John Lewis offer a 5 year guarantee on TV's and price match.
I bought a TV 2 1/2 years ago from John Lewis and it would have been well out of a normal guarantee period. It developed a fault before Christmas and was repaired FOC. It has just developed another fault and the required part was no longer available. John Lewis have refunded me the full price of the TV less £40 depreciation. Result, a TV for 2 1/2 years £40. Have ordered an equivalent and will start another 5 years.
Great service. (I have no connection to them other than as a customer)

If they have an equivalent that's the first thing they're supposed to offer you.

Quote
If we can't repair your TV, we'll replace it with a TV of equivalent specification. If no equivalent product is available, we'll either offer you the nearest equivalent specification or its selling price value, and we'll always do our best to make sure you're satisfied with the outcome.

There's no scope in the warranty for refunding your original purchase price less depreciation.

Not sure where you live but this would be my first choice place if I was buying a TV.

I would say that's what they relied on and in my estimation a fair deal. You can't expect a new replacement for something over 2 years old. Especially when no one else would provide any warranty.

They probably did rely on that and I'm not disagreeing it was a fair deal. It's not cost less depreciation though.

Did they offer you a TV of equivalent specification or the nearest equivalent specification?

The definition of current selling price for the set you own is cost less depreciation.

They seem to have acted really well here, why have a go?

Did you take out and pay for an extended warranty at the time of purchase ?

If not that is bloody amazing service in this day and age, staff in other places cry if they cannot sell you the extension, it is how they earn their money.

No it's a free 5 year warranty. I recently also bought a new TV from John Lewis and not only was the price the same as other suppliers, but I was surprised at it being free warranty also. You could also extend cover for an extra premium to include accidental damage cover for the same five years if you wished.

The overall service including delivery was excellent. I believe as Marmalade mentions in another thread their installation service is also first class.

Looking at the link above Richer Sounds also seems to offer a good free warranty for 6 years?

Yes I'd always recommend buying TVs from JL. I got a new Sony TV from them some years ago after they couldn't repair my 4.5 year old Sony and they even gave me some money back (as the one I selected was a lower price than what they said was the current equivalent). The new one came with a free Bluray player that I sold for over £100 as I didn't need it. They asked for the old TV back but never arranged collection and it was used as a second TV (with a bit of ghosting that actually fixed itself after another year or so!) for another good few years.

Sadly the latest LG TV I bought from them has an LED edge light bleeding issue but it failed at over 5 years old. It's my second room TV so I'll survive. It is fine for action games on console just not good with dark parts of movies.

No you don't pay for an extended warranty. ALL John Lewis TV's come with a 5 years warranty, no matter what cost. Which is why I bought from them in the first place.

Costco are good. 5yr extended warranty that includes a sort of concierge help-line too on TVs and generally cheaper too.

Obviously the catch is their annual membership fee and you have to still be a member to claim on the extended warranty.

I'm a Costco member anyway (the cheap petrol pays for my annual membership) so "the catch" doesn't bother me. My last couple of tellies from there are still going strong so I've never put the warranty service to test.

Maybe there will be a return to customer service across the board, doubt it though.

Indeed, I’ve had various white goods from John Lewis and their installation was faultless, combined with the gentlemanly attitude one expects from John Lewis.

My reservation about TVs from them is twofold. Firstly, as it is fairly easy to demonstrate, they know little more than sfa about TVs, which today are not only hi-tech but quite brand-specific. It may not be the same in every city, but when I’ve been to Currys, it’s been an enormous showroom, lots of TVs, easy to compare, and Geek assistants who know quite a lot about each product or check more info quickly and easily. Friends who have bought a tv from them have raved about the after-sales.

When I bought computers from John Lewis, there was frequently an Apple rep there who could answer every question about the latest Apple product. He disappeared. Similarly with TVs, you’d need a rep from Samsung, LG, and any other big names to get the best info. John Lewis staff seem to know no more that what’s on the display card. Currys at least have dedicated tech-heads who will try and get an answer. A John Lewis’ answer nowadays is more along the lines of “I think there might be someone who knows about that on Thursday”.

My experience of their service also differs from what’s been said in the thread. It used to set the standard. Now — at least once when I queued there — they had someone who was ‘expert’ at reducing an old lady to tears because of some small print that didn’t cover what seemed like a very reasonable complaint.

Experiences differ: but bear in mind John Lewis have been closing shops all over the country. They are not the gold-handed business that they used to be.

I am not really qualified to comment overall on John Lewis as my experience is very limited in recent years. I was really just commenting on the inclusive guarantee in the context of this thread. I may also have misled you in that my service comment related to online shopping and the delivery including the choice of delivery dates/updates/tracking information and the delivery itself on the day.

I rarely shop in store for electrical items and if I did my nearest John Lewis would be a three hour round trip + parking. I'm very much an online shopper generally and do all my own research online, then look for the best deal.

Currys would be the same ie online purchase only, including click and collect. We will just have to differ on our experience of their after-sales, although mine is also based on having two family members who have worked there as well as anecdotes from others  :hi:

I agree that JL is tops - I bought a TV there a couple of years ago but noticed that it was on offer cheaper elsewhere (with only a one year guarantee vs JL's 5year). I claimed against the price comparison offer and was told that they would actually pay me more than I was asking for since they had since lowered their own prices!!!  :hi:

You may find the guarantees and prices are identical, JK & Currys, but with JL offering an upgrade to cover accidental damage. I’m going on my experience (during pandemic) and that of two friends. I’ve personally gone from delighted to disgusted with JL guarantees in the past but of course others may have have had different experiences, I’m not generalising. The big difference from my experience which I think you can test by popping into both stores is the comparatively poor tech knowledge at JL.

I’d just add that if you haven’t bought a tv for a few years it’s quite a tech minefield just to get up to speed on things like OLED/QLED, colour depth, motion rate, PVR, mirroring & casting compatibility, room distances at which 4K/UHD becomes very noticeable, operating systems (some are using quite dated browsers), and remember to look at the sound system and whether it’s brilliant or whether you’ll need a soundbar. Finally check connections and how well they’ll match with any existing kit you want to use. Not all TVs are “the same” is a big understatement. Good luck!

JL and Currys both have advantages. If Richer Sounds do TVs I’d probably buy from them. But although we can share opinions on the forum, people’s experiences are not necessarily indicative for everybody. By going along to the stores you can check out quite a lot.  :hi:

I would agree that OLED can be pretty good value against pricier QLED assuming you are going for 4K.

Straight up superior to qled, unless you need an eye searingly bright picture, sorts out most black level and scene issues. Much better for colour accuracy as well.  Has a far more natural, cinematic look.

With the new safety measures and the ability to be insured against "screen burn" there's not many reasons to by a similarly priced ans inferior tech qled.

Yes, I bought my Panasonic from JL.

Bit of an Edinburgh institution for such things. Always found richer sounds a bit unwelcoming but perhaps that's just our branch.

Interesting, maybe I should give them a look. I would imagine much easier to deal with than Amazon if things went wrong? hate buying anything through them, unless it has to be next day and I cannot get that service anywhere else, would rather pay a bit more to avoid them.

My main TV is an OLED, this one is from over 5 years ago and was moved to a second room when I got the (bigger) OLED one. The old one is still a damn good TV with the Magic Remote too so I won't be binning it just yet for a fault that only matters in some dark movies! For gaming it is superb.

Then go panasonic next time. They've solved the near black crushing issues etc. The remote is shite though,  for a TV of that range.

I game on mine alot with pc and ps5. Also have an absolute fuck ton of 4k discs and regular blu-ray.

Look on the bright side. I wager your TV deals with dark scenes better than those qleds.

Bloke I knew bought a tv from a couple of blokes in a van parked in a Tesco car park.
Of course it turned out to be just the casing and various bricks inside once he got it out of the box.
He got the piss taken out of him in the pub about that.
His come back line,

My mate did similar, but with starter/chargers, he insisted on buying the one they used to show, not in a box and he could see was the real deal, they talked him into a deal for 2, you can guess the rest :D.
