Love this program, IMO the best thing the BBC has made for years and season 6 starts this Sunday.

It's a shame they have said it's the last series but perhaps all things have to end sometimes and it's finishing before the story gets a bit too old hat etc  :unknown:
They did say on the breakfast news that there is also a film in the making

I have to admit that despite all the rave reviews this is one series I never really got into. Probably watched the first one or two episodes but never got me hooked, perhaps I should give it another try  :unknown: just as a matter of interest there has been a large Peaky Blinders mural painted in Digbeth Birmingham where the series is supposed to be set to advertise the new series.

Yeah i'm not sure if she died during or after filming or indeed whether she's in it at all, presumably she gets written out in a twist to the plot

All series are on the I Player, no good watching the latest one unless you've seen the others really, personally I like it as it's quite gritty but sometimes you just don't get a feel for a program

I think that the first episode opening were there was a caption;

   "BIRMINGHAM 1919"

Summed it up very well, that was its time and where is was best set!...

Offline Adoniron

I think it went downhill when they moved it from BBC2 to BBC1. It became less edgy and the storylines seemed too rushed. The most recent season needed a couple of episodes more to tell the story properly rather than leaving it to the viewer to fill in the gaps. I will still watch it though.

A bit like Breaking Bad, another series that got rave reviews so I watched it a few times but never really got me hooked. Killing Eve I enjoyed but hopefully this will be the last series as it has dragged on a bit the story lines became a bit ridiculous.

I had a similar reaction after two episodes but I kept watching and it does get better.

Need to try to get in to this.   I watched the first episode a year ago and couldn’t get in to it for some reason.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I just finished the seventh season of Bosch on Amazon Prime and its pretty incredible that more people don’t absolutely love the series. Some shows don’t get the recognition they deserve.

+1 - the last few series have been rubbish compared to how good series 1 and 2 were IMO. Will watch it but ready for it to finish TBH

She won't feature in this series at all but there is a big tribute to her which I presume will be in the 1st episode

I understand it was before there was a chance to get any of her for the new series sadly.

I think there is a different dynamic to watching a show episodically one week at a time over each season over several years than trying to binge it.

Funnily enough, despite the hype with Peakys , I don't think the viewing figures are anything special - I recall a figure of under 3 million for episodes a few years ago.

Same with Breaking Bad. Was dropped by Sky after one serason and went to 5star for season 2 where it aired after 11pm over consecutive nights one Christmas. They then dropped it and S3 and S4 didn't air in UK. There was a gap of a few years when you couldn't follow it legally in UK until it appeared on Netflix from S5 I believe (with previous series on the platform too).

I like Peaky Blinders and will tune in. However, I cannot for the life of me remember what happened previously. Hopefully they'll have a comprehensive "last time on PBs montage' before it kicks off on Sunday.

Regarding the viewing figures average when it was on bbc2 was 3 million but the last series moved to BBC 1 and got 6.2 million. I would imagine the next series will be even higher

I didn't watch the first couple of series, and only got into it during lockdown.  No problem getting into it.  And then so taken, that I had to catch up the previous season-or-two.

TBH, I thought the last series wrapped it all up nicely, and am worried that this may be "one too many", particularly with the strongest and most-interesting character gone.  Will wait to see.

then you should recall that with all the build up, the hype and expectation the first episode is invariably a bit of a let down  It sets the scene catches up with all the main characters and tidies up loose ends  - be patient by episode 3 you will no doubt be singing from the rafters

What did you think BR?

I need to watch it on catch up as I sat down to watch it last night but had been out on the beer and struggled to follow it properly.
from what I did see I wasn't impressed and fell asleep but as I say I need to watch it while fully awake / attentive

3.8m for Sunday. Presume that'll creep up via IPlayer but to me the hype/publicity doesn't actually translate into "bums on seats". I can see why many would think it was weird, slow and up its own arse and give it a swerve. I don't mind it but fucking hell, it's miles too long. If you cut out the moody staring into the distance it'd be half-an-hour.

OK so i've just watched it on catch up including the start / recap that I previously missed and it made more sense, I actually enjoyed it and it's effectively a new scene / setting for the next chapter so the 1st episode was quite a bit about setting the scene

Interesting as it's the last series to see who gets killed in the end as they could effectively kill Tommy off but I think that would be a shame, be good to see what pans out between him and Michael

Yes thanks for reminding me as I meant to post the link to a documentary about "The real peaky blinders", it's quite a good watch and just shows you whenever you hear about street gangs and postcode wars etc these days making out that violence is a new thing it's actually tame and non existent compared to 150 years ago

I like it a lot as it's a gritty drama, best thing the BBC have made in a decade IMHO

While it is based on some historical facts it's only half way true but your logic would also mean you avoid any sort of film depicting war or boxing plus a whole load of history programs and any mafia films  :unknown:

It's not like i'm supporting them or any modern day equivalent by watch this drama series is it  :unknown:

There seems to be a distinct reduction in soundtrack in this series, I wonder why?  Nick Cave's stuff made it special.

Thought it was an okay finale but it has to end now, it really does.

Show runner wants to tie it all up with a big film cinema release now doesn't he? I can't for the life of me see how that could work, the pacing is all wrong for a film. The whole schtick revolves around the moody narrative moving at a snail's pace, if they abandoned that approach it wouldn't actually be Peaky Blinders.

As a fully signed up fan of course I watched the last series.  And of course, like every other fan I was disappointed.
So many story lines left unfinished, there was scope for a series 7 at least.
Also, in trailers there was a suggestion that Rowan Atkinson was going to play the part of Hitler (linked to the Moseley storyline) but he never made the appearance; is this being saved for the film?
But overall, it was bloody good

I think you have answered your own criticism  - there are at least 4 major story lines that need some sort of conclusion and that has most probably been on purpose to provide material for the film not another series

I thought the season generally was disappointing (and probably two episodes too short so that the storylines were rushed) but the finale was excellent and sets things up nicely for the film.

I would not be rushing to see a film either, gone off the boil in my mind, though the unconcluded story lines suggest there will be more as others have said.

Cheap trick really, takes away from the whole series with a poor final run.
