the vauxhall viva was the worst car i ever had ,drove up onto a kerb gently and the fan blade went through the radiator
my mechanic told me to get rid even though i had just bought it off his brother inlaw, moved onto an escort
little did i know, the first of many

Talk about poetic justice...... I had an old rust bucket Viva stolen from a carpark when I was doing jury service.
I couldn't believe it. Who would want to steal it??
Apparently at the time there was a practice of lads taking easy to steal old cars and taking them to a wreckers, who would pay £10, no questions asked.

And don't forget that was basically the same car as the Opel Manta

Not true, the Manta was their sporty Coupe, sort of Capri rival.

The Ascona was their version of the Cavalier, my dad had one in the late 70's.

I do like the E-Type but prices have been quite variable over the years, at one time about 25 -30 years ago prices were sky rocketing as people snapped them up as investments, heard of them selling for about 80K before the market crashed and you could then pick one up for about 10K.

I remember this though from James may cars of the people series 2 episode 1 where James and Damon hill both take an e-type and a Datsun 260Z around the track, the Datsun just wins  :scare:

This, but in RHD obvs.  Absolutely tragic. 1979 model.  Bought it for £500 as a non-runner, got it going and insured it for £1000.
Stuffed it 9 months later and bought a Dual 575 turntable, NAD amp and freakin' massive Celestion Speakers - much better VFM

It must have been a shock when the E Type first came out. It looked like a jet fighter compared to the other cars of the time. If you like vintage cars, like I do, this channel is worth a look.

Enzo Ferrari is famously quoted as saying that he thought the Jaguar E-type was the most beautiful car in the world

The Manta was simply a Cavalier Coupe with a different nose. It may have been marketed against the Capri, but the body and mechanicals were pure Mk1 Cavalier

My mate buys nothing but jaguars, he has recently bought a black sovereign for £1000. He knocked the guy down from £2000 because it had a diagnostic fault on. He fixed that in 30 mins, the earth wire had a bad connection on body work. Strange though all his jags have got to have the tan leather seats or he wont buy them.  :unknown:

Good luck.  A medium sized lottery win should be sufficient.

I guess its that nostalgic thing then, sometimes we forget the buggers refusing to start or the electrics just failing  :) I think I'm probably just spoilt now with new cars and almost nothing ever going wrong, even on things that historically you would say could be temperamental at best.

I still ponder over getting an original Escort Mexico with the 2.1 pinto lump and a nice fat cherry bomb exhaust, but you guys are right. I'd spend more time keeping it on the road and looking sharp than driving it.
Still, we can all dream.

Should a Mexico not have the 1.6 Kent in it ? Like all old fast fords they are silly money nowdays.

Mk1 Mexico ran the crossflow / Kent 1600.

Mk2 Mexico ran the Pinto 1600 version.

It should you are right, however I'd do a conversion and drop the 2 litre from the seventies in, assuming one could be found. Same with the exhaust, use a Cherry Bomb conversion that was all the rage back in the day.

My first and only car was a 1991 Blue Nissan Sunny which I got in 1998. 1.4ltr engine but a chunky bugger which was slow getting up hills. Cost £1,700 to buy and £1,000 to insure in the first year for third party fire and theft. My Dad bought the car and insured it for a year which really surprised me as my Dad was normally quite tight fisted. Insurance went down to c£350 a year after the first year.

Not much street cred but most my friends drove their parents' cars so having my own car was quite impressive.

I moved to London after Uni and realised I could get anywhere on the tube so sold the Nissan. Someone made a dent in it literally 2 weeks before I sold it and didn't leave a note. I asked my Dad to sell if for me and a couple travelled about 200 miles to buy it.
