To ignore the warnings two years ago that vaccine production would exceed the world's production of ampoule / vial glass.
NHS England cancelled yesterday for the foreseeable future ALL non—emergency blood tests due to lack of sample vials

but why is that the fault of the nhs? they are customers not producers.

and if the situation was so acute 2 years ago the billions of extra vials required following the onslaught of covid would have meant that the situation would have been the control of the NHS

Failure to plan purchases. Failure to warn this was a problem until it was too late.
It was predicted about two years ago and ignored

If warnings had been issued, rationing could have been used.
There's a serious risk of running out

Can’t buy a replacement double glazed window panel, glass in a worldwide short supply, suppose it’s a brexit thing? Not. Probably due to the world being closed for 18 months, everything in short supply, all building materials, steel, plastic etc.
Suppose the government will get the blame again??

fair enough, the nhs procurement doesnt have much of a reputation, but its still as much the fault of the manufacturers, dont imagine producing vials or increasing production is any more difficult than making elastoplasts

fair enough, but its hardly unreasonable to expect that makers of vials might have ramped up production, ?

Wrong type of vials - the glass ones for the vaccines are not the same as the predominantly plastic ones used for blood tests. I imagine there's a bunch of reasons why the supply is not good enough but it isn't a bad thing to get the NHS to look at the huge number of inappropriate blood tests they do

I believe the manufacturer, Becton, makes them in Germany. This may explain the supply issues.

Offline Brummie999

Not heard of any production issues in Germany recently so not sure why country of manufacture is a factor.

They manufacture in Plymouth and are increasing UK production capacity by 20%

Apparently some of these shortages are because companies cancelled orders a year ago and didn't place new orders until early this year as some of them expected the recovery to take longer.  At least that's the reason some of the car manufacturers in the US have put their factories on reduced hours because there's a global shortage of silicon chips. I think silicon chips are mostly produced in automated plants, so could have continued operating during lockdowns.

its is not the fault of the NHS and as this warning came before the needs created by the covid vaccine the problem was going to happen whatever the NHS did 2 years ago....the only way they could have avoided the issue was by buying more but if there was a manufacturing shortage how could they?

I'm not sure what that has to do with the topic of blood tube supply chain issues but are you suggesting they're paid too much?

Offline mradventures

tbf a nhs contract for something like that should be a fairly stable order quanity over time, so its odd that we are in this mess :(

I've been expecting a blood test cancelled, but so far despite an announcement by the surgery I have not been contacted. I'm not on death's door  :unknown:

Isn’t it yesterday’s news now though… The supply chain has apparently ramped up production.

The ‘latest NHS fuck up is, according to the news today, a woke lessons blog on their website telling white people to feel embarrassed over ‘white privilege …

Turned up blood sample take. Apparently because my tests were requested by a GP they can go ahead. I am not an emergency, it's something ongoing won't kill me but useful to know.

Latest is flu vaccine supplies, but supply chains seem to be a hot issue at the moment.

I’m not sure people will be interested in having the flu jab or the booster jab,how many more jabs can you keep getting,I’m not having flu one this year.
