Hi all.

Anyone on here into home brewing.

I used to do it 15 years ago as a 25 year old binge drinker. Was thinking of getting back into it.

I used to brew larger and cider back then. But since got into drinking Real Ales fir the past 7/8 years.

Although ive been T Total all throughout lockdown im thinking of betting some stuff ordered for when i fsncy brrwing again.

Any recommendations for decent IPAs or Porters would be appreciated

Never done home brew myself and wouldn't have a clue but as I understand it the internet is full of fellow brewers and recipes that will copy / mimic your favourite beer.
I do know someone who does brew and it's a great retirement hobby for them to the point they have won awards in local competitions for some of the beers they have conjured up  :drinks:

Good start would be to join CAMRA as they have 1000's of fellow real ale fans some of whom just drink the stuff but also many who are happy to share good information and helpful advice (just like on here for punting)  :drinks:

I am a CAMRA member, but just for the discount card. Will look into it a bit more when I'm ready to brew

Didn't think anyone still did this.

Despite being an avid beer lover for most of my life (barely at all now - give me gin or wine instead) I never remotely had the inclination. Seemed to be a lot of faffing about for something that often didn't taste good.
To be fair I have had little experience of it.
I remember when I was a kid my dad made some just the once. My mother complained about the smell and the old man never bothered again. It wasn't only the old lady's whinging I don't think he could be arsed. Can't remember what it tasted like, but I am sure the old man would have let me taste it as he did let me drink limited amounts even when I was well under age.

The only other couple of experiences I had were with a mate's home brew once, and again with the father of another mate who offered me his home brew. My mate's mother whispered 'don't drink it, Martin (my mate who loved his beer) won't!' Can't remember whether I did or not.

I believe some of the home brew could be very potent however!

Spirits is harder than beer to brew.

Back in 80s when i was a kid, my dad used make rice wine (saki) in demi johns.

Strong as hell it is.

You can only give it a whirl

Wine and beer is one thing but I always thought spirit was illegal, probably down to not paying tax / duty etc on something over a certain % of alcohol content  :unknown:

Years ago my parents used to do home wine. I still have all glass equipment, somewhere in the loft. I remember it was noisy during fermentation, it was making funny bubble noises.

Not sure on the laws but doubt dibble will be raiding a home brewer for self consumption

My brewing hobby started with making beer from tinned kits but I've not made beer for years. Wine is much easier to make. You only need fruit, yeast, sugar & maybe a couple of other ingredients/powders. Home brewed wine is generally drinkable but a splash of lemonade takes the edge off it if it isn't great  :drinks: Recipes and advice is easily found on the web.

Used to do home brew beer and wine back in the 1980's from kits.
The reason you cannot home brew spirits is the fact that they have to be distilled and that is illegal without the correct license. All brews reach a maximum of about 14% ( wine strength) before the alcohol content kills off the yeast. Any stronger requires a still, copper tubing and knowledge from the mountain men, see External Link/Members Only, play it loud, Steve Earle at his best.
