About 4% of the population is ethnic, but if the adverts are to believed 90% of couples are mixed race.

Did you just pluck 4% out of the air?

According to the census data

Ethnicity facts and figures
Government data about the UK's different ethnic groups.

82% of people in England and Wales are white, and 18% belong to a black, Asian, mixed or other ethnic group (2021 Census data).

Saw it on another site, they were wrong, my point still stands though.

Fragrance ads, I mean who actually buys fragrance based on poncy ads …. Really?

You would think only beautiful people buy perfume judging by their adverts.

Sick of the Freemans advert with Sophie EB - they must have spent a fortune it seems to be on every 5 minutes

I remember when my Mother ran a Freemans catalogue 65 years ago; friends orderring stuff and she would collect money from them every week and pay it in to the post office

Not in the RNLI ad. All white rescuees and rescuers and all indigenous UK sounding voices. What is going on? Has the ad agency's lost touch with the vogue? No, I guess they reluctantly decided the ends justify the means.

A worthy cause but when watching a programme it's shown every commercial break. It looses it impact.

I guess they just need to cross sell some Range Rover customers over to these new style Jags - there will be three models - and job done.
One journalist said it is, it's not the opinion of the whole paper. Cross sell some Range Rover customers over to these new style Jags?! How? I know several Range Rover customers; they'd point and laugh. Plus, these are new cars, think how expensive they'll be apart from what they bloody look like!

Oh no I'm not: I'm British!  :D The point is though, adverts reflect the diversity of Peckham and not England/Britain/UK. Ethnic minorities aren't rich though, so why advertise at them?

British is a nationality not an ethnic background / group.

Which is what people said about New Defender and New Range Rover, both of which have been roaring successes for JLR. New Defender costs up to £120k before extras, Range Rover over £200K - in round numbers twice what they used to cost. So Gerry McGovern has pulled this trick before - radical redesign and doubling selling prices - very successfully.

That journalist is Andrew English who speaks for the Daily Telegraph rather more than you do for Range Rover owners.

Andrew English

One of Britain’s most respected motoring journalists, Andrew is a fount of knowledge about cars, road testing and all things four-wheeled. For many years the voice of The Daily Telegraph’s car pages and a judge of the European Car of the Year award.

Well, the conspiracy theory nutjobs have been making a meal out of that.

Certain people with hidden agendas have been using this statistic to fuel the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory, to "prove" that white people are being intentionally replaced by non-white immigrants through immigration and higher birth rates.

Of course if they were to engage a few brain cells they would realise how misleading this view is.

So, let's imagine there are 10,000 boys born in a year. Out of these, 150 are named Muhammad (in all their various spellings), 120 are named Nigel, 110 are named Oliver, 100 are named John and a huge variety of other names not getting past the 150 mark. So, even though Muhammad is the most popular name (i.e. 150), it would only represents 1.5% of all boys born that year. The remaining 98.5% of boys have a huge variety of other "white" names.

This shows that while Muhammad is the most common name, it doesn't mean that a majority of boys are named Muhammad. It just means that among the many names chosen, Muhammad happens to be the most frequent. This is a classic example of how statistics can be misinterpreted to support a misleading narrative.

Whilst years before nice white people would have preferred to name their boys with common names such as John, Noah, Mark, David, etc. Nowadays, people are more extravagant when naming their children and choose a wide variety of names.

Other spellings of the name are counted individually - so "Muhammad " stands separate from "Mohammed" However, the point made is hugely valid.

Not so much 'hate' but I found Sainsburys using the BFG in their Christmas adverts a bit bizarre.  Why?  Because the last BFG film came out over 8 years ago, and was a Box Office flop.  I thought maybe they were bringing out a sequel and the adverts were to tie in with it, but there aren't even any plans for a sequel!  You're using a film that wasn't even culturally relevant in 2016 and people have mostly forgotten about to advertise your wares in 2024?!

It is based on one of the world's best selling children's books of all time,  written in 1982.

It is about standing up to bullies and accepting other people who are different; very culturally relevant I would say.

I still don't see the point of using it in the advert though.

I'll add to that Roald Dahl was (and possibly still is) the highest earning dead person, with his estate earning even more than John Lennon and Michael Jackson. His books are still well-loved and known to children worldwide; his characters are more recognisable than say Julia Donaldson's.

Yeah, I know, but the ads are less to do with the book, and more related to the film-the Spielberg one from a decade ago, not the animated film from 1989-which didn't do big business, hence my point.  I'm pretty sure it's Mark Rylance doing the voice in the advert, who was the one who done the voice in 2016 for the film.  Surely you get something more current to push your products for Christmas?  What do I know though, I'm not an advertising executive-maybe adverts using a 8 year old film brought people to Sainsburys in their droves?   :unknown:

I think you are all missing the point here slightly, how recent it is is irrelevant,  its all about BIG he is the BFG Big Friendly Giant, he is instantly recognisable and that's the point, they are promoting their Big charitable contribution to making sure families don't go hungry this festive season.
They are saying they are Giants in the retail industry and they are being Big and Friendly.

I may not be right it's not unknown but that's how I read it, there is the original longer advert and then shortened versions which dilute the message a little and that's some of the issue I think as we rarely see the longer original version as it costs more air time
They have also brought out NY ones

We've now got channels where you pay extra to exclude adverts (I refuse to do this but would consider to avoid ant&dec!) but how about this for a "pie-in-the-sky" idea for something similar?

When you get an advert such as jane plan, "would you like to" - no, fuck off, and they do! Simlarly, "would you like to take part in this quiz, you have sixty seconds to find" - no, fuck off, and they do! Would probably need to get Alexa buy-in for this but she's not too keen on bad language.

Only an idea!

It is criminal that ANY ads promoting betting are allowed.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists believes heavy gamblers tend to suffer from low self-esteem, stress, drugs and drink. become more anxious, have poor sleep and appetite, develop a substance misuse problem and get depressed.

The only doubt I have is that my experience with psychiatrists for someone I was married to suggests they are a bunch of cowboys.
