Whats with the truck/SUV mania sweeping the population. Seems like every 2nd car on the road is an SUV now.

I cant understand what the obsession is.  Higher ride height is nice, but they are expensive to buy, expensive to run , and hard to park.

what am i missing

Comfort versus speed/sporty looks and able to do and carry more things. Going off road is not a priority but it’s come in handy when I had to drive down a dirty unpaved path.

Not true. My suv is cheaper on fuel, tax and only slightly more expensive on insurance than my previous vehicle which was a mondeo. Also easier to park thanks to not being as long and having parking cameras.

My daily driver is an SUV I can fit bikes, gear, luggage a dog in it.I have a nice high driving position,it's a nice relaxing drive even with 500hp.I do live in the country though it would be pointless in a city which is where most sales are.

Yep, it seems like people are buying SUVs and EVs as the latest in fashion accessory to show off just like they do with the latest iPhone.

Many modern ‘suv’ type cars are derived from a standard car chassis with just a different body. Many of the parts are the same as the standard car so no more expensive to repair.

I think the suv craze is past it’s peak now and we’ll gradually start to see less on the roads over the next couple of years.

You are not wrong, assuming it is the pick up trucks we are talking about. Nissan, who also make the Mercedes have ceased manufacture or are very soon, Volkswagen have stopped production but say it will return in 2023, Mitsubishi are pulling out of the UK all together.

Did you know they are legally restricted to 60 mph on motorways? The new breed of speed cameras can pick them out, that could make them unpopular.

The only exception is the Isuzu D max, which is classed as a car, the others, all of them are classed as a van.

I've got an estate eco box as a daily, and a proper 4x4 scruffy old thing for doing the household chores, kayaking, putting the dog in, camping and green Laning. Etc.

If its a heavy pickup it might be restricted to 60mph on dual carriageways, but it's still allowed to do 70 on the motorway.

That is incorrect, they are class M1, which is the same as any other passenger car.

It’s to do with carrying passengers.

As far as the MOT is concerned they are considered class 4 same as a mini/Ford Focus etc

However and I believe this is a fact, all the owners are buying these to make up for their small manhood

M1 is passenger vehicles, but you really need to do your home work before replying, every single double cab pick up is over the weight to travel legally at 70 mph on the motorway and legally cannot travel in excess of 60 mph on any road, 50mph on some with national speed limits, except the Isuzu D max which is under the required weight limit.

You can download all you like, they are not classed as a passenger car when it comes to speed limits. They are classed the same as non car derived vans over the weight for 70 mph speed limits and you are liable to points for doing so.

You are wrong.
The speed limit for the vehicles you describe are as follows.

> Speed limit in built-up areas (such as towns and cities): 30mph – the same as a car
> Single carriageway speed limit (with the National Speed Limit sign): 50mph – 10mph less than a car
> Dual carriageway speed limit: 60mph – 10mph less than a car
> Motorway speed limit: 70mph – the same as a car

The simple basic guide is the MOT class, class IV (including American pickups up to 6500kg DGW Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg DGW) are classes the same as cars,  class VII (Goods vehicles between 3,001kg and 3,500kg DGW inclusive) are classes as commercial vehicles and are subject to the different speed limits on roads except motorways.

The lower motorway limit doesn't come into it until 7.5 tonne GVW. Since 1 August 1992 those vehicles have also been required to have speed limiters fitted.

Nerve touched ?

They are classified as passenger cars for the MOT is what I said.

I imagine they are no more than 2000kg when unladen. DGW is what it is legally maximum allowed to be when on the road. There is no way a Nissan Nivara (for example) weighs 3.5 tonnes unladen.
