So emerging from punting hibernation post COVID, discovered my SIM has been suspended as it’s not been used - no surprise.

Any advice on which SIM’s remain that don’t require registration? But that I mean can be bought for cash and topped up for cash without creating an account. Having a SIM sent to my home address is also a non starter.

i use Lebara, as most off licences do top up voucher there, lyca mobile is another option also

I recently bought O2 PAYG 321 sim on eBay for 99p to change over from Three on recommendation on another discussion thread. You could have it sent to your work place?

Did you buy it for punting use?

I bought it mainly for general use because of increase PAYG  rates from Three. I have no need for a dedicated punting phone as I don't have anyone to hide from :)

You do punt then?

Most supermarkets have SIM cards hung up by the tills. Even in Poundland.

The choice is yours.

I’ve gone Lyca.

Avoid Vodafone as the first use of phone or data per day costs £1 and gives you unlimited calls and some data and texts.

So I’ve ended up using Asda mobile.

Buy for cash from Asda, 50p

Automated call to link to top up card, no personal details required.

Buy credit for phone using cash and top up card.

All PAYG and as far as I can see the credit doesn’t expire unless you don’t make a chargeable message / call in 180 days. Calls etc not cheap but I won’t use it much and better for me as no need to make monthly payments.

I have a TESCO mobile sim. Was pleased to see it still works when I used it a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that was likely 18 months ago so it doesn’t look as though it expires. I only use SMS and voice though so don’t know about data. I just buy a cash voucher to top up from any TESCO.

Offline dg01

So premature in thinking Asda was ok.

Went into Asda store to top up for first time with cash. “Sorry you can’t top up with cash you need to ring. Basically you need to register. I’m guessing it will be the same in newsagents as it’s network driven.

So back to looking for another provider.

You're lucky, because I think the non use time is something like 6 months.

You don't have to buy a top up voucher from Tesco. You can buy them from pretty much any shop. Just ask them for a Tesco PAYG top up.

Why don't you want to register it? Seeking out and using a prossie isn't an illegal act in itself is it?

It isn't illegal, but on the other hand might not be looked on favourably by a significant other.

Your other half shouldn't even know. Registering a sim doesn't mean they suddenly start sending you mail in the post. I registered a Three sim before and wife doesn't know it exists. They don't even ask your address.

Offline Lewis

They don't even ask your address.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but Orange used to want a name and address before they would activate the PAYG SIM and allocate a mobile number to it.

I just gave a false name and address. The SIM was activated within minutes. I kept note of the details I gave them, should I ever had the need to speak to them in the future. Glad I did, because I had over £10 credit on the SIM, and Orange disconnected it from their network because the phone hadn't been used for a while (cause of Covid and lockdown). Quick call to them via another unregistered SIM, gave them the false details, and they reactivated the SIM and put £20 credit on it.

It just keeps things simple, nothing traceable back to me, no marketing in the post. Anonymity is key in this game

I activated a Three sim a few months ago and at no point did I give an address, just an email address.

I had same problem but when I got a new EE sim, it doesn’t work in my old phone as it’s not unlocked- anyone know of a sim that doesn’t have this problem please? It’s an old phone so not worth paying to get in unlocked..cheers

It’s my understanding that the phone is locked to the specific network who supplied it, so only a sim from whichever network it’s locked to, will work. Or contact that network to have it unlocked  :hi:

Offline yorks777

Thanks, it was an old phone from orange but EE wanted a silly amount to unlock it. Might just have to pick up.a cheap unlocked handset.  Thanks again

Offline WelshClipper

Just so you know, TESCO is great cos I went over 6 months without use and still worked.

However they do state the first top up must be by phone.

However again, when I tried to top up it worked fine anonymously.

In other words I dont think the policy is strictly enforced, they just want your cash   :D

Can you? O2 stopped selling them nearly two yours ago so the ones you can buy on ebay etc. are old stock.

You haven't posted a review in nearly three years, perhaps you're out of touch.

What use is a punting SIM to you?

Likewise with the o2 sim in my (very old!) punting phone.  Just went to Tesco and bought a replacement o2 payg sim, can buy top up either cash or card, very easy and completely anonymous.
