Author Topic: Iphone: can you hide / password-protect apps like in Android? Eg Hushed  (Read 1867 times)

Offline NotThe

Many Android phones have some kind of password-protected separate space where you can hide files and apps. So if you want an app for a second punting number, like Hushed, or a punting-dedicated browser, you can put them there, and no one accessing the phone will see them - you will have to access the password-protected space and only then will you see your hidden apps and files.
Samsung calls it "secure folder", Realme "private system", Huawei "private space", Oneplus "hidden apps", etc.

Is there anything similar for iphones?

How do iphone punters handle these apps?

Other than protecting the actual phone log in (face id, fingerprint or passcode) not that I’m aware of on a phone that isn’t jailbroken. You can hide apps in folders but can’t password protect them, but they will also show in the app library as well and you can’t hide them from that.

What can you do with a jailbroken iphone, instead?

On a non-jail broken iphone, apps like Hushed offer a degree of safety because they require a login, but depending on situations, one might not want to have to explain the very presence of the app!
Not to mention that you can't have a hidden browser with hidden bookmarks, like you can with many Androids.

Thanks

You actually can have a hidden browser, there’s an app called Documents for example which has a browser within the app (and VPN) & you can set up a password to protect the app.

There’s also an app called SPV which looks like a calculator symbol but it’s a hidden photo vault (useful) with dual passwords, one that protects ‘safe’ stuff and one for the stuff you want to hide. It also has a browser within the app

I have found SPV, but it is more than £4 per week to remove the ads! Do you use the free version, are there other limitations?
I couldn't find the "documents" app - there are many apps with this name but none seems to have a password-protected browser. Can you share a link or the company name?

So basically with this kind of setup:
  • the SPV (or equivalent) and Hushed apps would be visible, but inaccessible without the password
  • the autocomplete would remain in common with the rest of the iphone
  • maybe google searches would be shared with your main account?

Thanks! And if you know of other, similar apps, do share!

I’d suggest that if you don’t know what can be done on a jailbroken iPhone, don’t jailbreak it.
It’s technical.  You may get it badly wrong and brick the phone.

I use a long retired iPhone that I keep charged, with SIM card elsewhere, and when I get the opportunity, put them together.

Documents is an app by Readdle, I can’t remember if I paid for it but if I did it’s a one-off purchase, no ads.

SPV - I use the free version and put up with the ads. I only use it for hiding photos / videos I don’t want anyone to see tbh.

I don’t use autocomplete or spellcheckers, or ever log in to google!

Hide, yes. Password protect, no (not yet anyway).

Group the app in a folder with many others makes it less obvious.

Better:
Download direct to the App Library, not the home screen.
Open settings. Go to Home Screen. Under "newly downloaded apps", tick App Library Only. Unclick notification badges.
If you have a crowded App Library (not hard to have) then it is unlikely to get noticed. Just access the app by pulling down from the top and typing the first few letters.

(You need iOS 14 or later afaik.)

I don't see how this would let you hide an app such as Hushed. There are apps that have password protection or disguise, including browsers and photo vaults. They don't let you lock other third party apps as far as I know.

On the other hand if you just want to keep certain data private such as text, URLs and photos, you can also do that within the Apple Notes app and simply lock that particular note.

It won’t hide an app such as Hushed

I prefer to hide my stuff in apps that can be set up with a passcode which is different to the one that unlocks the phone. Could be wrong but I think Apple’s Notes app uses face id / fingerprint / screen unlock password to unlock the protected note?

You can set those preferences in Settings…Notes…Password. If you prefer Face ID to unlock your note you can have that too but sounds you might prefer just to set a password. The password can be specific to the app.

Yeah you’re right - just my poor memory letting me down, I actually have a note protected by a different password
