Author Topic: Windows 10 problems?  (Read 975 times)

Offline dieseldriver

Reading some of windows 10 problems shortly after it replaced windows 7, has these problems been sorted? Like trying to install Google Chrome as default browser and Edge wouldn't let you? Looking to buy a new notebook to take with me when away from desktop so still can have internet access. Travel a lot so a notebook is ideal using hotels.
Notebook I'm using now is a Samsung x120. Bought it 2008 and various problems occuring causing it to malfunction. Probabely not worth the money getting it repaired. That's if it can be repaired?

Apparently ChromeOS has been doing big numbers this past year thanks to schools being shut.

You could get a Chromebook if you must have another device with it's own storage and processing.

You could buy a portable screen and keyboard & mouse to go with your phone if it's a smart one and you're going to be using it's data connection anyway.

Windows 10 is more than sound enough so many years after release.  Currently use Chrome and Firefox as default browsers although certain MS-related links like help references from within Windows insist on opening IE/Edge.  Hasn't bothered me enough that I've gone searching the Web and Registry to change that.

Use it at work and have set Chrome as browser no problem. Both laptop and PC.

It wants to open PDF’s in edge all the time but I’m sure I could change it if I wanted.

The problem is that any IT equipment from 2008, is really designed for software of the time. Software from 2021 will struggle.  I updated a laptop from 2015 from Windows 7 to Window 10.  It really struggles especially when booting up.  Lack of processing power is the issue with it.

Really?

I upgraded an old Core2duo e8400 PC from Vista to Win 7 and then Win10 with no performance issues, it actually got better going from 7 to 10, the occasional exception error because of a memory addressing issue with a specific game.

Windows 10 has been the most ideal/stable I've experienced since the Windows XP era.
It's constantly updated, and everything runs smoothly, especially if you're buying newer hardware.

Right click a PDF and select properties.  On the box that pops up select change next to open with, then select the app you want

I'd check first that any programs you use are compatible with Chrome before doing that,I quite fancied a touch screen Chromebook to use in a room.
Bought it and it wasn't compatible with the only program I wanted to run on it,nice laptop though.
As I was reliant on computers when I worked I'd say the hardware is most important aspect.
I've no problems with Windows10 but I use Firefox and I only update when I want to,why do you want to use Chrome?
It's definately not worth repairing a laptop or notebook you can buy some great refurb laptops/books for next to nothing.

Chrome is fine on Windows 10, it”s fast and lean. I found firefox cludgy and slow to open.
You’re right, buy a refurb laptop, or even a new one.  They’re cheap.

Agree, if OP's phone isn't up to the task horsepower-wise then £200 should easily get a larger format device that will support browsing over WiFi, it is his non-browsing requirements that will drive his hardware needs.
Refurbs can be chancey, especially if the battery hasn't been replaced and covered by at least 12 months warranty, unless you don't care about battery life.
Older refurbs can also have failing screens, so what do you really want for your money.

A tad hyperbolic

If Linux is one one of your lesser options what other OSes would you recommend as better for inherent utility and compatibility with easily available 3rd party software for a non-techie?
