It was sheer cowardice on Farage’s part.

Oh, and by the way, I think excessive and / or illegal immigration is one of the greatest threats facing the United Kingdom (and Europe) – but there are others whom I would trust more than the Farageistes to try to tackle the issue.  A Tory government, say, if right-wing voters ever regain their senses.

You may as well argue it was cowardice on the part of the major parties not to stand. It wasn't; it was sensible, as was Farage's decision to stay away.

That speech is bullshit. The Tories have no intention of dealing with the problem, they spent fourteen years proving that. I do find your faith in them rather baffling.

Interesting that you think a guy who pockets five big ones , acts like it's no big deal and pulls a stunt like this by-election ISN'T a novelty candidate.

First he said he didn’t want to be there with a bunch of nobodies, then it was police advice not to go, then it was Reform UK Ltd own security folk who said don’t go.

It would seem the police position is that yes they did advise the Farage team of a threat, but did not order him to stay away.

In response to your first point, the main parties were, as you say, sensible to have nothing to do with this farrago – but it was hardly appropriate for Farage to stay away from something he had himself set in motion.  ("Oh, was there a car-crash?  Nothing to do with me, guv.")

With regard to your second point.  I have no illusions about the various Conservative governments of 2010 to 2024.  Each was worse than the previous one, except in the case of Rishi Sunak, who did his best to steady the ship.

Kemi Badenoch shows promise.  I would put it no stronger than that.  And I think that the Conservatives do “have an intention” to deal with the problem of excessive and / or illegal immigration but – if they ever get into the government again (doesn’t look very likely at the moment!) – they would be constrained by many difficult realities.  Just as Reform UK would be (also unlikely to form a government in the foreseeable future, thank God).

The sad truth is that the policies, bad decisions and unavoidable realities of the past 75 years have made Britain much more “diverse” than is good for it – not least because the numbers involved mean that proper assimilation has often been impossible and / or that some communities anyway prefer to keep to themselves, speaking their own languages and sticking to their own traditions.

What’s the answer?  To gather together all the tinted people and ship them off to concentration camps?  The late Herr Hitler did something similar in the 1930s and 1940s, and the verdict of history has been largely negative.

Within the lifetimes of the younger members of this site, the majority of the English population will be of “minority” origin.  And there’s not a thing anyone can do about it.

And that’s before we take into account the imminent mass movement northwards of people from north and sub-Saharan Africa.

Charlie – the main thrust of my last post was an expression of dismay about excessive immigration!   We’re on the same side.

My dryly chucklesome – though hyperbolic – aside about Herr Hitler was designed to emphasise the pointlessness of considering repatriation as a way of redressing (as I put it) “the policies, bad decisions and unavoidable realities of the past 75 years, which have made Britain much more ‘diverse’ than is good for it”.

Of course I would never be so shallow as to make comparisons between Nigel Farage and Adolf Hitler.  After all, Hitler had real achievements to his name – including reducing unemployment, constructing the Autobahn network and, erm, greatly expanding the territory of his thousand-year Reich.

What has Farage ever done for us, other than help to lose us the inestimable benefit of being part of the European Union?  (While Hitler, to his credit, was a keen advocate of European unity – though arguably a bit heavy-handed in the way he went about it.)

Rounding people up who are already here is not stopping illegal immigration though is it?
The issue the Immigration Authorities face is proving which Country people are from - most (if not all) Countries require proof that person X is one of their Nationals. That "proof" means a Passport or Birth Certificate - guess what these people haven't got because they've "lost" them?
They would become a massive cost to us - it currently costs an average of £60,018 a year to keep someone in a public sector Prison, or £54,740 in a Private PFI Prison (source MoJ).

WTF they're providing them into Calais with 6 months free data no doubt roaming included
& how do the 'gimmigrants' [i prefer mislamics which most of them are] organize the crossings ?
Its all online & the 6 months data no doubt a whopping allowance each month will undermine Govt attempts to stem the flow
I hope this gets more attention in the media & The Govt call out Vodafone
Unfortunately Reform & what they promise to do they are ages away from being in Westminster
As well as helping them to get into Britain you can guarantee that the mislamics mostly young males will be using the sim cards to target white meat [in their eyes fair game] once they get here
Its the only option they've got given that most of them are ugly as & washing is alien to them [toilet paper would be a good start when they are having a shit]
Not exactly a 'catch' by anyone's measure which is why they behave as they do
IMO parents of young girls attacked by migrants should be able to sue the Govt allowing the hordes of misos at best a rapid downhill trajectory from there
They're letting enough of such males out of prison early let alone welcoming more in

In today’s Sunday Times Camilla Long addresses the issue of Piddington, an Oxfordshire village of about 350 people that is seemingly going to have to "accept 1,200 asylum seekers in its disused army base”.

Long continues as follows:

“All parts of the country need to play their part,” said Burnham.

How dare an unelected prime minister of a mere 27 days say that? A man who has spent more than a fifth of those days on a pointless “listening tour”. Sir Keir Starmer did two whole years of a “listening tour”. How did that work out for him? How about something more useful, a “doing tour” perhaps?

To people like Burnham, like Currie,* big issues only bring problems. They cannot conceive or shape any serious strategy or message. Climate change, immigration, economics: Burnham has not addressed any of it. Instead we have had empty gestures, reactive policy, pointless alerts about weather on a Friday evening, government by kite flying, a practice pioneered by Rachel Reeves, in which a government that doesn’t know how to govern just chucks stuff out there and sees what’s popular and what isn’t.
[*Edwina Currie had – apparently at least half-seriously – told Times Radio that “the obvious thing that 1,200 young men are going to need in a village like little Piddington is a brothel”.]

Long is right.  All one's worst fears about the kind of Prime Minister Burnham would turn out to be – shallow, crowd-pleasing, "brave" about minor issues and cowardly about major ones – are being realised.

I dont know the Greek migrant figures.
Our numbers for 2026 are so far matching our 2024 numbers which were about 37,000, according the chart in the article below.

I congratulate the Swedish government though in causing a huge drop in numbers.

''The hardline Swedish minister who slashed the number of migrants coming to his country has revealed how he thinks Britain could do the same – by toughening up.

Johan Forssell explained how numbers applying to live in the Scandinavian country had fallen to a 40 year low with just 4,200 claims expected in 2026 – compared to 95,536 in Britain in a comparable period to last March.

Since Mr Forssell's centre-Right Moderate Party took power in 2022, deportations have increased by 60 per cent and asylum claims have dropped by 75 per cent – numbers that Labour's Andy Burnham can only dream of matching.''

''Mr Forssell told the Daily Mail how ten years ago during the Syrian refugee crisis more than 163,000 people had claimed asylum in Sweden but since then numbers have fallen dramatically.

He said: 'There is nothing extreme about what we are doing – we inherited a situation which had caused enormous integration problems in Sweden, there were gangs and shootings every day.''
