I've lived 5 mins walk from Stokes Croft (but far enough away for it to be quiet) for 10 years. I've never felt unsafe and never had a single altercation or whatever. Anywhere in central Bristol is really safe, I reckon - certainly in the areas where the majority of escorts base themselves.
Just got to add to the other positive comments on here.
Stokes Croft looks a bit rough around the edges if you're used to manicured lawns (hey, it was worse in the 80s), but it's a friendly and hassle free area in terms of personal safety. Never witnessed or heard of any bother there either, bar a break in at a store I know, so same experience as Zakk.
I've also worked in various cities all over the UK, North America and Europe. There's a few areas of Bristol that can be a little dodgy after dark - by which I mean you can get hold of things your pharmacist won't sell, or propositioned, although there's little of that any more. I've been out and about after dark in Bristol for the last 30+ years in various areas, both pissed up for leisure, and very sober for work, which has left me by myself at 3am on numerous occasions. There's not much to avoid, unless you intentionally go off-piste.
It's not Bath, where the worst thing you can bump into is a London based lawyer with one too many G'n'Ts on her breath. But unless you're a statue of a 17th century people trafficker, it's a generally very safe city, both in the day and in the early hours - as evidenced by the police crime stats for July this year - not even in the top 50:
External Link/Members OnlyI've felt WAY more unsafe in places like Newcastle on Tyne, Leeds, Moss Side (Manchester), Salford and even central Liverpool, where there's some abject poverty that feeds into crime. Some of those places the local ferals will nick your van AND your tools whilst you're up a ladder and inside a supposedly "secure" area (true story!).
