I've recently bought a Honda Jazz car. Pre-used / pre-loved / second hand.
Watching car reviews about it on YouTube.
They say that the demographics, of the people who buy this car, are old, retired or both ! (that's me).
What does your car say about you  :)

I drive a 17 year old Transit van mostly, so many things you could read into that  :D, most are true to one extent or another.

A Honda Jazz though, well, that is just giving up.  :D

There is an old girl near me, or was, she was found dead this morning, but was driving her Honda Jazz 2 days ago, her age is a subject of discussion, but somewhere between 98 and 101, now that was a good innings  :D

My car's called Kevin, and I don't like to talk about him behind his back.
He's quite sensitive and I always give him a little pat on the dashboard every day.

I hope you're not a white van man lillythesavage, they are the worst drivers on the road ( after uber drivers who always seem to drive White toyota's) . After years of driving a mediocre car I recently purchased a sporty little hatchback that has so many gadgets and driver aids it's like stepping aboard the "starship enterprise".  I still don't know what half the buttons and switches do. One of these days I'll get round to reading the manual  :unknown:

Honda Jazz drivers are the source of much ridicule as they do tend to be old; slow and IMO bad drivers, old people love them as they are easy to get in and out of, I had one as a courtesy car once and felt like a right twat driving it

I think a car can often say a lot about someone as different cars appeal to different people, whenever I see a Jazz or similar such as the old Daewoo Matiz (Think they are Chevrolet now) I tend to give them a wide berth and also get past them if there is an opportunity as you just know they will be annoying as fuck to follow behind  :dash:

I did used to have some nice sports cars (think 4 wheel drive rally style cars doing 20MPG even when driven carefully), gave them up a decade or so ago to save on my monthly motoring costs as I realised I needed to start banging more money away for retirement especially as I want to finish well before state age.

Always hankered after another nice car though and have had it at the back of my mind to get something again just for fun and sod the expense, after all you work for decades to pay off the house etc so what's life without a bit of enjoyment  :unknown:

Before the first Lockdown my friends daughter bought a new car, they did not want her old one that was due an MOT, I gave her 150 quid for it, I knew it would get the 6 month free MOT.

A 2007 Renault Megane, it has passed 2 MOT tests since, with no work at all, and my friend who lost his job because of Covid is still driving it.

I have owned 40 and 50 year old French cars, I have a 1980 one now, and a 1981 Fiat, Both will make a handsome profit when I come to sell them, possibly 10k on the Fiat, neither has ever broken down, nor has the Megane apart from a failed battery, knowledge is everything when it comes to cars  :D

Actually Lilly I have a question on cars as you seem to know your stuff and don't see the point in starting a new thread.

My diesel is about 12 years old with 100K on the clock, Japanese so still drives like new

Based on the age and value it's years since I got it main dealer serviced or serviced at all apart from an oil change when the MOT is done.
Last time I thought it probably needed a bit more TLC as I had a couple of concerns so decided to take it to a small local garage rather than Kwik Fit.

Firstly the car has a cam chain rather than a belt and my understanding is that modern cam chains never need replacing unless they are worn or faulty in some way but the service book does say every 5 or 6 years to "check or check and adjust" (Can't exactly remember without looking).
Secondly i'm aware that it must be 6 or 7 years since the coolant was last changed and it does degrade with time plus shit will build up so good to get rid of that.

My theory was that Kwik fit may be OK for tyres; brakes and changing oil but do I trust them for checking the cam chain  :unknown: A local garage was probably better  :unknown: But I actually think it was a mistake

I told the garage face to face what i wanted when I booked it in (change the oil and coolant and check the cam chain), they gave me a price for a full service which is easy money as they were doing the MOT too so checking tyres; brakes etc was already cover by that so effectively they get paid twice for some of the work.

When I picked it up I asked if the cam chain was OK and got the reply that you can't really check them / i'm not sure how you check them / you wouldn't ever check them without starting to have to take bits off due to accessibility or lack of.
So basically they hadn't checked it  :dash:

I then questioned that they hadn't listed coolant as being charged for and he quickly said "Oh yeah i've given you that for free", bullshit i'm sure they haven't changed it but have no way of knowing.

Then to top it off instead of dating the new MOT from when it was due they shorted me 6 days and dated it the day it was done  :dash:

I'm less than impressed but couldn't be arsed arguing, needless to say I won't be booking it back in there again anytime soon

So my question is is it possible to check the cam chain and do I need to be worrying about it  :unknown: My understanding is that it should actually be OK so long as the oil is regularly changed  :unknown:
Secondly how do I know whether the engine coolant was changed  :unknown: I'm thinking i'll probably get it serviced again next time and ask for it to be changed whether or not it was previously done

If cam chain is worn you can hear it when you start the car, for a couple of seconds or more. Coolant can be checked with a small gadget, or even the smell or colour can tell you.

Offline mr.bluesky

If you don't mind giving my twopence worth I would take it to your local dealer and get them to check your cam belt/ timing belt. If it breaks ( as happened to me once on the motorway) it will do a lot of damage to your engine which will be expensive to fix. Rubber belts need checking every 3 years or so, metal chain like ones tend to stretch slightly so will rattle more over a period of time. Best get it checked by a proper dealer to be on the safe side or it could cost you more in the long run. A regular oil change is all well and good for your engine but your belt will still wear over a period of time. I used to drive a Peugeot.  The timing belt broke. Cost me about £750 to fix, new belt, valves, rocker arms cylinder head gasket and cylinder head skimmed just for the sake of a rubber belt that probably costs less than a tenner.  :scare:

Timing chains and more importantly tensioners do need changing and for most competent mechanics is not a difficult job on most cars, they join the new chain to the old one and feed it around the engine, change the tensioner and job done.
They are affected by how regular you change the oil, which should be done in half the recommended interval and of course they can be checked, it will need the removal of some parts to get to it, but any stretching or play will be obvious.

Coolant and water pumps are often ignored, coolant should always be changed if it discolours, and anti freeze checked, with a timing belt, the water pump will always be changed with it, it gets neglected on cars with a chain.

If your car regularly needs the coolant topped up, do not ignore it, there is a problem and it is going somewhere, if it is going into the engine a big bill will eventually follow.

I am going to post a couple of tips :D

If you own a vehicle with an ICE, 2 things you should know.

Get yourself an OBD II reader/scanner, mine was 30 quid from Ebay including postage, there are better ones but I guarantee if yours develops a fault it will save you far more than the cost the first time you use it.

If you get a fault, scan the car, make a note of the fault codes, reset and wait and see if they return, often they will not, this is all any breakdown service will do, and why the small print says you cannot call again for the same fault. Then use Google, often they can be easily rectified yourself, there are forums and video for just about every regular fault on any vehicle on the net.
If it returns and there is no easy fix, you know the faults before it goes to the garage, if they tell you there are other things wrong, you know there is not, sometimes one fault code is caused by another, fixing the easiest first often cures them all.
The biggest cause of faults is a low battery, it can cause a multitude of faults including stopping an automatic gearbox to stop working, if your car starts developing regular faults, change the battery for a new one before anything else. Sensors and control units are extremely voltage sensitive. Also check alternator output.

Often a new battery and reset of fault codes will solve a whole heap of problems.

NEVER GO TO KWIKFIT OR HALFORDS, EVER.  I could tell you hundreds of horror stories.

Before buying any car, use said internet forums and Google, there will be information even on the newest models, pros and cons, even if it is only road tests but if it uses engines used before, a mine of information on regular problems.
Always use a very good car check company, not just HPI, many cars are repaired and not recorded for one reason or another, it will tell you every time the car has been sold, and if it was sold by a salvage company, often showing pictures of the damage.

This video may be on an old vehicle, I found it because mine had this problem caused by a flat battery, but it gives you an idea of how a scanner and the internet can save you time and money, how many of these went to a main agent with this problem ?

I had to collect one from a customer of Ford yesterday, the owner found a picture of it badly damaged, they had to return his money, plus a bit more no doubt, because they had not done the relevant and available checks.

About as good as when it came out the factory, people used to take the piss out of Skoda's but they were actually always quite well engineered cars whereas the Lada Riva should have been the but of all the jokes.

I knew a couple of people who had Riva's and nothing but trouble, they thought by buying a brand new car which was cheap it would be better than buying a second hand one for the same price that was a few years old, wrong

One guy I worked with had 2 or 3 Rivas thinking he'd been unlucky with the previous ones only to have the same constant problems with the new one they sold him.
The sales guy must have been good as when they brought out another model the Samara he bought one of them too as it was an upgraded and better model which wouldn't have the same problems, anyway that was a pile of shit too  :D

Finally he admitted defeat and bought a second hand Toyota, kept it for years with no problems and loved driving it

Or the Intergrale or maybe a Subaru? ,  AWD does take a bit of fun out of them, I did love the RS6 Avant, shredded tyres less often the the C63s, best of the lot though was the E39 M5, they feel unbreakable and the manual gearbox gives a real drive feel.

Owning a quattro

The Lancia Intergrale  had 46 wins, 6 constructors championships in a row, 87-92 and a couple of driver champions, Audi cannot match it  :hi:

Who said you have inadequate dick syndrome? .

Only 1 car I have driven gave me that, I felt it myself while driving it, the Bentley Bentayga, annoyingly the windows were only factory tint, nearly as much a pointless vehicle as the Mercedes G63 which unlike the Bentley was also horrible to drive.

Nothing wrong with big engine cars, Suv,s are a different story  :D
