The new travel rules at a glance...

Traffic light system radically redrawn into simple go/no-go system
Almost all existing amber list countries become ‘go’ destinations
Number of red, or no-go, destinations slashed in half
Double-jabbed travellers no longer need to take a PCR test after returning from ‘go’ or green country – only cheaper lateral flow
So-called pre-departure tests, taken 72 hours before someone flies home, likely to be scrapped
Tougher rules for unvaccinated – they have to isolate after returning from abroad and take two PCR tests on day two and day eight
Hotel quarantine remains for remaining red list countries, even for double-jabbed Britons

Can’t wait for these to be confirmed.
Don’t want to be pissing about before and during holidays
Can imagine trying to get The correct test and turning up at an airport to be told you did it wrong.
Mate was in France a few weeks ago and got sting for £500 for a bunch of tests he didn’t have a clue about.

ive got mixed views on it
on the one hand if it reduces the risk of me getting stuck in a hotel for 10-14 days at great cost, then thats good.
theres also a moral bind if you suspected you had covid, would you decide to get tested and risk upto 2k on hotel, or do you not test, and risk spreading something?

and on the other hand being on a plane/airport with a bunch of untested people for hours doesnt sound great, given our current infection level, then theres a very good chance of infected person/people on the flight.

also i dont know what the cost difference and accuracy difference there is with lateral vs pcr and is it actually worth that difference

Great I'm off on holiday tomorrow so not soon enough, the paperwork is a bit of a ballache to be honest and poorly thought out as you'd expect from civil servants.
The locator forms want to make you smash someones face in,should be worth it when I'm in the sun though.

So if you have a double jab it’s ok to travel around if infected. Wonderful...

I give it six weeks max til they tinker with and fiddle about with this latest iteration of restrictions.

I always thought is strange when the travel industry and some media complained that the traffic light system was "too complicated". Red, amber or green! what is complicated with that? also how difficult was it to understand that we (england) have requirements but the country being visited have there own requirements and that they might be different to ours.
Not complicated at all. Ok the paperwork/forms aren't the best but that could have been improved.

Now, whilst the changes help me personally in my travel plans, I can see covid becoming such an issue again this winter that some substantial restrictions will be introduced/re-introduced.

Your mate should have researched the requirements before he went and kept an eye out for any changes while he was there.

Not you. A simple test is still required for everyone but grumpy people take longer, so back of the queue!

I came back from Greece a while back.  The system is clearly not fit for purpose and did not work properly.  Getting the PCR was both expensive and time consuming as was the day 2 and 8 tests.
The thing that struck me was the sheer number of people coming through customs and how impossible it would have been to monitor anyone who was not self isolating.  I had a girl phone me and asked if I was self isolating and said ‘someone may come to check up on you’.  Nobody did neither did they call again.

The fear factor works for some people.  There were rumours from someone down the road that they came to their house to check they were self isolating.  It spreads fear as people talk to one another.  I knew they wouldn’t come to check up on me as there must have been around 500-750 people that passed through customs in the hour I was there.

Regarding these new rules, the government will bend them again once winter comes along and the numbers possibly rise again.  No ways I’d even contemplate planning a journey to another long distance country knowing that the rules could change in the time I was there.

Travel firms could have made the whole process a lot less hassle by organising it for customers... Dunno maybe they have been?
