Author Topic: Amazon price increases.  (Read 2043 times)

I was a little perturbed to hear about Amazon putting their prices up today.
However, I only use the standalone Prime Video service costing £5.99 a month, and from reading this it appears that will not be going up for the time being.
So, if you're in a similar position to me, that's good news eh?

I’ve just cancelled, and will take out annual subscription in a few days time before price rise kicks in (sometime in September I think)…which will at least protect me from price increase for 12 months, and will actually get me a better price than the monthly rate I’ve been paying (79 quid for 12 months, been paying 7.99 a month.)

(NB Just checked, looks like price increase was announced today, but does not take place till mid September…so time to implement my “plan”.)

You can bet your life Sky will be putting their subscription fees up especially for Sky sports and before the football season starts in Ernest.

Offline Bornslippy

My IPTV is still only £45 per year (all films all channels known to man)...never use amazon. there is absolutely nothing I would buy that I care for next day delivery. usually get it cheaper off eBay now

I don’t use it at all (not much interest in tv sport), but isn’t cheapest way to get Sky Sport by using a Now TV subscription?

Sort of. You can literally just get a sports pass without having to have basic Sky..  think it's £33.99 but I never pay more than £20. Normally at this time of year they have some deals on Sports Passes.

One thing, you don't get the "red button" service on a NowTV Sports Pass. Oh, you do get Sky Sports News channel on the entertainment pass. I never pay more than a fiver for an entertainment pass.

You’re doing darn well to get it down to 20. Even I would be tempted at that price when major Rugby Union tournaments in full swing.

Prime is going up from £79 to £95 A YEAR and it's the first increase since 2014. Still good value for the video and the next day delivery.

Offline Dickled

What I like about Amazon is that the one price gives access to all streaming quality when available, be it SD, HD, or HDR.
With Netflix, which I suppose is their main competitor, you're paying progressively higher prices for superior streaming quality.

You usually start with one of their deals which typically is 10 months for £199.

At the end you cancel rather than default to the full £33.99 fee ... you then have to play their "game" which, to summarise, goes something like this:-

Cancel subscription

Are you sure? Yes

Are you really sure ? Yes?

Are you really, really sure? Yes

How about 3 extra months at £19.99?  Ok

Then you cancel just before the end of the 3 month extension and play their "game" again.

Sky TV royally piss me off with the ease in which they will offer you massive discounts.

I am just going back with them after managing without them for two years. They're offering me basic Sky package with UHD inc Netflix and Cinema for £ 16 more than what I was paying now.

Setup is this week and I had second thoughts about the Cinema channels so asked them not to add it to my package. Straightaway, they're offering me 40% discount off Cinema AND a £ 50 credit on my bill.

Online webpunter

You dont need to cancel
Adjust the plan
I just did it rather than forget & be charged 95 for the year or 8.99
Or set a reminder for next month, too much effort
Paid the 79 etc which is charged on the payment date next month
12 * 8.99 [£9] = £108, so nearly 30 quid better off
Thats a half hour massage at the local AMP, excl. the HE 20
Thanks for posting

And it is next day sometimes before 1pm
& ordering quite late the day before
I buy most things [where possible] on Amazon, saves loads of time going out & not finding what you want
Or paying delivery charges for lower cost items from other sellers where delivery can be 2-5 days
Some good programming on prime TV

Prime is going up from £79 to £95 A YEAR and it's the first increase since 2014. Still good value for the video and the next day delivery.

I actually like that, not often you can barter with anyone.
Had a ridiculous situation with them a few of years back when they charged me for something I specifically said I didn't want.
When I requested a refund CS said they couldn't pay it all in one go  I replied I think Rupert could probably afford it and it was paid.
Apart from that their CS is excellent.

Agreed, in my experience, most goods available on Amazon are available on ebay, usually from the exact same supplier, and often cheaper.  And I find it easier to search for things on ebay.

When I have got through all the back-catalogue stored on my free-sat box, then I might consider paying for a subscription service.  That may be quite awhile, as the box fills up faster than I watch it.

Yeah but it's only good if you don't know what anyone else is paying for the same services you receive.

It's not so good when you discover, for example, that your neighbour or mate are paying £ 30 a month less than you and Sky won't budge on their offers.

Had more messages regarding my IPTV than any whore I've knobbed

Offline sir wanksalot

It's all well and good recommending IPTV but they can quickly be closed down.

I was late to the party when it came to IPTV and eventually signed up to a reputable provider after much research. I paid up front for 12 months but the service was shut down after a few months after a police raid.

It wasn't all that reliable anyway for live sports. Big sporting events would still buffer sometimes which would trip me out.

Complete opposite for me I find goods cheaper and of better quality on Amazon and next day is do much better than some random date or possibly never as it is with ebay.

zero problems in last 2.5 years. zero buffering (reall good virgin broadband). yes it could be taken down but £45 per year is fuck all risk. My mates, who recommended, have been using this provider since 2018

There is so much cheap rubbish on both of them, probably better going to a shop and buying what you want most of the time, but when you do get rubbish Amazon are far better to deal with than Ebay and the delivery far more reliable.

Ebay auctions used to be fun, and got some great bargains, maybe10/ 15 years ago, now they are usually mis-described rubbish and just pointless.

Well, yesterday I ordered an item on Ebay for next day delivery.  It duly arrived today, but in Amazon packaging, and with an Amazon packaging note!

Looking on Amazon, it would have cost me about £14, but I only paid £11 on Ebay.

Probably, but I can see no point in paying a monthly fee for Prime membership when I can get the things cheaper on Ebay.

They will have paid Ebay selling fees on the item too, the item was probably 8 or 9 quid including the postage.

I have noticed few offer next day delivery free on Ebay and used Amazon because of this, will look for this first now, useful intel.

This is true.

Yet although I use Prime a lot, I try to remember not to eat it wholesale. I've found black friday 'reductions' that are nothing of the sort and the occasional item that is much cheaper elsewhere.
Apart from movies and next day delivery (I don't use the other free Prime services much) a big attraction of Prime is a high standard of customer care and no-quibble refunds. Ebay are way behind on that (like most companies) at least in my own experience. It is probably down to Amazon's business strategy, which is pretty cutting edge. Working Backwards is a pretty good read of the advanced strategy and implementation Amazon uses.

Growing up I spent a huge proportion of my income on records, CDs and DVDs often expensive lavish boxsets too. That petered out several years ago of course but I still have a strong feeling that despite shelling out on YouTube, Prime, Netflix, Disney+ and Now I'm actually much better off overall and I never get that cheesed off feeling of paying a tenner for a CD that turned out to be a bit duff either. Basically, theses streaming services feel like great value to me.
