You don't need to know Ukrainian/Russian to get by if you are well prepared, however the Tesco principle applies here. In UA 1 hour is standard, there is no quickie/15mins service.

Recommended Prerequisites:Going for an indie punt in Kyiv is

- Plenty of UAH Cash
- ...and if you're getting outcalls to the hotel, balls of fucking brass!
It would also be helpful to recruit a local to help negotiate the language, I managed to get hold of a local guide, as well as a remote contact on Telegram that helped me translate and write to various indies, as well as placing a few calls.
Getting into Kiev and released from QuarantineAfter passport control, directly to your right there is a COVID PCR Testing station, you'll pay 1650UAH for the test and get the results after about 6 hours, although it can take longer. They will register your UK number, but once you get a UA SIM
you need to get this changed asap, this is important. Make sure you keep notes of your test number and the contact details for the testing company, I took pictures and stored them on my phone.
In the arrivals area you can find a kiosk selling UA SIMs as well as assorted Travelex style cash machines opposite. At this point you'll have no choice but to use them. You can buy a SIM with cash and the sales people will install it and configure it for you. One thing you need to be aware of though is that my SIM's SMS function never worked, I could neither send nor receive SMS for the duration of my visit 🤬 So ensure that this is working before you leave.
Once you get the SIM working, and withdrawn as much cash as you need to for the isolation period, get yourself to the hotel and complete the Dii Vdoma registration. When Dii Vdoma is complete,
immediately call the lab and get the registered phone number changed from your UK to the UA SIM. Personally I waited too long to do this and I ended up having to self isolate 1 extra day 😒
When your negative test is confirmed by Dii Vdoma, you'll be released from self isolation, it can take up to 48h for this, mine took 36h and I'm sure this was because I changed the UA number after test results were already published 😤
If any of this process halts or encounters a problem, you will need help from someone local/Ukrainian speaker to help you escalate a solution. My suggestion if you have no one that can help, is that you ask the Hotel reception to intervene. I had my own contacts that helped me with this, as I neither got a confirmation email from the lab, not my test results as a PDF, after intervention, my contact got the results for me and I was able to have a discussion with the authorities to get released from Dii Vdoma, I used Telegram for this.
How does Dii Vdoma work and can you get around it?It is a smartphone app that monitors your position, and ensures that you self isolate. At various random intervals it did request that you take an instructed selfie and send to the authorities. You have to turn your head and make different gestures to ensure that it is actually you there and not a print out of your face.
I didn't get one of these requests before 10am, and I didn't get one after 9pm either. So I guess if you have more than one phone, you could sneak out later at night time, but that risk is on you.
When I had the negative test documented, however was still not released by Dii Vdoma, my local contact told me to just fuck it off and go out, then if questioned I should just flash the negative test. My contact said that everyone bends the rules there so just go for it. I did not do this as I am a very cautious person, but again, if you want to do this, I hear that locals do this all the time.
The workflow for Dii Vdoma is:
- Install Dii Vdoma App
- Take the PCR test at airport terminal
- Buy a UA SIM Card
- Get to the Hotel
- Activate Dii Vdoma
- Obtain Negative PCR Test
- Lab sends result automatically to Dii Vdoma
- You are released from Self Isolation

By this time I had been released from Dii Vdoma and was able to explore Kyiv. However I was still nervous of attending incalls. My primary concern being that in places I am familiar with, if I get an address, I know if it is a good or bad area, likelihood of getting robbed etc. In unfamiliar places I have no fucking clue and it is not a risk I was willing to take at this point. Not had any luck booking indies that day, so I contacted some Salons via Telegram. All you need to do is write "Hello" and they will send pics of who is working as well as the pricing and address. They all have pretty standard pricing which is 1000UAH for an hour with around 300UAH extra for outcall, so starting at £35.
