him as one of the greats.

Gutted about this. A totally unique player, impossible to copy.

I first heard about him when this got a lot of radio airplay in 1967. Since then, I like the Yardbirds, which he was part of.

Yeah he replaced Clapton at the Yardbirds and apparently the Rolling stones wanted him too

He was before my time really so not on my radar when I was growing up as it had moved onto talentless pricks with pre programmed keyboards by then
I remember watching a series on the BBC about 10 or 15 years ago which has been repeated a few times called something like guitar heroes at the BBC and he featured on it which is when his name stuck in my mind

They had Gene Simmonds from Kiss talking about him this morning and he said what a great range of ability Beck had in terms of different styles that he could adapt to and the fact that he adapted to remain current

He also said how he had played Nessun Dorma with an orchestra

The song became a bit of a football anthem in later years.

Brian May of Queen said he set the standards for other guitarists to follow.

Certainly some talented musicians there. Front row left looks like a young Stuart Adamson ex Skids and Big Country.  :unknown:

That's Richard Thompson in the bottom-right corner, who has just become the nation's greatest living guitarist.

As far as guitar players go there in my mind the very best was Les Paul genius that bloke.

Even invented multitrack recording!

Here he is with Mary Ford who's a bit of alright in herself:) this was from 1951  so 72 years ago!!!

Of course they had to play Hi Ho Silver Lining in the reports. Has ever a musician's most famous song been so untypical of his work?  For a start he barely sang on most of the other material he recorded and much of it was instrumental.

Always preferred him to Clapton. Thought he was a more exciting and original guitarist.

I mean, NOBODY was playing guitar like this in 1965. No wonder Hendrix adored him.

I always preferred you, his tone was too harsh even when delicate.
