In some places yes, don't think it's as bad as last time though.

Yesterday morning on the news they were saying how storm Dudley had blown down some trees but the way they were talking was as if they were trying to make out this hasn't happened before and it's a new thing due to climate change  :dash:

Dudley affected the North more than the South but of course Eunice is predicted to affect the South more than the North so i'd expect that to be more newsworthy especially if someone near London has a pot plant damaged  :sarcastic:

Cornwall. It will provide lots of scenic footage for the TV cameras - they will love it.

It was as windy as hell on Teesside last night, I could hardly sleep for it howling round the houses. Looks like there's more to come too.

I was actually out in yesterdays storm all night but Going home later today as it’s supposed to be really bad later/tomorrow

My mates from Ireland have not been called on yet, so probably not as bad, real bummer if it keeps hitting the same people.

My neighbor and I were out just after 9, moving our vehicles into spaces furthest away from the trees.  :D

Of course there will never be a chance missed to ram things down our throats.

Rare red warning for parts of the South West. Good luck if you live on that coastal area. Winds up to 90mph there.

Those days are long gone, they get the money back if they do not find a way of not paying, really not worth the hassle, particularly with trade insurance, it is so hard to get these days.

BBC R4 said the SW was expected to get a very big storm surge but didn't elaborate.
If the surge goes up the Bristol channel / Avon with an 80mph wind behind it you could have massive flooding along the coast, especially the Somerset  wetlands.

All train services suspended in Scotland yesterday (not for the first time this year?).  All train services in Wales suspended tomorrow.

I don't recall such widespread cancellations when I was younger.

2nd highest tidal range in the world, there was also talk of it combining with a spring tide, talk about perfect storm  :scare:

Could be for a couple of reasons -
Firstly people just got on with it and it was before the days of H&S dominating absolutely everything

Secondly the train network had been run down so much that hardly any trains ran anyway  :hi:

I'm from London and I agree. If London had a major flood that would be a much bigger story than if Manchester or Liverpool had a major floor. Wrong I know but the mainstream media is so London centric.

In fairness I can understand that London and surrounding areas would probably get slightly more air time as after all it's the most densely populated area of the country but it does seem to be slightly disproportionate.
Lazy journalism perhaps but I believe more of the BBC are moving to media city in Manchester now so perhaps there may be a shift in balance  :unknown:

It's worrying when the BBC weatherman just said in his usual understated manner..."This weather is very unusual" :(
Just been watching the breakfast news and they are on location in parts of Wales; Devon and Cornwall, they showed the sea in some costal harbour in Devon saying how rough it was however while it was a bit choppy it actually looked quite calm  :unknown:

Now they've just been talking to some guy who works for a rail network and he was asked if this is the worst it's ever been  :unknown:
His answer was that he's never known it this bad in 30 years but then the second half of the sentence was something along the lines of "for early train cancellations due to storms"

So is it actually worse now than 30; 40; 50 years ago or are we just more H&S conscious with companies quicker to shut things down "Just in case", after all these days if they stay open and someone gets killed the boss is likely to be on a corporate manslaughter charge

What I see happening is the constant nudge theory and reinforcement that it's worse now than it used to be but it's been happening for long enough now that most people believe it so every time there is high wind or a flash flood it's automatically put down to climate change  :dash:

The wind has always blown and we've always had storms and flash floods etc, i'm happy to accept that these events may now happen slightly more than 100 years ago and that man made climate change is real but to listen to people talking it's as if this never happened before  :dash:

BREAKING NEWS - Traffic jam in London   :D

Not quite London, but a incident lasting an hour or so in any tunnel east of Tower Bridge and it will be in London big time. A northbound Blackwall closure cripples the city and east as it also blocks traffic going out into Essex.

The only option if the Dartford tunnels have a problem is Blackwall with the bridge closed. Some trucks with high loads are completely fucked, no way across the river at all, both southbound at Dartford and Blackwall are the old tunnels with height restrictions, only needs a chancer  :D

I'm sure most of us remember 1987? 15 million trees lost. Apparently due to a phenomenon named the 'sting jet' .. something they are suggesting could happen again with Eunice? Suspect just project fear?

1987 was considered the worst storm in terms of destructive winds since 1703 when the history books tell us thousands of people may have perished, mostly at sea including perhaps 1500 sailors in the channel and the Royal Navy losing many ships. External Link/Members Only

Then there was the storm of 1953 with resulting floods killing over 300 people in coastal locations.

So its nothing new, but the concern is the increased frequency of severe weather occurring (of all types).

EDIT currently only light to moderate winds here on Fylde coast? Three hours from supposed peak? Have they exaggerated this one?

I was looking for reference to a large storm some time in the 1600's but couldn't find it though it may be this 1703 one, 1703 was before the industrial revolution so not really subject to claims of man made climate change but what would we make of this if it happened now  :unknown:

External Link/Members Only

Also these numerous accounts of bad weather though they tend to talk mainly of dry spells and hail storms plus being hot

External Link/Members Only

There was a program on about 15 years ago where the weather in 1645 or something like that was chronicled as raining every day for months on end through the summer months.
Crops didn't grow well and when they did reap the harvest it started to get mouldy due to being damp and not drying out completely, modern analysis has shown that the wheat was probably affected by a certain type of mould / mildew which caused people to hallucinate when they ate the bread made from it and this led to the witch trials.  :scare:
We do still get years when it rains for about 3 or 4 months at a time through the summer, think we had once about 2006 or thereabouts but the cry was that it was due to climate change.
The reality is that we now know these events are caused when the jet stream moves and dips down below the British Isles but they had no way of knowing years ago.
Back in 1645 it would have been put down to God punishing us and now it's because you miserable sinners drove an ICE car  :hi:

Ha ha looks like we both found 1703 but I was off doing other things before finishing and posting

I do remember 1987 and it was bad, this was the "Michael Fish" storm as I recall  :D

I agree that these extreme events are and probably will tend to occur more due to climate change and that man is having an effect but it's got to the point that every event is now blamed squarely and firmly on it

The other thing here is "Since records began" but records only began for many measurements 150-200 years ago which was at the end of a known "mini ice age" so it's now bound to be warmer

Appears to me to be a classic of looking at the data subjectively rather than objectively and drawing the conclusions you want to, a bit like some people read covid death data and conclude vaccines clearly save lives and others maintain they kill people  :D
