I've heard Amazon drivers don't get paid if they don't drop off. Hence leaving with neighbours. Bullshit system IMO. I only get stuff from lockers now.
I wouldn’t know — though that is the common system I believe with most of the delivery agents. The importance is whether the number of deliveries expected is a reachable target.
Historically, there was a time when there was a public outcry that
Amazon depot workers weren’t paid enough and Amazon responded by increasing the wages. I’ve commended Amazon several times and it might look as if I’m lionising them — I’m not — there are some things about them that I really don’t like, such privacy issues with Alexa and ownership issues with Kindle (though Bezos apparently corrected the latter once he found out). I can only speak for my experience of Prime and their delivery service.
When I’ve spoken to the Amazon delivery people, often a young woman, I’ve been pleasantly surprised that she was cheerful, spoke — and presumably could read — perfect English, and drove a nice new liveried van.
Some of the
other services have been barely able to communicate in English (how do they ever find the address?), and drive what appears to be their own or a rental vehicle.
DPD have liveried vans but if they don’t get me in leave it at a collection point a mile away.
FedEx drive a van the size of a bus, I don’t know how that’s efficient but they deliver.
Hermes and
Yodel are a bloody nightmare. Not ringing the bell. Leaving parcels outdoors next to the rubbish. A wrongly-completed or incomplete white card vaguely and often inaccurately saying where the parcel was left. Repeated text/email messages saying there was a problem delivering, wrongly implying there was no-one in to accept the parcel. That last ruse probably as they had too many deliveries, so yes, overworked and underpaid: but still a service has been promised and not rendered.
While Amazon will fix a non-delivery,
EBay have had to be chased down.
Etsy put on a brief show then have said as the payment is processed by PayPal, ask them (this strikes me as legally unacceptable but how much fuss to make vis-a-vis the money wasted?)
Tesco delivery service has got poorer in my opinion. They used to care. No option for bags (save the planet?? but greater covid infectivity risk) and if I supply bags/boxes for them to transfer the stuff I still end up with biscuits and breakables squashed under heavy items willynilly.
Deliveroo don’t even have names & addresses on the orders and have frequently fucked up. Should I just eat the unknown intended recipient’s shitburger for them??
There is tremendous demand on delivery services now. Amazon have tremendous advantages — of scale and management experience, whereas Hermes has obviously struggled. Perhaps their new incarnation will do better?
