As a follow-up to that, I would suggest guys in those situations offer to buy a ticket for her ie by Trainline and then email her the barcode. I think you may be able to claim some money back if the ticket isn't used but others could advise.
Off peak, super off peak and anytime tickets
can be refunded if they're not used, but the last time I did this they charged a tenner for the privilege.
Advanced single tickets
cannot be refunded, but you can pay a fee to use them on an alternate journey - assuming that's a useful trip for you. Not sure what the fee is, but I'd assume they'd rip you off to a similar degree for a refund.
