Do tax haven based private equity funds run good operations?

External Link/Members Only

This whole area is complex and it is hard to do justice in this forum. But yes some of them will be and some of them will have invested 10 s and 100 s of millions into the sector. Some of them will also be running poor operations. There is nothing wrong in a profit motive itself. If they deliver quality homes at a competitive fee do you care what profit they make? It is the politics of dogma and envy.

Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband has admitted embezzling £400,000 from the SNP.

Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, was led away in handcuffs and remanded into custody after pleading guilty to embezzling £400,310.65.

lets hope he get 5 yrs at least

I’ve now seen reported, from several sources, that many years ago when Murrell ran Alex Salmond's office in Aberdeenshire he was caught having stolen party funds. Salmond reimbursed the funds out his own pocket and gave him a second chance. Definite mistake.

I agree it's complex and the funding model is definitely broken beyond belief. Obviously a profit motive serves as the basis for any business but private equity firms *in particular* use cut throat methods to keep costs down and fleece customers. Not just in care but any sector they operate in. And many don't even pay tax here. So yeah, I don't like sharks in the swimming pool.

In a typically measured and well-informed article in yesterday’s Times, Paul Johnson – former Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies and one of our most respected economists – returned to the question of the nation’s economic ills.

His article ends as follows – reminding us that the upstart Burnham is even more clueless than Starmer about the economy, and that the a Burnham government could be very damaging for Britain:

The pretenders to the throne appear as unprepared for office as the current prime minister was two years ago.

I’m delighted that both Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting are talking about reforming our capital taxes. Capital gains tax is in need of reform. But look at its scale. It raises about £20 billion of £1,100 billion of total revenue. Wise reforms would struggle to increase that by more than a small number of billions. Burnham’s call for a land tax I also agree with. But our problem here is not that we tax land and property too little. By international standards we tax it rather a lot. The problem is our current system is catastrophically damaging. Yes, please reform it. No, don’t pretend that is a way to repair the public finances. And please don’t claim that a wealth tax is the answer to all our ills.

As for Burnham’s general schtick that the current government hasn’t been left wing or interventionist enough. One does wonder whether he has been paying attention. This is, after all, a government that has increased taxes by something like £60 billion and public spending by a lot more than that, has substantially raised the minimum wage, is bringing rail and steel into public ownership, has scrapped the two-child limit and abandoned any effort at welfare reform, is stopping exploration in the North Sea and going hell-for-leather for net zero, and is implementing transformational additional regulation of employment and of rental housing. This is no Blairite tribute act.

The overall impression is that both those occupying the highest office and those vying for it have lost the capacity to focus on underlying problems while continually chasing the next day’s headlines. Any organisation which spends all its time firefighting, while neglecting to focus on its underlying problems and on its strategy will inevitably fail. So it is with governments.

Many people – not excluding me – often focus too much on personalities, and too little on policies.  (Reform UK and the Greens are personality cults, not parties with serious, workable manifestoes.)

In an essay for the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change website, a shortened version of which appears in today’s Times, Tony Blair says this:  “Whether there is a leadership change or not is irrelevant if it doesn’t start with a policy debate  ...  Trying to force the prime minister out before we know what policy direction we’re bringing in is not a serious way of conducting ourselves.”

Spot-on.

Elsewhere in the paper, Daniel Finkelstein expresses the view that Burnham would be unlikely to be a good Prime Minister (I agree) but could nonetheless win the next General Election (I disagree: barring something unforeseeable, Labour won’t win the next election even if they choose the Angel Gabriel to be the next leader).

Meanwhile, as ever, Keir Starmer is a hard act to cheer.  He has wasted precious Prime Ministerial time sucking up to the public by writing an open letter to TNT Sports asking them to make the Champions League final free-to-air.  As Martin Samuel points out, TNT are charging only £4-99 for the match.

Samuel adds: "'Hard-working people should not have to worry about forking out for a subscription to watch a game of this magnitude,' blathered Starmer, as if his policies are not in part responsible for the cost of living crisis that makes a fiver so hard to come by for some. As always, the government are very big-hearted with other people’s money."

But did you read the essay?

We’re probably in agreement that Bliar is a cunt, but yet again you’re resorting to ad hominem and using it as an excuse to not address any of the substantive points he makes. The fact that he’s a cunt doesn’t preclude him from having valid observations about the state of the UK government.  And for a change he’s largely on point.

We both agree the UK government is in intensive care.
You would have it that it is because we haven't embraced the US way of doing things.
Blair is clearly upset that the British public by and large don't buy his particular brand of shite.
I'm not sure why he doesn't join a party which is not more in line with his beliefs instead of pretending to care about fairness and socialist principles (a bit like his buddy Petey).

That is true, why has trust been lost and voters walked away from the establishment controlled parties in Britain & Europe? Because of mass migration since Blair's premiership. Frau Merkel calling in 2015 for as many refugees as can come to head to Europe. They have so much blood on their hands.

I didn't read the essay.
Pretty much everything I have read from this war criminal in the past twenty years has negated any appreciation I had for him for his contribution to the Irish peace process.
He's a Neoliberal and wanting us to go down a path which in the last thirty years has tethered us to American dominance at great cost to the whole of Europe.
And quite a few Americans as well going by the last few election cycles.

You don't blame the warmongers for having destroyed Iraq, Libya, Syria and Afghanistan ?
But you blame them for inviting the pretty well guaranteed human debris and misery that was the inevitable result?
I'm not denying mass migration was ever going to be anything but problematic if allowed to continue unabated but I always find it strange when the root cause is ignored.

A lot has changed since Blair was in power, and for the worst in most cases.

Many believe the nation is divided by “culture wars” and the population feels divided. This is fueled by misinformation and the rise of right wing groups like Reform whose followers absorb this misinformation and take what they read, and are told, as fact.

Whist Reform did well in local elections they are, in my opinion, a long way off ever actually running the country.

To be fair all their immigration rhetoric and how they would fix it is what the followers believe, whilst on paper it sounds wonderful it would be clogged up in legal arguments for years. If it was that easy the Tories and Labour would have it sorted by now.

The referendum to decide who should be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom – also known as the Makerfield by-election – is now 24 days away.

It’s not looking good for those of us who would like to see the upstart Burnham get his come-uppance.

A poll in yesterday’s Sunday Times has Labour on 43%, Reform UK on 40%, Restore Britain on 7%, the Liberal Democrats on 4%, the Greens on 3% and the Conservatives – remember them? – on 2%.

Although the Labour lead is narrow, everything is stacking up in Burnham’s favour.

The Greens at the moment don’t have a candidate, the previous one having had to withdraw for having mad views.  (Since when did having mad views disqualify one from being a Green parliamentary candidate?)  And now they’re discussing not putting up a new candidate.  Either way, it doesn’t look as if there’ll be a Green surge at Labour’s expense.

Restore Britain, led by Rupert Lowe, who for eleven years was the owner of Southampton FC – remember them? – is unhelpfully splitting the right-wing nutter vote.

Robert Kenyon, the Reform candidate, has been accused of offensive social media posts.  Nigel Farage has been accused of, erm, various things.

Meanwhile, the party of Gladstone and Asquith and the party of Churchill and Thatcher can muster only 6% between them.

It gets worse and worse, for those of us who (on this one occasion) want a Reform UK victory in the Makerfield by-election so that the upstart Burnham doesn't make it into the House of Commons and (almost certainly) into 10 Downing Street.

According to today's Times, in 2016 "Reform UK’s by-election candidate in Makerfield criticised Brexiteers for peddling  ‘nationalist pish’ and warned leaving the EU would inflict economic harm on the country.”  Not quite what your average Reform voter wants to hear.

Meanwhile, though the Greens now have a new candidate, “Party sources have privately decided to run a limited campaign in the Makerfield by-election after concerns were raised about splitting the left-wing vote and making it easier for a Reform MP to win.”

So, more lefties for Burnham.  Fewer right-wingers for Reform UK.

I’ll be astonished if Burnham doesn’t win.

They are run by rich puppets held up by US military power and it's no coincidence they are not democracies despite the 'leading exporter of democracy' being their sponsor.
Pretty ironic that they tried to push the narrative that they were minding their own business and were attacked by Iran for no reason while basically being US military bases .
