Author Topic: Why are some websites running slow / not loading  (Read 812 times)

One for the Techies out there.

I noticed a couple of days ago that a couple of websites I use were taking an age to load or certain pages weren't loading at all and I end up getting the message asking if i want to wait or kill the page.

Initially thought there may be work going on with the system (mobile broadband) so wasn't too worried but the next day and 2 days later still the same.
Having switched the wifi off and rebooted the computer the problem still persists on my computer but I could access the same sites using my phone and the same wifi link to the broadband.
I have now just tried accessing the same sites using the computer but in incognito mode and no problems loading the sites.

The sites are specifically Betfair and Oddschecker as I wanted a bet on tonights footie, also had a problem over the last few months with the National lottery website that only lets me sign in to my account when using incognito mode.

Why  :unknown: and what to do to overcome the problem  :unknown:

Any explanations in simpleton terms please as i'm a Fuckwit when it comes to computers  :D

could be slow DNS? (dymanic name system).  when you input the url of a website into the browser, it goes off to translate the url into an IP address using a DNS lookup table.  if your service provider is slow returning the IP you will get a small hang, example, they're making changes etc you could see a delay.

Check your router and see if it allows custom DNS mapping, almost all do.   Change to cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or google 8.8.8.8 as they're usually the quickest.  I have 1.1.1.1 primary and 8.8.8.8 secondary.

could be the sports betting site got overloaded during big event?

...if you have kids in the household and don't want them to access porn etc, you could setup a wifi and stick them on openDNS family shield 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123 to filter all nasties.  :hi:

Likely causes are:

1. Your broadband connection's speed has dropped - do a speedtest to see what it is. If it's slower thak expected then try switching it off and back on again.  You may find that once the connection is re-established that it is goinging faster.

2. If you're on popular sites then they may just be busy. Try accessing them at a quieter time of day.  Sites like UKP sometimes have 100s of users online which puts a load on the servers running the site. This makes rhe site be slower as your requests for pages are processed more slowly.

3. Sometimes the internet is busy, so your ISP's service will be impacted.

4. Other users on your broadband are using your bandwidth and thus your connection is slower.

5. Interference from other people's wifi can slowdown yours. If you want to really test the connection stick a network cable in the back of your router and your computer and then do a speedtest. This will tell you if the wifi is slowing down your connection. If it is, then try configuring your router to use a different frequency that doesn't clash with your neighbours' wifi.

I am sure you've already tried deleting cookies - because that seems so obvious, and incognito would not use them ...

Have a complete reset, re start your device and switch the broadband off for 30 seconds and turn it on again, works every time for me.

Probably just those two sites were busy.  It happens  :hi:

No it's not, i've tried over a few days and at different times of the day so it's not that the internet is generally busy or those sites.

When I tried at lunchtime which at work on my break I had the same issue but both sites then loaded with no issues when using incognito mode so it's deffo something to do with being either incognito or not.
So basically something is slowing it down when "Viewable"

Been using both sites for years with no problems until now, is this most likely cookies as already suggested  :unknown:
I tend to ignore the messages to clear up unwanted cookies at it always manages to fuck something else up meaning I lose auto fill passwords or something similar

Incognito -> Chrome ...? You can just delete the cookies for those sites.

chrome://settings/siteData

... and use the search, top right, where it says "Search cookies"

Thanks lostandfound, I wasn't aware of that. It does also work for Chrome based Edge: edge://settings/siteData.

As for the problem BR is having, since the sites are responsive in Incognito mode, but not in normal browsing, that would suggest to me there is some cookie set that is trying to fetch personalised content from some third party site that is being slow to respond.
