A heatwave is about to hit the UK and the Met Office has issued its first ever red warning for heat. 41C expected in parts of England, but it'll be below 30C where I am because I'm north of the border. I've been in 40/41C heat before, but abroad, of course. I've got my small but good desktop fan out of storage ready for it. As recommended by Enid Blyton, I've got lashings of ginger beer ready for the fridge. Plenty of real beer at the ready as well. :)

''Britain was today put on a 'national emergency' footing by health officials after forecasters confirmed the country is set to endure its hottest day on record next week with unprecedented 41C (106F) highs on Monday and Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency issued a Level Four heat-health alert today covering the whole of England for both days, which warns: 'Illness and death may occur among the fit and healthy, and not just in high-risk groups.'

Health officials urged Britons to 'look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions' – while the Met Office issued its first-ever 'red' extreme heat warning today.''

Well it's definitely not punting weather!

I bought one of those fancy fans on Amazon that you place ice packs inside and so far it's made no difference whatsoever. It seems only an air con machine can truly lower a room's temperature.

I'll be keeping all curtains and blinds down.

Probably have a cold shower every hour.

Wear a cold wet towel around my neck.

Possibly hose down the flags and brickworks every so often

Forecast is 36 for my area on Monday. I've been in the Caribbean when it was 45 or so, however I'd of been snoozing on a beach with a rum and coke..... That makes the world of difference  :hi:

A small desktop fan makes a difference IMO, but it has to be near you, blowing directly into you face. Maybe you could have yours placed for doing the same?

I would not like to be out and about in 45C. In the shade with a cool drink is the better option.

Big difference is abroad you are most likely sat by a pool drinking a nice cocktail as opposed to being in work in the UK.

Aye, where there's a pool, a bar and skantily clad birds wandering about. Thus far, I haven't convinced the board this is essential in the workplace!

God bless global warming!

I'm all for it if it means mild wet Winters and scorchio Summers. OK so the ice caps may melt causing sea levels to rise flooding all the seaside towns ( hope Blackpool Rock can swim)  but new seaside towns will rise up and take their place. London will probably flood too as the Thames barrier won't be able to cope  ( hope King tarzan can swim ) Living in the Midlands I then won't have to drive so far to visit the new seaside resorts as Britain's coastline will have shrunk.  ( just joking by the way just in case their are any eco warriors on here )

Quite.

Then again, I honestly don't know how I'd manage without the UK Health Security Agency telling me to carry bottles of water, stay inside in the middle of the day, and so on.

The BBC News loves all this shit, of course. Same way as they love Covid.

We should all forget about WFH and head to office for the air con.

Jokes aside, if we not near a beach then this heat is just like a 2 day lockdown, can't head out for long, stuck indoors. Transport dead, cars may over heat for longer distant

Not having a go at you personally, but that's just silly.  How do people think the population of southern Europe gets around in the summer months ?  A reasonably modern car will have absolutely no problem being driven in 40C heat (though aircon is pretty much a necessity).

The big issue, a real one, is that UK flats and houses are not built for heat.  So babies and pensioners may not be able to get cool enough overnight and that can lead to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.

Look after your vulnerable family members and neighbours folks but don't be afraid to go there in the car !!

Def, was not, and if you read up on them, it is not advisable to use one, neither is covering the dog with a wet towel, laying on one is though.

Apparently not, the dog cannot regulate body temp and they hold heat in, as does covering with a damp towel, same as a coat in winter, poor dog does not need it, but owners think they do.

They are hardier than most think, only fast running does them in with heat, though hot pavements need to be taken into consideration.

If you have a lively one, keep him or her on a lead, I am I allowed to say him and her in regard to dogs?  :D

They really do not need one and a very active dog can overheat in winter wearing one, for an older and or calm dog they probably do no harm, mine has a raincoat, very light and only used in heavy rain, he hates it on his back even though he will jump in the river unprompted.

Pet accessories is a big market, fed by owners,  :D, not the dog. No dog looks out the door and thinks fuck that, too cold, where is my coat.

I have been using a cool coat on my Black Dog for a few years now when it is really hot.
Her coat underneath the cool coat feels cool to the touch and she certainly does not pant as much with it on.
This is supplemented by letting her have a dip in the water or hosing her down.
It seems to work.
This is not the first black dog I have had.
Lighter shades don't seem to suffer so much.

Black dogs do suffer more from direct sun.

You are obviously monitoring your use of a cool coat, most owners do not and just assume it is doing good, but water gets warm very quickly and the coat traps heat in the dog.

It is internal organs getting too hot that does for dogs, they have no idea until it is too late, they have a furry coat for a reason and the one thing they struggle with is dissipating internal heat, they do not sweat, a coat does not help with this, unless you have a bald dog I very much doubt your vet would recommend any type of coat. They are very adept at keeping themselves warm not so good at keeping cool.

They have lived for years without them, most love rolling on snow or frosty ground, all mine have over the years, coats are a human thing that humans have transferred to dogs, in most cases they do not help at all.
They associate you picking up the coat and putting it on with going out, that is all, same as they do when putting your coat on.

Just if she is going to be exposed to high temperatures for any length of time outside.

Today she is inside after her morning walk and will only go in the garden for short periods to have a dip in the paddling pool I filled yesterday.
