Author Topic: Used vehicle warranty  (Read 1528 times)

So I bought a car about a month ago. Second hand obviously. I’m not made of money.  :D

Comes with 6 months warranty.
So the electric steering wheel adjustment is faulty.
Contacted warranty and they advised me to take it to a service centre of my choice and get them to liaise with them direct.

The service manager at the place I took it too said he is almost 100% certain as to what the problem is and to have the parts ordered/replaced, would not take more than 3-4 days.
Sadly he said. Getting the warranty company to have one of their own engineers out to inspect the work before the job is paid for……. Takes a while.
He said last time they dealt with this company. It took 2 days to repair the car and a month for them to inspect it and  release payment.

I’m thinking this is probably a simple way for the company to run down the warranty time (have the vehicle off the road)

Anyone else had issues like this.

I’ve already emailed the dealership I bought the car from and said if my car is off the road for any longer than a week. I want the warranty extended by that much.

Some warranty companies have recommended garages that charge less per hour so have a look and see if your one is on their list. Failing that, contact the warranty providor directly and ask about a replacement while your car is off the road. The thought of having to pay £150odd a day will get them approving the repairs alot faster

Worked in car repair for many years in a past life. I suspect it’s neither the seller or the workshop that really wild have any reason to bullshit you. It’s 100% the warranty provider. They will ball ache the workshop to do it cheaper, or source cheaper parts, or anything else to not pay.

I would look at the cost of the repair and decide if I was happy to pay myself and then liaise with the workshop. You could pay and wait to be reimbursed.

Is the car useable?

If it is within 3 months go to the dealer who sold you the car, 6 months is a bit strange, they are usually 12, 24 or 36 and sold as an extra.

A bit of advice for future reference.

A used car dealer has to warrant the car for 3 months, they will try and sell you a warranty package, if you are offered an extended warranty for free, run for the hills, it is the dealer shifting a rogue and putting it on the warranty company usually, and in this case they obviously expected things to go wrong quickly.

Obviously not a good warranty either, they usually have some trust in you and the garage, the garage will not want your car sitting around for a month and may refuse the job based on experience of the warranty company  :unknown:

I had a 6 month RAC warrenty on a second hand van that I boughtt.

Couple of issues within the 6 months, both times it wasn’t covered under the warrenty but the garage put it through as something else and got paid that way off the RAC

Offline Stevelondon

Lots of good advise so cheers for that.

The car is useable yes.
It’s booked in next month because I’m going on holiday. So don’t need a car for a while.
Yes…. I enjoy longer holiday breaks  :D

I shall keep you updated.

Sorry but just to add. It’s not a second hand car dealer I bought from. It’s just I travelled a fair way from where I live to buy the car. Hence them telling me to take it someone near to myself for inspection.
The place I took it too is a main dealer (sakes/after service etc) for the car make.
It’s a high end motor so I’m hoping to get the treatment the motor deserves.  :D

Failing that. Thank fuck I’ve got a bus pass.

Within 3 months the dealer should sort it, giving 6 months warranty throws you off their case, but does prove he OP has a poor warranty company, there has to be trust between buyer and garage without them doing physical checks.

My son has sold loads of ex Adison Lee Ford Galaxies, he gives a comprehensive 12 month warranty, free with every one of them, it is an age old trade trick with troublesome cars.

You bought a used car privately that came with a 6 month warranty?

Superceded by The Consumer  Rights Act 2015. Used that a few times, always worked for me.

I know a few people who have been dicked about by warranty companies citing `fair wear and tear` for a given mileage, basically something had to break rather than be worn out, I suppose that if for example a clutch started slipping at 60k they would argue it was normal wear and not covered somewhere in the small print. We all know insurance companies do their damnest not to pay out if at all possible.

#5 OP says he didn't get his second hand car from a second hand car dealer.

I'm struggling to understand if that means it was a private sale or auction or what? I'm not being pedantic, I just assume it bears heavily on what his rights are now.

Obviously advice along the lines of "back to dealer" might therefore be a total non-starter (pardon the pun!).

Always worth looking into an extended warranty that covers both parts and labour, and then whey up the difference in cost, I bought a second hand motor last year and only got a 3 month warranty with it

When it ran out, I rang the warranty company who said I could have the same warranty for another 12 months, so rang the garage who I bought the car from and they done me a better warranty with everything including parts and labour including the most expensive stuff, ie radio, heated seats etc for less than what the warranty company wanted, worth haggling with them

The dealer is very happy if you take out an extended warranty, it can save them a lot of hassle if the car goes wrong in the first 12 months, even though the legal warranty is 3 months, other things come into play as mentioned.

Some warranties are far better than others, read the small print, I understand the AA one is very good. Dealers like to be AA approved.

They can be cheaper through your used car dealer than going direct, they sell so many, but a large commission is paid to the dealer and salesperson.

If you are offered a free extended warranty, above the 3 months, it is likely to be very basic and for 6 months, if you are offered a comprehensive warranty free for 12 months, go and buy a car elsewhere unless you have great faith in the dealer  :hi:

Some in the trade are better than others, my son sold a car yesterday, and the old boy said can I leave my old car with you. for nothing.

He finally persuaded him to take 300 quid, scrap value currently, for a very nice ULEZ compliant, lowish miles car with a full up to date service history and a 3 month mot.

Just took it for an mot inspection before scrapping it, and he put a new mot on it. Will do someone a treat.

That is why I do not understand the problems the OP is having, if the garage say it needs doing they normally pay up without inspection  :unknown:

I don’t have Lily’s faith in warranties. I had a problem on a brand new car, discovered a dangerous flaw, “covered by the guarantee” but had to wait for more than a month while they got a replacement from Germany. They offered to pay my Avis hire charges for the period?

Not. Of course they fucking didn’t!  :dash:

Faith is probably the wrong word, just some used car after market warranties are better than others, new car should be very different, while they offer as little as possible and will deny problems to avoid recalls, they should supply a car if they have yours for a month.

Been dealing with  a Peugeot with inherent design faults for the last couple of days, so have a bit more advice  :D

If you are buying a new or used car, make sure it does not have wet belts, ask and avoid like the plague, look for timing chains or front of engine exterior timing belt.

They have been playing with these in the oil inside the engine belts for years, trying all sorts of different materials, they do not work, oil and rubber do not work, PSA group have finally admitted defeat and replaced with a chain from 2022 on the 1.2 puretech engine.

There is also a problem with small engine Mercedes vehicles with the Renault 1.5 engine. Wiring loom coverings have been soaked in peanut oil, guess what happens  :D

Daughter bought a Ford Focus 1.0 ecoboost from a dealer a little way from here.

Decent price bloke only deals with secondhand cars. She drove it home motorway most all the way and i followed her till she came ot the road  off the motorway seemed that all was not well she then stopped a little was down the slip road so got out asked her what the trouble was?. Fucking brake pedal is stuck!! and it was just would not push down never seen anything like that before ever!

Only a mile to go home so she drove it at a walking pace handbrake was OK! Following day phoned the dealer he was very apolegic, profuse apoligies he said;

I'll come over and collect the car later and give you all your money back in cash.

Or if you want i'll get the car repaired.

Or come over and select any other car and you can have whatever you like for the same money you paid despite any price differnce!

So well this wasnt the delaers fault, more a makers issue it seemed there ought to have bene a recall on that model.

So she said that was another car there she liked 300 quid more expensie and that afternoon he turned up with the other car quick test drive all well and someone else took the other car away.

So all in not what I'd call a bad response really!! Cars been fine ever since..

This is all related to the " WET BELTS"  had exactly the same with a 2013 Focus ecoboost after replacing the engine.

The belt breaks up, blocks oil flow but also vacuum system for brakes, only found the brake problem once car was running again.

You should have taken the money back option, because that car will never be right until it is stripped and cleaned thoroughly engine wise, fitted with lots of new parts and even then it will develop the same problems again in as little as 20,000 miles.

No we swapped it for a differnet car entirley, was told by local techs that the Ecoboost engines were shite squared!..

The brake problem was that the Pedal would not physically move at all!

Wise choice, as long as it is not a Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall 1,2 3 cylinder she chose to replace it.  :D

The brake pedal goes rock hard when fragments block the vacuum system for the brake servo, it will still work, but requires a lot of pressure from the leg.

The 1.0 litre ecoboost has cost Ford millions, strangely cars used hard and regularly, doing higher miles, last longer than those pottering around town on low revs, the highest I have come across is 92k before going bang, though the internet forums are full of horror stories at below 30k.

Ford have replaced hundreds of thousands of the things worldwide, through warranty and outside if they maintained it, repaired many more that were caught in time, but it is an ongoing situation, the latest belts are better so far, but I would not hold my breath, or drive one.
