Not sure if this is an old scam but i've just received a text on my mobile from a short code 622226 saying Paypal alert you have successfully sent a payment of £245.36 If this was not you please contact us at XYZ weblink

Immediately thought scam so didn't touch the link but logged into my Paypal account just to check there weren't any payments showing and no activity however with the new 2 step authentication they had to send me a code to my mobile.

The short code they used was 62226 so very similar to what the scammers are using

Just a coincidence. Change your password again to be on safe side. Your number will probably get a few scam texts going forward so might be worth changing that too

I have no idea what the point of PayPal is since eBay ditched it. It just seems to be an unnecessary tier to access funds in your main account(s). What would be the disadvantage of closing one's PayPal account?

PayPal have morphed into a consumer finance company after being ditched by ebay. New model is to offer interest free credit for up to 1year.

Very useful for sending small sums to individuals.  Supposed to be "friends and family" but works for anyone. All you need is their email address.

Otherwise you are messing with cheques or setting up bank transfers.

Can also buy on AliExpress.

I use PayPal all the time for online shopping, Wickes, B&Q, Screwfix, Argos to name a few all accept it. If I pay by card they have my card details, if I pay by PayPal they don't only PayPal have card details.

You can forward scam texts and calls to this number where they will be investigated.

Another paypal user her - good for paying friends etc (eg, I book a squash game and the other guy owes me £3.50, then he pays me on paypal - rare to carry change/cash these days!)

Also good for sending money to a "friend" overseas (friend being a big-titted exotic hottie who I've fucked multiple times).

Word of caution though - Paypal reveals your full name and email address to the recipient, so don't use it unless you are comfortable with that.

 also unlike a bank if you call them they sort any problems out very promptly.
