No doubt for many of todays flaky younger generation it's simply a fashion statement or to try and prove they are cool / alternative, others will do it to fit in because "everyone else does it" which ultimately means it isn't alternative anymore 

Piercings of all manner are just really following the same trajectory as tattoos have

I think there is little doubt that having piercings like this is a fashion statement with a sexual edge to it.

However, a gorgeous black stipper I knew had an inverted nipple on one boob. It would come out to play with some sucking but would then pop back in again. I joked that a piercing might keep it out. Next time I saw her she had a piercing with a bar, which was keeping the nipple on show.

A case of a piercing for sort of cosmetic reasons, but sexy too!

A pierced nipple is about as edgy or exciting as a pierced ear. Piercings are very mainstream and available in virtually any high street - they are not indicators of heightened sensuality or a racy nature.

Being an old fashioned old bastard I have long hated piercings and tattoos.
However, ironically the only two I remember who had pierced nipples were two of the best prossies I ever saw, namely Louise of Arabesque parlour Bury - the only parlour girl in my top twenty, and Elin of Minx Escorts. A girl I worked with had that issue and solution and just dropped it into conversation one day, she went as far as pulling her t-shirt tight across her chest to show it off.
My first experience of one was just after Gail Porter had posed for the lads mags and showed off her pierced nipple. Pierced nipples are OK, but it’s got to be both – not just one – otherwise it looks a bit unbalanced to me. But the real turn-on is women who wear rings in them rather than just bars.
