Author Topic: Unwanted user name autofill on ukp  (Read 844 times)

For some reason which I don't understand, until recently when I would start to load ukp's website on my laptop in Google Chrome Incognito the domain name would pop up as soon as I'd typed the first letter ie 'u' then, worse, my user name would appear when I put the cursor on the user name box. This was a real source of concern to me because it meant that if my nearest and dearest were to use the laptop they could very easily inadvertently learn of my hobby and cast a disapproving eye over my past reviews  .

By blundering my way through Settings I've managed to stop prediction of the domain name (at the same time losing quite a few  useful shortcuts) but nothing I do seems to stop my user name being anticipated. My security is therefor still somewhat compromised.

I would be interested to learn if others experience this and very much appreciate any advice as to how to stop it. I  don't have the problem on my old desktop and both run on Windows7 with Chrome as default search engine. As is probably obvious, my IT skills are pretty basic.

Thanks

You're probably seeing this because you've used a normal (not incognito) browser to log into ukpunting.

To stop the autofill of the domain name, in a normal browser:
- Go into browser menu, the three vertical dots at the top right.
- Select History and go to the "History" selection above the list of recent history.
- Use the Search (top right) to search for ukpunting and delete the lines.
- If it still autofills, there's probably a bookmark to the site, just delete it.

To stop the name autofilling, again in a normal browser:
- start typing your user name until it shows as an option you can select.
- Down arrow to select the username and press Shift and Delete, the name should disappear.

To stop your password being remembered go to the menu in a normal browser:
- Select settings.
- Search for password, you'll see "password manager", select that.
- Find ukpunting in the list of sites, click the 3 dots to the right (more actions) and select Remove

There's also an option to save usernames / passwords in a google account that works across multiple devices.  I don't use that so not sure how to fix it.

Hope that helps.

Just realised - you can stop the autofill in an incognito browser using the method I suggested above.

Why not have different users set up on your laptop?  You use yours and each of the other sharers use theirs.

From many versions back Windows has supported the creation of different users (so that you could reserve Admin rights to just those really in charge of the computer).  Set your screen timeout and security lockout to a suitable short interval and sell the idea that each user has their own private document store, personal browser bookmarks, personal choice of browser, etc.
As Admin you can lockdown folders and drives to keep each user's files private and separate, better still attach a (NAS) drive to your home router and each person stores their stuff on there or on USB drives they detach from the laptop.  You as admin should be the only one saving anything on the laptop.

If each user also has their own device (phone, tablet, desktop) then you can enable syncing of browser profiles for them so that when they login to their user on the laptop and open their browser it will sync their browser bookmarks, autofills, site passwords etc. all as a matter of "convenience".
