COPS UNLEASH VICE DEN BLITZ; Swoop on brothels in flats.
POLICE swooped on sex-forsale flats and saunas in a crackdown on Scotland's vice industry.
The raids were part of a Strathclyde Police blitz on organised crime linked to prostitution.
Off icers wearing stab-proof vests raided five properties on Friday night which resulted in four arrests, cash being seized and a drugs find.
The Sunday Mail were invited by police to witness the raids after we exposed the surge in prostitutes operating brothels in private flats last month.
At 7pm officerswent into action after weeks of painstaking surveillance and intelligence gathering in Glasgow.
Operation Flight saw officers burst through the doors of the Venus Sauna in Sandyford Lane.
A simultaneous bust - Operation Balance - saw the St Enoch Club in Howard Street shut down.
Raids at addresses in Glasgow's Carnarvon Street, Lancefield Quay and Metropole Lane also took place.
At the Venus Sauna, a 59-year-old man was arrested for brothel-keeping.
Officers took a 47-year-old woman into custody at the St Enoch Club on simi lar charges and also seized a four-f igure sum of cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
A 30-year-old man was also arrested after police found him in possession of a quantity of drugs. Al l three are expected to appear at Glasgow SheriffCourt tomorrow.
At Lancefield Quay a woman from Thailand was taken into custody after she admitted she'd been in Scotland illegally for six years and worked as a prostitute.
Officers from the UK Border Agency were contacted late on Friday and arranged to travel from Manchester to interview the woman yesterday.
Two weeks ago we revealed that hundreds of private homes in Scotland had been turned into vice dens by more than 1000 prostitutes.
The increase is a direct result of police operations aimed at shutting down i l legal saunas and cleaning up dangerous red light areas.
Last night Superintendent David Donaldson said that almost half of the brothels in the west of Scotland are l inked to ser ious and organised crime.
He said: "There's been a significant drop in the number of women involved in street prostitution.
"But we've detected an increase in women operating from private flats in thriving residential areas.
"Often the men using these services have been drinking alcohol and go to the wrong door or approach women not involved in prostitution.
"This sort of activity blights local communities and is something we'll continue to tackle.
"We're also concerned for the wellbeing of women working in the sex trade because many of them are victims of crime."
He added: "We've found that 43 per cent of flats which operate as brothels have links to serious and organised crime.
"Although women are safer from attack if they work from a private proper ty they're st i l l at r isk of violence.
"Tonight we disrupted the activities of those involved in the sex trade and gained valuable intellegence.
"And we'll continue to disrupt their activities and seek to seize their assets under proceeds of crime laws wherever possible."
