As a big fan of Rugby League ( and Union) it's disappointing to hear that the tournament due to be staged in this country in October will be in jeapody due to the withdrawal of Australia ( the holders and favourites to win the tournament and New Zealand ) They say it it due to the ongoing Covid pandemic but the real reason is all due to the Australian Rugby League clubs ( NRL) who think their league is the be all and end all of world rugby. They are more worried about the tournament impacting on their pre season training for 2022 and getting their star players injured.  Non of the NRL players were asked their opinion on this, many if not all the players selected would have been quite happy to come over and play with all the covid protocols in place. A decision whether to postpone the tournament until next year , scrap it altogether or play it without these 2 nations. Personally I would go ahead with out them and invite 2 other countries who just failed to qualify ( USA and Spain). The New Zealand Rugby Union team are quite prepared  to play in this country in the Autumn but not the Rugby league team. No wonder international Rugby League will never be able to compete with International Rugby Union. Rugby league was a professional sport long before Union but it seems to be run by amateurs with their own self interests at the forefront.  :dash:

I too am a fan and the game is on its arse at the moment at least in this country. Those running the game seem to have no idea how best to promote the sport to get people watch ing on tv or attending games. Covid has been a huge issue and they havent managed to get to grips with it. Calling off games left, right and centre. As for the world cup I think it's really sad the Aussies and New Zealand arent taking part regardless of the reasons/excuses. It devalues the tournament and if it goes ahead without them, whoever wins it wont have the same credit they would get if those two were playing. Personally I think it will be better to be postponed. The Aussies and New Zealand also draw in bigger crowds when taking part.

They say they're pulling out because of the Covid pandemic, but they have sent competitors to the Olympics, some other agenda methinks,

It's the NRL clubs, they do not want the world Cup interferring with there season year year.  They have a point so far but it's down to quarantine conditions when the players return to Oz or NZ, plus any injury worries. The Aussies don't really rate internationals above there domestic games. I think all NRL based players will have pressure put on them not to play for other Pacific rim counties like Tonga.

I think given the poor state the game now finds itself incoming put of the pandemic, add in crowds are down etc.I think postponement or cancellation is the only viable option, disappointing but we are going to struggle to get crowds into some of the bigger stadiums. Playing games outside the heartland areas is not going to work now for sure. Its asking to much of fans from heartland areas that make up a huge percentage of crowds to pay to travel to far flung areas of the UK.

The game is truly in a massive hole at the moment, it's about survival and many hard decisions will need to be taken in a sport that has a history of poor administration.

Even the State of Origin games mean more to the Australians than internationals or the World cup

Well today its been postponed until 2022. Sad but it would have been a poor competition without Australia and NZ.

A shame but it just goes to show that the NRL call the shots in World Rugby league. I think the tournament should have gone ahead without them .

Another postponement

Maybe for the best we can now concentrate our minds on the state of our domestic game and the way forward.

Out of interest, how does league differ from union, is it a class thing?

I thought league was exclusively northern, union was more south?

Union is the more skills based, league is players running into each other 5 times then kicking it.
There's far too many rule differences to explain and yes there is a north south divide generally.

Nonsense. League is just as skilled as Union, probably more so. I follow both sports but prefer League to Union. In Union there are too many penalties handed out ( especially for constant ruck infringements) and in modern union there is too much kicking the ball back to the opposition.  Rugby league is all about maintaining possession whereas Union is all about gaining territory.  Union had it's origins in Public Schools.  League does have it's origins in the North and has a more working class following. League has always led the way in innovation. 1st professional league, 1st World Cup, The rules of League are far simpler than Union that's why you get a more free flowing game. Union does have a more World wide following and international Rugby Union is far bigger than International Rugby League. Something League has always lagged behind compared to Union.

Sorry I knew I'd catch a league fan in my net with that.
It's interesting as for me there is litttle skill in league it's just players running into each other 5 times and then kicking it mostly.I watched GB play live once in OZ it was frankly awful I find no entertainment in people smashing into each other which was about all it was.
League fans however only ever see union as an endless stream of kicking.
I do think if league was more entertaining it would be more popular which plainly it isn't.

Rugby league is far more popular in Australia than Union but Union is far more popular in New Zealand .  As regards players running into one another I think your mistaking it for American football.  :hi:

No that's entertaining league is not.

American football is big blokes wearing ridiculous shoulder pads and helmets running into one another for about 5 minutes of action and 3 hours of standing about.

Union is mostly kicking the ball to your opponents and them kicking it back to you until eventually one of you kicks it into touch.

No that's entertaining .

Now the Lingerie bowl is entertaining.  I would pay to watch this. Only the Americans could come up with this

In union the fans get to handle the ball more then the players. .

Anyway the world cup is now postponed till 2022 so we can hopefully get all the countries on board. It also gives us time to  concentrate on getting the game sorted out while we can.

I had an opportunity to volunteer at the Rugby League World Cup so was disappointed to hear about the postponement ...hoped to be able to tag on some punting in the area  or better still meet someone there who was up for some fun.
