How warm you allow your pooch to get can also vary with the ethnicity of the dog owner. I've heard that Koreans like theirs really hot . . . .

Sorry didn't know that Staffies suffered equally despite the colour.

In my dogs breed it is noticeable how different colours react differently. In my experience anyway.
No problem mate I suppose they are like humans with the heat but yeah I had a tan staffie years ago and he loved the sun the one I have now it affects her really bad and I’ve known people with black staffies that they have to find a cool place(usually a laminate flooring or hallway) to stay cool

Staying on the canine theme, the stench from dog poo bins is horrendous at the moment, even just walking by. Slow cooked dog turd is quite terrible 🤢

I thought that that was what windows were for.

Driving with your windows wound down causes more air turbulence,  hence increasing  your petrol consumption  :scare: that and the fact that all you do is let warm air in on a hot day like today Having air conditioning on in your car also increases your fuel consumption so the secret is not to have it on too long then switch your fan to recycle the cold air already inside rather than draw in air from outside the vehicle  :hi:

No harm for the authorities to put these alarms out there IMO.

Of course that's not what the Met Office actually said, anyway - but who cares?  :D.

I've just spoken to an elderly relative and they are really struggling with the heat.

They have had the windows open all day to get a bit of air flowing through the house and drew all the curtains and blinds to keep the worst of the sun out

They have just told me that the sweat is running off of them despite not doing anything all day, unfortunately due to the distance I can't pop round and see them so the best advice I could give is to stay downstairs as the heat will be worse upstairs and to stay at the front / back of the house to avoid where the sun is through the day.

Excessive heat basically kills old people

If that became the norm? Still, it's not very humid?

One thing put me off about Thailand, with the constant heat and humidity - going outside was like a spacewalk or summat. After 15 minutes or so I really needed to cool down. It's a challenge even for the Thais who have lived there all their lives.

I could not just "be" outside in Thailand - whereas in the UK, even in this "heat", being outside is no problem for me.

Quite.

Then again, I honestly don't know how I'd manage without the UK Health Security Agency telling me to carry bottles of water, stay inside in the middle of the day, and so on.

The BBC News loves all this shit, of course. Same way as they love Covid.

Why single out the BBC?

All the news outlets have been giving this too much coverage since before the weekend. ITV news this evening, nearly all of the half hour local news and 15-20 minutes of the national news programme was spent going on about the heat, probably more by the time it is finished. I just switched to Channel 4 news, which has been changed to a "Heatwave Special Report" so I switched off.

Fine, give warnings so that people check on their elderly relatives and maybe think twice about getting pissed and jumping in a canal. But it only really needs to be part of the usual weather round up, or a brief additional mention. Surely there is something else going on in the country and around the world today, or is everyone having a siesta?

Here's the thread in question which was started by KN himself asking if anyone knew any info about the connection between covid and 5G

https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=276886.0

The actual question he asks at the end of the initial post is - Anyone got any specific opinions or knowledge that can shed any light?
However this is after saying that he's read up various articles etc about a possible connection so he's clearly got an "Open mind" about the possibility they are connected before concluding - If 5G is so super-duper, and uses an additional or higher frequency band, there's bound to be a downside somewhere, right?

There then follows a load of people basically saying you'd need to be crazy or a conspiracy theorist to think there was any connection followed by KN denying he's said there was a connection before posting the usual complaint about people abusing him on here followed by another post where he's still trying to get confirmation whether there is indeed a link

https://www.ukpunting.com/index.php?topic=276886.msg2839541#msg2839541
I am struggling, in between all the guff, conspiracy theories, low-grade abuse and general bollocks to be found here and on most media platforms, to find out for myself if there's anything in it.

I can't be arsed reading any more of the 250 or so posts but my guess is it went round in circles

So anyone know if there is a connection  :D

I felt the same one trip to Southern Italy. That summer was extremely humid.

After walking around the old cobbled streets for 10 minutes I was mentally willing myself not to sweat. The locals must have thought "another shiny faced Brit".

I was selecting which shops to go into dependant on whether they had air con or not. There's nothing worse when you're already overheated and then step into an airless room.

It looked like your comment was carefully worded to suggest that BBC news specifically, is in some way inferior to other news broadcasters. Something you have suggested several times before, and is far from the truth.

But we won't get into that debate again. Otherwise you will just hint that you have some shadowy job in the media industry, that you can't go into for privacy reasons, but it provides you with all the proof you need that the BBC should be abolished.

No connection at all with 5G and COVID apart from misinformed idiots on sosual medja!

Some idiot was taking a standard street lamp head apart and saying the elecrolytic capacitos in that were harmmfull, bloody idiot!

The only issue is that the mov bile telcos  want to locate more equipment by the roadside thats starting to become a bloody trip hazard! Reason they want to do that is becaue under code powers they pay bugger all to put gear in the roadsdie whereas landowners charge a lot more!

'Carefully worded'? Not really. Maybe I should be flattered that there's a handful of people on this forum who hang on to my every word and look for some sort of sign that I am actually Pat Condell or Richard Littlejohn.

I never 'hinted that (I) have some shadowy job in the media industry'. I said that I work in media and I won't go into more detail than that, other than to say I deal with certain BBC departments regularly, and know of which I speak.

You're right, they've all been doing it. I just don't see it as the job of some poxy 'news' programme to advise us how to behave. The last couple of days has seen them all go into overdrive, even though as I write this, no records have actually been broken in England.

And yet there was a time when the British Empire owned half of Africa, and India, Singapore, Australia and so on, and sent thousands of people out to run those places. Pretty sure the Times didn't tell them to wear a hat and sunscreen, carry a bottle of water and check on Aunty Margaret.

We had hot summers in 2003 and 1995. In both years the temperature regularly exceeded 30 deg and I don't recall the sort of obsessive panicking that goes on now. It was just presented as fact, and that was that. We got on with it.

One interesting difference between 1976 and now is the much higher BMI of those basking on the beaches in then and now clips shown on the news. Good news for the suntan lotion makers as they have much bigger areas to cover.

1976 was hot for longer, something like 10 weeks or more but it was also accompanied by a drought, I think from what I read earlier that 1976 peak temperature was something like the 11th or 12th hottest on record but again that may have only been 1 day with those around it being 30 degrees while now they are saying today may reach 40 degrees.

There are differences between then and now which is amazingly 46 years ago  :scare:
Yes people did just get on with it and there possibly weren't as many snowflakes however the above average death rate also went up by around 30%, it probably did make the news back then with tips on what to do and how to keep cool but people have forgotten that now and just like to complain about how things are today (Apparently it's all the fault of wishy washy liberal / lefties and the BBC for having the temerity to report news )

Let's not forget that the average population age is higher now than back in 76, median age was 34 back then and 40.5 years now while life expectancy has increased from 72.5 years to 81.5 years

People are more over weight which also brings health issues in coping with the heat

Back in 76 we were only 31 years on from the end of WW2 so people were used to hardship and putting up with things / making the best of what you had and not complaining / whinging as many had seen death and hard times for real

Yep, 76 was hot but it also followed a very dry 1975 and spring which meant that it was the lack of stored water that provided a lot of the concern.

Back then though rather than sun cream we had sun tan oil!! So maybe we should have had better reporting then.

Also don't forget that in the 70's and 80's we had lots of melodramatic public information films.  These were all year round. Given the deaths that have occurred in the last few days maybe "lonely water" needs to be shown again and traumatise another generation.

I just treat info provided in the same way as an advert, if it doesn't really apply to me then I don't regard it. I'm sure it is useful for someone, and those people are the ones that need protection. The fragile sensibilities of some on here don't rate higher than health implications of the vulnerable.

I sadly caught 5 minutes of the BBC lunchtime news where scaremongering was predictably in overdrive.
According to an "expert" they interviewed it is extremely dangerous to go for a walk when the temperature is above your bodys core temperature as it could raise to dangerous levels and that not drinking enough fluids could give you gout.
They really should be brought to task for putting this tosh out.
And as written in todays paper the job of the Met Office is to tell us the weather not tell us how to live our lives.
