Please can we refrain from getting into any religious arguments on this thread...........the Ukraine debate is bad enough!

I'm shocked (or not) that the security surrounding Rushdie was so weak. Must be horrible having this constant fear that some lunatic wants to cut your head off

Whilst he lived in the UK, special branch provided him with permanent security, and safe house's. Before moving to the US, when he would of had to provide his own security.
Apparently translator's of the book (satanic verse's) had been murdered or maimed, and book shop's having bomb threat's etc.

I have a signed copy, wonder if it has any value  :D, or will I get done trying to sell it  :D

I did not get it signed myself nor buy it. I know who did and he did not read much, as he tore each page he read  :D

I recall back when it was 1st published and some people were outraged there was a radio phone in and people were calling in openly saying they would personally kill Salman Rushdie if they ever saw him.
I guess the interviewer was also trying to promote controversy but he pointed out that it would be illegal and went against British law, this was met by the caller saying they didn't care and their actions would be following a law which was higher than British law

Perhaps the Fatwa is long forgotten for many people but for others it will only cease to exist once he is dead, I guess it's a bit like still chasing Nazi war criminals where there are still a few people on the case

Nazi war criminals may of actually  murdered people, or by been complicit in genocide etc.
This chap wrote a fictional book, possibly not even a very good one. A book which would of likely faded into obscurity without the religionists getting upset. Couldn't of asked for greater publicity  :unknown:

Yeah I wasn't trying to compare writing a book / free speech with the actions of war criminals but making the comparison that even 75 years after the end of WW2 there are still some people trying to tacks down war criminals therefore it's never forgotten so Salman can expect a minority to continue forever

Best not to make assumptions regarding religion, the bloke was born in California, but recently moved to New Jersey and the FBI have not established links to anything yet.

Just a reminder religion is a banned subject and can lead to being banned.

Yes I know and that article states there is no established links yet.

Religion is not allowed to be discussed on here and that can't be made any clearer, even the OP said "Please can we refrain from getting into any religious arguments on this thread".

I've tried reading that book half a dozen times and given up on the basis of "too difficult, too boring".
His non-standard approach to punctuation makes Joyce's Ulysses seem easy in comparison.
Personally I've long thought he should have been in court for attempting to undermine and sabotage the English language

Attacker is apparently of Lebanese parents

Interesting point is that neither the Iranian government or its mouthpieces such as FARS have commented, though much of the Iranian press seems to support the attack. I suspect their government don't know how to handle this: acclaiming the attack confirms them a sponsors of terrorism, while criticising it means saying that "Khomeni was wrong" - which would destroy the whole basis of Iran's post-revolution history.
Difficult to sell to their population either way

What has the police protecting Salman Rushdie from stone-age barbarians for doing nothing more than writing a fictional book got to do with the police protecting Prince Andrew? Your response is a bit of a non sequitur to be honest.

Has the head of state of a fundamentalist and totalitarian government ever called on 1.9 billion people to murder you for doing nothing more than writing a book? I don't know maybe the police are right to prioritise that.

If I was talking to you I would have quoted you, it is a general statement as a reminder of the rules and the consequences of ignoring them.

The best advice I can give anybody on this thread is 'if in any doubt, don't post it'.

Don't forget you are talking politics and that is only allowed on one thread.

You’d think Iran and Saudi would get together to sponsor terrorism but apparently they sponsor “different sorts” of terrorism. I’m not a fan of Mr Rushdie’s novels though he is a very accomplished writer and — on the occasions I remember him being interviewed — an insightful social commentator. I hope he recovers.
