I know someone who went out there earlier this year and away from the main big cities and tourist area, said they treated him like a King (- don't see too many westerners) and, he said, that included the ladies! So never had to paid for it. However he is much younger - early 30's.

ah - then he probably didn't go there then. Yes he is white and he did all the "stans" - not Pakistan but the other 5 spending a month or so in each - except Afghanistan which was only for a few days. Across his whole trip he said that when away from big cities or tourist areas, all the local people were lovely and very hospitable, not so much the border officials. And yes, even the men were very friendly - but great discretion was needed spending any private time with a lady.

Should add that he is a very seasoned solo traveler - especially for "off the beaten track" areas of the world!

I personally think your friend has lied to you, as there was a confusion with the city in Iraq. I know very well how the kurdish community are in london. I'm sure they are more friendly and hospitable as ive experience this in some of the middle East countries I've been to but girls after you and stuff is very exaggerated.

Erbil is pretty quiet, safe & peaceful.  As an American I could get in without a visa beforehand - there was a simple visa on arrival.  Booze is available in the Christian areas.  People great, food great - punting was a write off.  Massage parlors with Chinese, Thai or Filipina staff and silly pricing.  These places pop up and then close so my old location info for one or two will likely be useless as it was pre-covid.

maybe, i don't know for sure but there was no reason to. maybe he "over stated" things a bit, i don't know. I would not classify him as a friend but rather as someone i know. This is what i said:

I can't remember exactly where he said he went. he did 5 of the stans and, he said,  AWAY from the bigger cities and tourist areas they treated him a bit like a celebrity - being invited into homes for dinner etc. He said he had a good time with a few of the local ladies - i did not quiz him for more details!

For any that are interested it is available. In the hotels I’ve been for massage, both times it was Thai girls providing massage, first time I was offered owo and happy ending ($70), 2nd time owo, covered full service ($100)

I sold my van to a Kurdish guy- straightforward deal, very friendly, but when I went round to collect the cash I saw a photo on the wall of his dad or some ancestor with the baggy pants, headscarf and a huge sword. I thought. " I hope to fuck that van keeps going...!"
