Author Topic: Got myself a punting phone for 99p  (Read 5277 times)

Hi all,

Just thought you'd like to know that Carphone Warehouse are doing Nokia 105 basic PAYG phones for 99p (plus £20 credit) so you shell out £21. The services are Virgin and O2. It is a basic job, doesn't have a camera, or do anything fancy like access to the internet.

The colours are black and blue. Don't read anything into that for a punting phone guys :D

The battery life is claimed to be 12 hours of phone calls. Obviously its too soon to tell as I only just got it but it seems to be performing well.  It has a torch which is accessed by pressing the up scroll key twice. However for safety reasons I have to advise against using it to illuminate a WG's back passage.....as the light is pretty feeble and you'd do yourself a mischief.

LOL, fantastic advice for some of the brave souls on here who punt on their everyday phone despite being in a relationship. :)

Propper fucking old school. My old punting has no fancy shit either - it's the size of candy bar and the battery lasts all fucking week. I have to charge my iPhone every night

If you provided any details to CW / paid by credit card then best to bin the SIM card & buy another.  For cash.  And then do cash top-ups.  Are you still feeling quite so happy ?  :scare:

paid by cash.
that is the right answer.  Hope you gave them some bollocks info on yourself.  When i got a PMob then i was asked for details.  To which my answer was i don't want to receive loads of marketing crap.  Yeah right.  Finished up with 'do you want to sell me the phone or shall i buy it down the road ?'.  Did the trick :)

What a wonderful way to deal with pushy salesmen, webpunter.  I'll remember and use that line!

I have a Nokia 100 which is great, Primitive but did the job and battery life is about 2 weeks between charges. £10 from Asda but they then bashed them out for £5.

I went off for a punt once (and was likely running late) and it wouldn't unlock so I went and got a Nokia 106 (£16) - then the original unlocked when I got to my car. Anyway 106 - bad phone. It has a colour screen, basic camera and you can add a microSD which is nice to store pics of various girls spesh for a plan B. The BIG problem with it is the keypad lock. I can set them to lock after 1 minute inactivity and the 100 works perfect. The 106 doesn't auto lock in a few of the screens. I'm single so not a massive problem there but I like the peace of mind that nobody could just pick my phone up and find it unlocked, lots of girls numbers, pics, texts on it.

Good move OP.

99p, really is a no brainer. My punting phone is an old Nokia, does calls and texts and sod all else, I wouldn't let anything prossie related anywhere near my iPhone.

how is it 99p when you had to spend £20.99.  Not such a great deal imo unless you spend £20 a month ringing prossies?

Also don't you have to top up X amount on a regular basis or they delete the number anyway.

The £20 would last at least 6 months I would think. I still wouldn't spend it all, but you could use some of the credit up on normal calls to people you don't know obviously & then just top up a fiver when needed.

An unlocked basic phone costs about 10 quid online. Basic, lightweight, and can't remember what your dog had for dinner.

To recap: the phone cost 99p and seems perfectly adequate for punting and as a backup phone for emergencies (I need a mobe for work, so I am now covered if something happens to the main one). It's pay as you go, so the £20 of credit stays on it until its used up. I don't have to top it up or anything unless I need to. I think that's excellent value for 99p so I posted to share it with UKP members in case this information is of use to you.

99p for the phone and 20 quid PAYG credit, sounds perfect to me. I reckon you could to the same total at Tesco (10 quid for the phone and same again for credit) but it really doesn't matter.

Key point is it's easy a cheap to get a punting phone - weigh it up against the consequences of a prossie calling your main phone at a bad time. Pay cash and Bobs' your uncle.

Exactly, for punters with a OH whether it's 99p or £50 it's a lot better than being in that situation  :hi:

Whether you're in a relationship or not, having a punting phone is key. It's not just about being outted if you're in a relationship but about the safety as well. If you walk from an escort or issues happen during your punt, all you have to do is throw the sim card away and your life is fine. Always use a different punting name and never use your day to day phone and it's night on impossible for any issues to occur once you've left the escort.

I once used my main phone to book a girl as she was on the same network and I got free minutes. Half way through the punt she complains that the condom broke (I wasn't convinced), she wasn't on the pill etc - great cue for me to leg it. Anyway there was always the worry was going to get a phone call 9 months later  :scare:

Punting is a different life, a different world, and if you want to keep it that way you get a  punting phone and if there's any risk of it spilling over you toss the sim and get a new one, max £10 topup lost to keep your life in order.

In my opinion it's worth paying a bit extra to get a 3G phone (e.g second hand off eBay where I expect you will find them for under £20). The point is that I want my punting phone on the Three network as this way when I top up with a £10 it will last for ages (since calls are only 3p per minute and texts 2p each). Compare this to Vodafone where a £10 top up would only last me 2 punts (I phone / text a lot of girls last minute to see who's free) since Vodafone charge exactly ten times as much per minute for calls and seven times as much for texts.

So consider your network.  Use this to help you decide:

I got mine from Tesco a couple of months ago, it's a Samsung, not sure what model but really basic.  Cost £2.50 plus ten pound for the top up,£12.50 all in, with T-Mobile.

That's exactly what I did. Got a 3 PAYG SIM and a basic cheap Android £30 new) for it to go in. Set-up a new Gmail account and a couple of apps to erase the phone if required. Bonus is that I can use the phone for SatNav, at 1p per Meg of data, a text is 2p and the top-up exists until credit expires. Also has Wi-Fi so can connect at McD's for emails/Adultwork etc. Stick a lock-code on it and if it's ever discovered / stolen, etc, you can remotely wipe it.

Of course this doesn't offer total anonymity as you still need to buy the SIM and register a card to top it up. Not too sure if there is a way of total anon Sim purchase and top-up? Anyone any ideas?

Offline Stav096

Yes; most shops; CW,O2, Voda etc, offer a pay cash over the counter top-up credit - they just need you mobile number.

Most offer a plan were either you just top-up by about £10 a month for the free texts, or whenever needed, but without the free texts. The latter is now limited, I think, in that the phone is dissed if there is no top-up after x months - it varies by provider.

You're right. These quick comparison sheets can potentially save hours and lots of frustration/pennies.

I've got several different unlocked phones on top of a landline and can't say I'm thrilled with any of them. Good phones are a slight liability and generally need a microsim that'snot swappable with a standard cheap-phone sim. I use usb chargers as none of them accept the same charging lead, even same-brand. The wifi and mobile reception on all of them varies - and due to the quality of the antenna, not just the network. There are still places in Scotland where you are totally fucked, whatever network. For travelling abroad, the sims are not only inconsistent (what's cheap in one country is crap in another) so I end up buying local sims, especially for calling within a country. The rates of most companies seem deliberately complex so there's as much chance of getting thebest deal as going to trainline.com. The table is 2013, but companies change their rate plans so often it's still only a rough guide. Virgin have just sent me a deal-to-beat all deals, which, like most such deals, will probably turn out to be utter shite if I search for the small print with a microscope, and Virgin don't strike me as the cheapest even if they claim to be half the price of anyone else.

I'm not a skinflint. Calls to prossies don't break the bank, and punting carefully can avoid being taken for a mug. I wish I could say the same about phone companies.

Phone companies today are the equivalent of double-glazing in the 60's: either live with the fact you will be ripped off or live with some carrier-pigeons.

I would have always thought punting phone MORE dangerous unless you have a cast iron reason to have a second cheaper phone she's never seen before and can't see now.

Do McD's allow access to AW on their free Wi-Fi?

As I  use an old Nokia as a punting phone (no internet access), I could not take one for the team, even though it was an easy one.

But as has been posted countless times on here another punting Sim is all thats needed which are obviously tiny, no need for another phone if thats going to be a problem.

Some time ago there were phones that would support two sims each with different numbers , I tested one from Voda but it never worked
I would be interested to see if those do work

Bad idea. I'm sure it's slapped all over Mumsnet that if your OH has a dual sim phone there's a reason. Also it's the same risk really, forgetting to switch back, texts etc.

If it really came down to it I'd stick a sim under te carpet in the car or something and at 10-15 a go buy a phone every time you need a punt if you got to and there's nowhere you can keep it safe. I mean really stick it in a poly bag and drop it in some nettles each time and if its not there then buy 1 but don't ever leave a trail.
