Listening on radio about this diabetes crisis costing the NHS a fortune =£1.19 billion spent on prescriptions. The GP said it’s the type 2 one which is the lifestyle type,eating/no exercise.Kids these days don’t do things like in the 1970s in my opinion like use parks as much, eat takeaways more.I try to exercise by walking regularly, can’t run.Seems to me about being more aware of your lifestyle unless you’re type 1,McDonald’s is packed everyday I walk past it in my town.

I can't help wondering if part of the reason western European populations have faired so poorly against covid is because we're increasingly sedentary, overfat and have Hb1ACs north of 48. I was reading research papers on the link between poor blood sugar control and covid pathology (literally no pictures of adults 'with no underlying conditions' I saw in papers were absent a strong double chin)

You can be metabolically 'ok-ish' while being overweight if you can keep up about 3 hours of walking dispersed across the week and don't subsist off beige food.

Government over the last couple of years has been pressuring industry to make crap food come in smaller portions, I've seen these 99cal mars/twix/snickers bars going for not much less than the price of what counts as a full size one these days. There's plans to legislate for how many calories can be in a single home cook pizza and things like the sugar tax means that Tesco put the price of a 500ml bottle of coke up to 1.40 from 1.10....and then put the diet sugar free options up to the same price so where prey tell is the incentive for the 'healthier' choice.

All legislation does is make more money for the suppliers making things smaller or a little more expensive, then the supermarkets sell more of the cheap stuff, 2 litre bottles of Lemonade are 17p in Lidl. Same price as water.

If Mc,ds is always busy, you can probably double the sales from deliveries in cities, very few cook fresh healthy meals anymore, ready meals and delivery have taken over, some never leave the house, get everything delivered.

Kids never get the chance to build an immune system, if they do get out as soon as they touch anything out come the wet wipes, even pre covid, that is where all the allergies and breathing problems come from, many of us lived through coal fires, leaded petrol, smog and trucks, buses and taxis that pumped out diesel particles and burnt oil for fun. When was the last time you topped up the oil on your car?
Pollution might be measured now but you cannot believe it is worse now than when coal fires pumped out of every chimney and vehicles had no filters even if there is now more of them.

All these Dpf filters are a con, what do you think they do when the regenerate? Break down the particles they catch, burn them with heat and pump them out of the exhaust is what they do. It all goes out one way or another. If it does not, you do not drive enough to generate the required heat, it blocks and you get a big bill.

Health is a personal choice, no legislation will change it, nor what people eat and while the NHS is free it will be abused.

All we see now is Just Eat/Deliveroo cyclists outside McDonald’s or walking around with the back packs going to another home to drop off fast food.I watched Dispatches on More4 about this new gig economy earning below minimum wage, like the amazon drivers everywhere now,it’s a new world since covid.People sitting indoors food delivery or parcels delivered.

These come in female versions too. You have to use search term "plus size" though, not "fat".....

Look up a guy called Dr Jason Fung. He believes the cure to the rising levels of diabetics is easy, and it's through fasting. You see there is no profit for big pharma in a healthy population. We're told to eat 5 fruits a day and have 3 meals minimum a day and also snack in-between. This coupled with our consumption of convenience, fast & highly processed foods is what's causing obesity & diabetes. By constantly eating we cause our insulin levels to spike more frequently which in turn causes insulin resistance and over time this inevitably causes diabetes. People with early stages of diabetes can reverse it through fasting and for healthy people fasting acts as a preventative. In fact there have been cases of long term suffers who cured diabetes through fasting but they did so under medical supervision. So the crisis could be solved by altering the nations eating habits but that means less money for big business.

The thing is an overweight sedentary person won't fast will they  :unknown: They're overweight for a reason or combination of reasons

The Govt recommend eating the 5 portions of frest fruit / veg a day but i'm not sure they recommend a minimum of 3 meals and snacking in-between  :unknown:

True BR, but if they want to change their state they will need to change their ways, otherwise the downward spiral unfortunately continues. They can't expect to follow the same lifestyle which has led them to obesity and expect that they'll miraculously be cured.

Thats right. What I meant was the culture here in the west is to eat Breakfast/Dinner/Lunch/Snacks in-between.....which can be fine, but the problem is most of the food we're eating is highly processed food which has a high glycaemic index. Most fruits also contain high fructose content which Dr Fung argues doesn't help the cause so he suggests eating less fruit.

Dr Fung has many informative videos online but I've just picked one if you'd like to watch it. He can explain it far better than me.

Junk food. How much money do the political parties and universities get from Big Agri? Big Sugar? Big Food? You go into a supermarket and try and buy something without sugar in it? Anything pre-packed is loaded with it. Even sodding roast chicken.

The State doesn't give a fuck about this. In fact, the political parties like it because chronic conditions which require non stop treatment are customers for life for their other paymasters, Big Pharma.

I know a couple of people who had Type 2 diabetes.

One was over 20 stone and severely depressed. He took up walking/hiking and now weighs about 11 stone, fit as a fiddle and has reversed his diabetes.

The other person was not as heavy, but was definitely a sedantry, borderline stoner/gamer wth severe mental health issues. The thing that saved him was getting a dog that required a lot of walking. He's now prediabetic as well.

The guy now walks the dog religiously three times a day everyday, even if it's pissing down with rain or snowing and is much more socialble and positive in his mindset.

It can be done, but the truth is many people are far too lazy, irresponsible and self entitled to bother

It gives great motivation to hear about things like that Chorley.

Pre-pandemic our local GP had Saturday walks for the local community whereby you would all walk together for a couple of miles. Principal reason was community spirit with the added benefit of weight loss.   Food definitely has a big part to play in Diabetes.   I have a long list of people in my family with diabetes and therefore decided the best way to avoid it was to not buy anything with sugar in it.  If you don't have sugary drinks or cakes in your house, the less you can be bothered to go out and get it.

This may sound dumb but for me personally, weather has a big part to play.  In warmer climates, I sweat out buckets, eat mostly salads and a bit of fish for meals.  It's easier to lack the motivation in colder climates for exercise even though these days I try to do workouts indoors if I don't go out.

I do a fair bit of walking: did nearly 24000 steps yesterday - I had to back off the running as I had an injury that floored me for nearly 3 weeks.
I'd also advocate strength training ultising a barbell programme like Starting Strength, Stronglifts 5x5, or Greyskull Linear Progression and then do some form of cardio afterwards
I use an Assault Bike which is as unpleasant as it sounds even though its only for 10 minutes !  :scare: :D
I'm literally the least athletic dad bod you'll ever meet but even I am slowly getting stronger, fitter losing weight and putting on lean muscle slowly but surely .

Part of the problem is that sugar used to be fairly expensive however now that we get it from sugar beet which is grown in the UK the price has plummeted and it's actually used in ever increasing amounts as a cheap "filler"
Combine that with the fact it's addictive and packing into a product makes people want to go back and buy it again to get their drug fix, the human body is designed to crave high fat / sugar food as we needed it 1000's of years ago to tide us over the lean periods or through the winter etc.

You are right that if you look on most food labels you will be staggered to see what is added and I often wonder what purpose most of the added ingredients actually have  :unknown:

I'm not sold on the idea of some grand conspiracy, whether it's big pharma, food mfrs or even cultural iatrogenesis.

I cannot remember a time when I was not hearing how the evil food manufacturers make and sell addictive cheap to make high profit foods.

Don't really need Dr Fung who frankly sounds to me like a bit of a crackpot on the make - Youtube is full of snake oil "experts".

Good old mainstream media has been banging the gong for eating well and exercising for years and years.

I eat almost no processed foods (I count dairy as processed which is about the only processed food I eat - oh plus bread), and I run every day.

Didn't need no Dr Fungus to learn about this - I just read the mainstream media.

Course it depends how you define "processed". For example I eat porridge made with oats that have been crushed and then packaged. Ditto a spoonful of crushed mixed seeds that I add in. And I add defrosted berries that were harvested and frozen. All a kind of processing.

We all benefit hugely from the food manufacturing and distribution industry that allows me to buy all the fruit and veg and fish and dairy and bread and spices etc that I eat in one trip to a supermarket.

One hour of reasonably brisk walking every day will most likely prevent you from getting type two diabetes - the key is to do it every day without slacking off.

See there's lots in news today saying if your waist is bigger than it was when you were aged 21 you're more likely to get diabetes.

Think I'm just about okay but my feeling is that 80% of people I know are well fucked.

What's modern fruit?

compare an apple or strawberry now, and those from 30 years ago, and frankly all they have in common is the name, size , sugar content no comparison, even worse are melons. you think you are doing yourself good guzzling fruit, its a big mistake, in men its transformed almost instantly into stomach fat. if you want the health benefits of fruit, squeeze a lemon into a glass, dilute with water, sorted.

It's comical you believe you can make the comparison between what you taste now and what you remember tasting 30 years ago. If that's the best you have then you have nothing.

Right so i've just Googled - "does fruit now contain more sugar" and got this top result -

Generally, however, fruit tends to contain less sugar than sweetened foods. Almost everyone, including people with diabetes, could benefit from eating more fruit . This is due to the combination of vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytochemicals, and water it provides. Fruit contains two types of sugar: fructose and glucose

I eat stuff that’s been frozen quite often when there’s less time or fresh stuff availability though I’m not so keen on it. Better frozen food than junk food.

I do think the quality of some fruit and veg in the supermarkets may have gone down with various delivery supply factors.

I did a quick Google and found “ Certain brands of frozen blueberries are sweetened with added sugar, which increases their calorie counts and decreases their nutritional values. One cup of fresh blueberries contains 14.7 grams of natural sugars, while the same amount of frozen, sweetened blueberries contains 45.4 grams of sugar, most of it in the form of added sugar.” which would appear to contradict Mr Loman’s claim — but I expect there’s equally stuff somewhere to support his view.

If you believe everything in the food fad claims you’d end up eating nothing at all.

One of the closest I’ve seen to ‘consensus’ is the so-called Mediterranean diet. Apart from that I’d probably say eat what you reckon is good for you and don’t eat stuff that’s bad for you. Pussy for instance is probably good for you.

Modern intensive farming methods means there just isn't the same amount of nutrients in the soil. Modern day fruit and veg is about 50% less nutritious than it was 40+ years ago.
Beyond that, most fruit contains more sugar (and calories) than you'd imagine. Not really a problem if you stick to 5-a-day but folks who decide to go "10 times healthier" by blitzing up loads of fruit into a few smoothies every day are absolutely smashing to pieces the healthy target of 30g of sugar a day. One banana has about 10g of sugar for instance.

Absolute rubbish. If anything modern strawberries are less sweet because they're picked before they've fully ripened. As for apples, a hundred or more years ago there were varieties just as sweet as those sold now. Cox, Charles Ross, Beauty of Bath (used for sweet red cider) just to name a few
