I've been caught twice.
First time was near my house where the straight road goes from 40 to 30mph (school further up the road where at least one person has been killed and speed limits are broken a lot, but they won't park up there, only on a road that has had zero accidents ever.  They can claim that the presence of the van has prevented so-and-so I bet)
Tues or Thurs are the days the camera vans pop out in my town, and I could see a good half mile ahead whilst in the 40mph zone where the van was.
Slowed and my digital speedometer said 30mph all the way past the van.
2 days later, I got a luminous green letter saying I was doing 35mph.
Zero way of proving otherwise unless I was filming the road and my speedometer etc. at the time.
Had to pay £90+ for a speed awareness course.

Second time was on the M1 just past Meadowhall.
Driving along at 59mph as no real rush at 1:30-2:30am on the way to Manchester.
Two other cars in the lanes to my right went zooming past at some speed.
The overhead gantry camera double flashed for me as I approached, but not for them.
Motorway awareness course in Hull for that one.

Do lorries ever get picked up for speeding?  Every time I've ever been in "average 50mph speed limit" zones, with cameras, every lorry overtakes me and pulls away whilst I'm using cruise at 50mph.

I mentioned it earlier, never had a ticket at 56 mph on the limiter in a truck in any 50 mph average speed camera area anywhere in the UK.

You seem to be very unlucky :unknown:, but you could have fought both in court. you were lucky to get sent on a course twice though.

You can't do more than one in a three year period, so if his offences were more than three years apart he could do a second one.

One was for normal sort of driving and the other was a motorway course.  Classed as separate courses which is lucky.

I was tempted to appeal, but how do you prove anything? A photo saying 123mph or 71mph tells nothing.
Some police forces take away the option of a course if you ask to see evidence and give 3 points etc. if you lose the appeal.
Comes across as the usual guilty until proven innocent.

Never heard of that, as far as I know if you're speeding you're speeding and if you're within set limits (the upper limit in a 70 is 86) can be offered one speed awareness course in a three year period.

I would be very interested in reading about the separate courses for different roads if you could post a link to that information I would be grateful.

They do make mistakes, the first letter is generated automatically and they do make it hard to appeal, with threats to not allow courses, but the court can impose the same penalty and a course.
The last one I appealed and took to court was dismissed by the court or not contested, I do not know which because I forgot to attend, I had sent the not guilty letter and my reasons, the camera being illegally situated, with incorrect warning signs.

The one before that, I was not driving the car, could have been several people, they insisted I must name a single driver, appeared in court and explained I could name several possible drivers but not one and the form did not allow for this.
The magistrate asked if I had replied on time by letter explaining this, which I had, twice, and the prosecution produced to him, and said as far as he is concerned I had complied and dismissed the case.

Your first situation is difficult if they had proof, the second seems like you were caught by faster moving vehicles and it just happened to picture you, the first letter would then be generated, your acceptance of guilt probably meant it was never looked at by a human, just a paperwork exercise. If I was sure of my speed I would have appealed that one, but I enjoy a day in court :D

I had 2 speed awareness courses within 6 months. Second one was a motorway awareness course and the subjects they covered were totally different to the normal course.

FYI

That's a voluntary course, like learning to pass the advanced driving test, I was after the the link to where it tells you about getting sent on different courses instead of getting fined and points, if you're caught speeding on different types of roads.

billybobsmith was saying her got sent on one sort when he was speeding on 'normal' roads then another sort when he was speeding on a motorway.   :unknown:

It seems the motorway one applies primarily to specific motorway offences, but does include speeding if it relates to variable speed sections, presumably as against doing say 90 mph on a normal 70mph section of motorway.

I also wasn't aware there are around half a dozen different awareness courses that you can be sent on.

“The National Motorway Awareness Course for digital classrooms (iNMAC) is an engaging, interesting and enjoyable intervention that leads to a sustained change in how they drive on motorways, including Smart Motorways. It is an educational and rehabilitative option for those who have committed an offence on motorways, and who have been diverted from court by the police through the issuing of a Conditional Fixed Penalty Notice (CFPN).

Most attendees will have committed an offence on smart motorways, so the focus of the course is explaining how smart motorways work and the meaning of the signs they may encounter. However, some attendees may be referred for driving on the hard shoulder or failing to comply with a red X on a traditional motorway”
