Hey everyone, not seen a proper thread on this in the search function so thought I'd get one started.

Wanted to hear members' exercise/workout routines, and what benefit they've seen...

I'm very lucky, in that my physique is naturally athletic - back when I was an irresponsible youngster I could eat fast food all the time and never put on weight etc... with virtually no exercise, besides clubbing and sex I guess.

Nowadays, since I'm older and a lot more conscious of my well-being, and especially since we went into lockdown, I've been exercising regularly and it's had such a positive effect on my life.

- I do regular bike rides, usually with the gears on the higher settings to give my legs a proper workout.
- I lift weights at home, working all the major muscles.
- I also incorporate some yoga-style stretches into my weights routine.
- Plus I use resistance bands for various strenghtening/stretching exercises.

Additionally I have a yoga block and massage balls of varying sizes for self massage before and after my routines.

After a recent break up I went full-on with the weights, and packed on a bit of weight with the aid of protein shakes and a change to my diet. This helped a lot with getting over the split and feeling good about myself, especially with regard to body confidence.

If I'm short on time, I just do this seven-minute abs workout (never manage to do it without laughing!) --> External Link/Members Only

All of this has been very useful in boosting my general outlook and my self-esteem. I'm not always as consistent as I would like to be, but when I manage to do everything regularly there's a distinct shift in my mood and energy. Sleep is often deeper/more satisfying as well.

Interested to hear what other members get up to....

Well ... you are young and in your prime. I am old and well past it.

But curiously enough I exercise more now than I ever did. And I know a lot about the subject because I was involved in promoting exercise 45 years ago and learnt a lot about it.

I live in a city full of hills with lots of green spaces. I spend at least 3 hours each week walking up and down those hills and through those green spaces.

Twice a week I do a set of 5 exercises which under 15 minutes, including press-ups and crunches etc. And twice a week I also do a very simple series that take no more than 32 seconds, and are based on the Dynamic Tension concept of Charles Atlas.

It all works very well.

Gym, 4+ times a week, plus cycling and some gentle jogging on occasion.
I'd recommend folks see a PT if your trying to get fit.....take a pen and paper and make notes.... you'd be amazed the amount of people that don't record what they're doing  :hi:

Used to go to the gym 3 times a week. Then lockdown happened so cancelled gym membership. Haven't been back since. Will start going again when things get back to full normality. ( if it ever gets back to full normality) God knows it will be a struggle to get back to anywhere near to my previous fitness level after 18+ months  :scare:

I pretty much do what you do. Apart from bike rides only into transport with an engine.

I'm probably classed as skinny, trying to bulk up but really struggling to make any gains. I've not worked out for about 3 weeks as I've had a cold and felt rough.

I go for walks every other day. They are sometimes about 2 miles long, but often less. I have not had a real climb for a while. I've climbed several Munros in the past, but prefer more level walks these days. Its much easier if you do Munros from your armchair.  :)

These guys climb Munros regularly and they are not spring chickens.

14 Steps down to my home office in the morning.
50 or so steps to the kitchen, living room, toilet, garden throughout the day.
60 right hand reps (is that the term) as I sip on my favourite tipple whilst half watching TV and posting drivel on here.
14 Steps back to bed.
Repeat x5.
Weekends - pretty much the same although I get a lie in and go to bed later.

Edit: How could I forget my compulsive wanking disorder. Each wank is equivalent to a mile run, is that right? So averaging a dozen miles a week wanking x 2 cos it takes twice as long since my glasses keep slipping down my nose.

I love junk food. I think I just abnormally high metabolism. I'm guessing it's the same for you. I think switching to brown pasta and rice might be a good step even if it tastes worse. I know I'm never going to look like an 80s action movie star, but I think Edward Norton in American History X or Fred Sereiux is achievable. I think Jason Statham is the impossible ideal.

hate to break it to you, but this current level of corna is likely to be stable or get worse, in the next few months, it might taper down long term, as the virus moves its way through the population and we gain natural immunity (stronger than vaccine, but still get vaccinated) so the survivors dont get as badly ill on average.

Even after recently re-opening the gym said there would be no shower facilities or even changing room facilities so you would have to turn up already in your gym gear so this has already put me off as I used to go straight from work , get changed, shower aftwards, + having to clean down all the equipment before/ after use  (fully understandable) so just seems so much hassle now. I try and walk more and cut down using my car where possible  and I will have to dust down my bike and start using that again . Sorry but we will never have natural immunity to it no more than our bodies have an immunity to prevent us catching a cold or flu. We might always need a regular vaccination against it especially as we get older .  :scare:

I walk to work which is a round trip of just over 4 miles a day. I enjoy lusting after the milfs as I walk on my route near a school.

I cycle 20 miles twice a week and go to the gym twice a week where I concentrate on weights. I don’t do this to get ripped, I don’t want that. I do it because I was told by a PT that it’s the best exercise for a guy in their mid 50’s because it helps offset age-related muscle loss and helps replenish my testosterone. That’s why at 55 I’m still as horny as I was at 25!

I subscribe to the use it or lose it theory, keep the mind and body active or lose what you once had. Having recently lost my dad who lived a sedentary lifestyle post retirement, it was sad to see how he declined. I want to grow old disgracefully and keeping fit and healthy helps that. Dad would be so proud!

Ive always ate whatever i wanted and not got fat but the enforced inactivity of lockdown and then covid related redundancy earlier this year meant my weight was nocking on 100kg and while still not excessively fat ive felt quite lacking in energy and like i was maybe symptomatic of type 2 diabetes. So started working out at home for 2 hours a day and a 20 minute run every morning but then i strained my back at the same time i started working again , currently back ok again but not working out but doing the odd run, weight sub 100kg and doing physical work which i think keeps a lid on preventing things spiraling downwards too rapidly. Pretty stable at present.

I feel your pain man! I neglected to mention that I ended up losing half a stone after putting some weight on during my weightlifting phase a couple months ago. Gave up for a bit as it was so disheartening. My mate is a former PT and he basically said you’ve got to accept that you’ll be eating A LOT and it will be boring/monotonous - but if you really want to bulk up, it’s the only way.

I was eating so much but it wasn’t enough.

MyFitnessPal is great for calorie counting all your meals, setting targets etc and it helps to figure out how much you really need to eat to achieve your ideal weight. But then it’s also a case of working the muscle groups properly.

It’s a lot of work and I lost motivation after finding I’d lost weight but I might try again sometime.

To bulk up you really have to look at boosting your intake of calories/proteins/healthy fats/carsb etc... It's not as simple as just lifting weights. Eating six meals a day is crucial to building muscle mass and you have to ensure you're getting enough calories. I have a high metabolism but I thought smashing a massive breakfast, lunch and dinner would be enough to get bigger. It wasn't!

I find this channel really useful for exercise routines and there's some dietary advice on there too --> External Link/Members Only

Just use the search function for whatever topic you're keen to learn more about, most things are covered on there.

Personally, I mix it up. In an arms session for instance, I do three reps each of three different exercises: arm curls, over the shoulder curls and one to build my shoulder blades.

I usually start on a low weight on the first round, doing more reps (say 15) get the body used to the motion without too much effort - good way to warm up. Then I'll switch to a very high weight with lower reps (say 8) and the last round is medium weight at around 10-12 reps. I can't remember the name of this technique but it's highly recommended for bulking up. Lighter weight/more reps is good for muscle memory/warming up, heavier weight/less reps good for strengthening muscle... and that leaves the medium weight/reps, which should be easier by the time you finish your round.

Hope that makes sense. I saw a video that explains it a bit better than that but can't seem to find it. If I do, I'll PM you.

Depends what your goal is. Are you bulking for muscle gain and aesthetics or for strength gains?

If your goals are strength focussed then you would be best looking at a lower reps. 5x5 is good for that.

If your goal is for hypertrophy/muscle gain then you want to aim for more reps. Around 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps.

Definitely bulking up for muscle gain. I am very superficial :)

I'm a skinny fucker. Some might even say I have mild body morphyia. I don't feel comfortable wearing t-shirts in hot weather due to my skinny arms.

Yet, I'm broad shouldered and feel with the right routine I could carry a more muscular physique quite well.

I agree with JPin that calorie intake has to be increased but it's not easy when you're not used to scrutinising every food you eat.

Some trainers advocate a "dirty calorie" diet comprising of all types of shit junk food to gain mass and THEN trim down from there but I feel a little uneasy about going down that route.

My body sounds exactly the same. I definitely look masculine due to broad shoulders, but couldn't pass for being athletic even a swimmer.

I read somewhere it doesn't matter if you eat too many calories and do it dirty you are never going to be fat which sounds right. So pointless bulking then cutting, I'm going to just bulk and work out at the same time. No rest period of cutting calories. What I will say is avoid fizzy drinks due to sugar even sweeteners have been linked to shortening lifespan. Cut down on sweets and chocolates, really bad for teeth. I'm a chocoholic. Maybe cut down on coffee if you drink it, can cause diarrhea.

I would also figure out your ideal weight I did it by looking at celebrities of a certain build and figuring nout what's viable. Bear in mind Jason Statham weighs over 13 stone. Brad Pitt in Troy over 15. My goal is to weigh just over 12.

You might be right. Not sure I could ever get fat but....it is possible to be "skinny fat". If I indulge in a few beers a week and start munching crisps again then on my slim frame I can still develop a paunch (which I detest). Luckily, if I cut the shit food out then I can get back to normal.

I'm fortunate in that fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolates etc have never been things I am addicted to. I enjoy them occasionally but switched to water many years ago and don't miss the pop.

I'm not a foodie which I think infuriates some of the people who know me. Food is fuel for me. I prefer it to look nice and taste nice but I don't really get excited about "complexities of flavours" etc

Since lockdown, I have probably been on the longest run of sustained exercise since I was probably 18. Though I am skinny I was beginning to feel my body felt "soft" but I have toned up now and am trying hard to bulk up.

Yeah. Does make me chuckle when some beast puts their 20 stone of muscle down to eating 6 meals a day and going for daily walks at 6am.

I don't give a toss what PEDs they're chucking down their necks - it's their body and choice after all. But, when they're constantly selling and promoting exercise programmes, training equipment, workout clothing, an Instagram profile and vitamins/supplements it becomes questionable and morally bankrupt.

I’ve trained or worked out pretty much all of my adult life. I can honestly say I’ve never enjoyed it but I just fell it’s something I have to do. I started out years ago in old style proper body building gyms. Actually it was in the forces I first started training but that was mainly for infantry fitness. I then got the gym bug and like I said it was proper old school body building gyms. They were the sort of places you knew everyone. You didn’t have to lock your kit away in the changing rooms. No heating and ancient equipment and weights. Some of the guys competed and the whole gym would go and support them. Nowadays I go to my local everlast fitness. It’s a totally different atmosphere but I can walk there so it’s dead handy.

I run three times a week for 4.5km. Seems a random distance but it takes me to a pretty spot by the river where I have a one minute break and then run home. I started doing C25K years ago and that worked really well for me. Not interested in going to 10km though, just feels like that is too much time out the day! I think running for 25 minutes 3 times a week is enough to get the heart rate up.

I have resistance bands which I use pretty much every day. I prefer them to free weights. I improvise with the exercises I do and find I get aches where I use underused muscles which is great.

A nearby park has an out door gym and I do assisted pullups. Still unable to do unassisted pullups!

I am not an expert on muscle groups, my goal is to exercise until I ache and the resistance bands do that. There are resistance bands and resistance loops, handy to have both but I use the bands more. Lidl had a set of 2 bands and 2 loops for just £5 or £6 which is a bargain but it was a "middle of LIDL" item so you will have to keep an eye out for them.

I noticed when I started doing assisted pullups my back felt really bulked up if I touched it. Pull ups are great for whole upper body.

The other thing I've tried to do but not got into is yoga. I'm too self conscious to go to a class and have tried videos but find it boring. Once I just did a 20 minute session and it felt like it went on forever. I think it is something you need to have a good few goes at to get the benefits but I have never been assed to.

No but I need to look into that. I think you can even use resistance loops to do it somehow but need to find a "How to" guide. There is a park near me and there is an assisted pull up machine there which is great and I always use it if I walk past it and it's free. It seems to be the most popular piece of equipment so is often used. More annoyingly sometime people just hang out and lean against the machine so people can't use it which fucks me off. So would be good to have something at home. Just doing 50 a day would do wonders I think.

Fuck yes!
I’ve always been very active.
Mostly boxing training with a bit of  running, cycling, climbing as many Monroes as possible, badminton dabbled in karate … anything really that gets my heart pumping fast..
Never been big into weights, mostly just done callisthenics, even then I rarely did pull ups, a lot of dips, push ups and planking.
Boxing was my first love, although I haven’t competed since my uni days back in the 90’s where my ability was kindly described as “mediocre “ and I have the nose to prove it!
I fucking love it though. Not just sparring, but bag work , pad work and a bit of medicine ball/sandbag work thrown in. Even just  getting the tunes pumping and going for 12 X 2 min rounds at home with my heavy bag till every pore in  my body is pouring out sweat gives me such a lift.
Unfortunately, with my 50’s on the horizon my body is showing signs of wear (elbows  shoulders knees) and just when one niggle sorts itself, an other fucking appears.
On the other hand,I still have the same waist  size I had when I was in my early 20’s, although not 21 when I was actually “competing “, despite never really watching what I eat.
Most importantly though, I also notice a huge dip in my mood if I don’t get the heart pumping for a few days so god knows what my mental state would be without it  :unknown:

Mainly just go to the gym and lift weights 3-5 times a week depending on my schedule/how I feel although gotta admit I've been slacking past few months. Mostly stick to heavy compound movements tbh. Barbell squats, deadlifts, rows , weighted chin ups and dips, Overhead press etc.

I used to be obsessed with bodybuilding and getting big and shredded, counting calories/protein intake everyday but now I can't be asked too much work. Rather just focus on getting stronger whilst maintaining a decent physique and having a half decent diet. I'm in fairly good shape and people can tell I train although I've been on and off at the gym for a few years now.

I can't go too long without some type of exercise otherwise I feel like complete crap/sluggish physically and mentally. having a good workout definitely helps me feel better due to the pump and endorphins realised.

Also trying to get back into boxing/sparring. Used to do it couple years ago although the conditioning is very hard it's a good way to keep fit and learn self defence. Plan to do a charity fight next year hopefully.

Sounds like A UKP night out coming up!
How do you guys know each other and why are you here?
Errr we just met tonight and decided to come here and cheer on a random stranger.

If you get the chance though, grab it with both hands and give it everything! It’s such a buzz.

Haha can imagine that would be epic

But yeah my younger brother recently done a white collar boxing charity bout, he drew but still thought he did well for someone who started as a complete beginner to only 8 weeks training for the fight.

It inspired me to give it a go, a couple of my mates are up for it too. Will get back to training at a boxing gym then sign up next year.

Weights, walking and cycling. I probably drink too much but I enjoy the social chit chat with work colleagues at lunchtimes and sometimes after work.

Used to swim, cycle and ramble.
Now just walk the dog,  walk with my other half or by myself.

I have a few health issues.
